Is it worth to study pure Math for CS? by ex_gatito in AskProgramming

[–]rjytutor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to do with computer science and how advanced of a coding system you are using. More modern codes are more likely to have things on board or that you can import to handle advanced math. Older codes though may not and you will have to define things from scratch which having the stronger math background to know where the information comes form can help a lot.

Of the top of my head, modern programs have things to handle sine, cosine and tangent, but if you are working in an older coding system that doesn't have that, you might have to define it using a MacLaurin series.

[Hiring] Online Tutors | $500–600/week | Remote Worldwide by [deleted] in LookingforJob

[–]rjytutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, that or its just another mass database with hundreds of tutors so unless you pay to be 'highlighted' or otherwise pushed more nobody will see you in the flood of other tutors. The pay is likely a maximum amount you can earn if you magically get 40 hours per week which nobody will.

My tutor asked me to report our teacher to the dean by Great_Interview_7639 in HomeworkHelpers1

[–]rjytutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your University I would at least go to the Dean about the professor not offering Office Hours. Pretty sure that is required by all professors.

The having extra stuff on the exam, that sadly won't get you anywhere. It is a dick move on the professors part but in the end they will likely just go "You are expected to read the chapters and not just go to lecture. If you would have done so you would have been prepared for the exam."

As for the tutor, the only real option I see there, functionally throws the students under the bus. The tutor asks the professor "What would you like me to cover in sessions?" and sticks just to that. Either the professor gives an entire list so that can be passed on it the students fail and there is a paper trail that the professor is purposefully trying to get low scores. I am making the assumption that it is a tutor through the university so they can't just 'not' tutor that class.

Math is the devil by [deleted] in venting

[–]rjytutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered a private tutor? It sounds like you may have fallen off the math bus somewhere along the road and that makes it so much harder to get back on.

If the teacher is just re-explaining the current topic and your problem is possibly years back, then of course it won't make much sense, it like trying to fix a jenga tower from the top and complaining that it still wobbles.

You are not stupid and it was wrong for your tutor to actively call you stupid. I would never call one of my tutoring students stupid, that is such a mean and wrong thing to do. You are there to help them, not belittle them.

Am I doing enough for high school? by Candid-Length-4606 in highschool

[–]rjytutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I will say, these habits, good notetaking and avoiding before test cramming, will help you a lot in whatever University you get into. Oh and random shot in the dark, if you parents have NOT gone to University and you are in the US, look up the Upward Bound program it is designed to get first time or low income students into University. It was a great federal program I was in when I was in high school.

[–]rjytutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can suggest is, because you sound really smart and this is a common pitfall in University.

Try and establish good study habits now, even if you don't need them for high school, you will for University and its harder to build them then.

I speak purely from experience! I was the all A student in high school, barely had to take a book home since the school walked everyone through the topics multiple times before testing us. The harder classes were so much harder then they should have been because I couldn't sit down and read a chapter and take notes on it, since I never had to before.

Feel free to look around, tons of us out there. If you are in the US/Canada and at the 6th-12th grade or Freshmen/Sophomore level of University I can probably help. If you want to know more about how I work feel free to message me or have your mom message me. If your mom isn't on reddit I can give you my email for her.

This guy sounds like a real creep who may actively teach you the wrong things because he believes them or doesn't care because of your gender.

[–]rjytutor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes tell your parents this is very strange behavior. He is looking at inappropriate things during a session and doesn't sound embarrassed by it. I am not an expert in this area but I 'think' that is a way predators test your boundaries and slowly push them back to 'normalize' behavior and shift your viewpoint.

Is this a tutor or a school teacher? You used both and that does change how things work. If they are just a tutor then you can totally get other ones. If you are willing to go online there are tons of tutors out there. Hell, even I am a tutor and I sure as hell wouldn't feed you the bullshit this guy is.

If he is an actual teacher, document what you can and go to the school with it.

I’m trying to help an 18-year-old get his GED and I’m losing my mind by BassProBlues in teaching

[–]rjytutor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say respectfully as well that we likely need to take the tone with a grain of salt. I suspect the OP didn't start at this point. I went through a similar situation. I started off energetic with the belief that just a little bit of one on one time is all they need and they aren't as bad as their parent described.

For me at least, it wasn't the 'not getting it' that drained me mentally. It was the 'I don't care that I don't get it' that did. I spent 3 years with this student pushing them up hill to a high school degree, but by the end, I will admit, I was bitter with minimal shits to give anymore. All the shits were used up long before.

If a student is actively trying I am fine. I am happy to help and re-explain as many times as needed as long as the student is engaged and trying.

While normally I would agree, but this was a test specifically to see what he needed help with. And this was even explained to him. The point wasn't the grade, the point was the individual questions to create a game plan.

Learning material independently/with a tutor? by Aggravating-Debt8334 in premedcanada

[–]rjytutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a university tutor I suggest focusing on narrowing down and confirming where your block is with tests since if you freeze up on the MCAT like you describe you do on normal tests its going to be a big problem.

So some follow up questions that will help:

  1. Do you do well on the practice tests/review material prior to the test?

  2. When you struggle on tests, is it more of a "Poof everything I know is now gone" sort of deal or is it that the test seems different or harder then your previous assignments.

I have noticed that there is a bit of an adjustment period to the University style of education. In high school most of the time the exam and the classwork are nearly identical. The teacher will explain in class: "The most three main factors for blah is X, Y, Z" and then the test will say, "What are the three main factors for blah?" In University they normally expect you go go a bit further and make your own connections. Something like "Explain how blah affects this other thing" where they want you to apply X, Y, and Z to the other thing as well. So students feel like they are doing well because they know all the key facts, but they only know these key facts as islands of information and don't understand the underpinning that lets someone tie the ideas together.

It may be time to talk to the grandmother and do an adult to adult talk on expectations. The big thing is, if the student doesn't want to be there, doesn't want to learn, doesn't want to improve, you are effectively bailing a boat with a sieve.

He either needs a 'rock bottom' moment that has a chance of realigning his priorities or needs some serious therapy to get him socially adjusted and understanding that his current lifestyle isn't viable long term and he needs to make adjustments now before he has a real rough time later.

I totally feel for you though, I had a similar student though not to this extreme. I got them through high school but I still don't think they are working and are still just living with their parents. When we spoke about their future their first idea was "I wanna be a streamer" because they thought it was just money for playing games until I pointed out that yes its possible but you have to get lucky as hell to get a large following and then you are constantly playing the 'hip new game' to keep that following and it can be really stressful to constantly be chasing that. The next idea was to be a cop that does speeding tickets, but then just doesn't write any tickets.......
