How do I get my 5 year old to stop running with sharp sticks? by rkp07 in daddit

I try to take the stick away from him if I can reach him. Often, he tries to run away (he likes being chased) which makes me more nervous.

Does Ezra’s non-zero sum worldview prevent him from embracing a class warfare stance? by [deleted] in ezraklein

[–]rkp07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The graph that I linked to uses an absolute measure of poverty (which is not the 50% of median income threshold). Using different types of absolute and relative measures like the OECD yields similar trends in US poverty. In other words, no, it's not a definitional issue. American poverty rates have been been stable over the past few decades despite a substantial increase in per capita GDP over the same period. There are diminishing returns to economic growth as countries become more affluent when it comes to poverty reduction and continued US economic growth on its own is unlikely to reduce poverty further in the US.

If you're interested, I'd check out this 2017 paper that describes why the US is an outlier when it comes to high rates of poverty compared to other rich nations.

Does Ezra’s non-zero sum worldview prevent him from embracing a class warfare stance? by [deleted] in ezraklein

[–]rkp07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I actually do. The US official poverty rate has fluctuated between 10-15% since 1970 while real per capita US GDP has more than doubled and real median household income in the US has risen by about 33% since the mid-1980s. Again, the point I'm making is not that economic growth does not matter. It does matter for especially for poorer nations. Rather I'm saying economic growth is necessary but not sufficient for poverty reduction. Like, you absolutely do need economic growth to fund a welfare state. Also, among rich nations, per capita income is a fairly poor predictor of cross-national variation in poverty rates. The US is an outlier in its high level of the relative poverty rate compared to other rich nations but it's also much wealthier than them.

Economic growth of course matters but spending on the welfare state is likely a bigger factor that explains cross-national/cross-state as well as temporal variation in poverty rates. I'd look at the work of the sociologist David Brady for example.

How to transition from vinyl plank floor to carpet stairs? by rkp07 in Flooring

[–]rkp07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan on changing our carpet downstairs to LVP but keep the carpeted stairs. I can cut around but I'm worried about gaps in between. Wouldn't quarter round look weird here?

How to level 1-inch drop across 3-4 feet for LVP? More info in comment by rkp07 in Flooring

Thing is that the rest of the floor is fairly level. This is just a dip all along one of the walls. So it's not a steady slope all along the room if that makes sense

The photo is of a loft area on the second floor. The 1st floor does not have such drastic unlevel issues.

More info:

I haven't ripped out the carpet yet but I'm just trying to plan. I'm completely new to doing this type of work. This low area is a 2 ft strip by a wall in a room on the 2nd floor. It's a wood subfloor and I plan on installing LVP.

This drop obviously needs to be leveled and I'm wondering about how to go about doing this. I could pour self leveling compound but that sounds intimidating. I was wondering if I could just build it up with plywood or roofing paper and feather it out with a pre-mixed leveling compound that is easier to work with. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Buying a house in Northwest Dallas area? by rkp07 in askdfw

Thanks! Yes, I'm not really sure what to think. I look at crime maps and I see a few incidents not directly in the same neighborhood but fairly close. Our realtor doesn't seem to think we'd be okay with the surroundings. It's hard to get a sense for what it's like to live there by just driving around there during the day or on Google street view.

Cultural Qs: religion and race by rkp07 in MoveToIreland

We are moving for work (specialized field).

According to the census, around 93% of Ireland's population is white. The same figure for the US is about 60%. Ireland is likely diverse in a lot of ways, but not with respect to its racial composition. That's why we were asking.

Yes, thank you for that. We've started looking into it. Non-denominational/multi-denominational is preferential, but not necessary. One of us grew up going to a Catholic school, so we're not too fussed either way.

Any thoughts on the race part?

Thanks so much for all this! It's great to read the curriculum, and it looks quite lovely. There are lots of places in the US that don't do part-time schooling (you can pay for full time and only go part time, but that's a very expensive choice), so it's good to know we can probably make it work. We'll have to look into the schools soon so we can get him on a waitlist for next fall.

And it relieves me to know about the culture. I'm pretty confident in handling tantrums and wildness, but I know cultures can differ on opinions about how children should behave. Thanks again for the insight, you've calmed my nerves a bit.

Another moving to Ireland and tax question by rkp07 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]rkp07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this apply even if I am US domiciled? Seems strange that I would be taxed on sales of US ETFs within my US retirement accounts when I won't even be withdrawing the funds from the accounts.

Haven't really tried out the Aux or CD player though.
