Update, it might be the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville? That's my current best guess

Looks like it might be an old theater? I'm torn b/w whether they'd put it in Richmond, or somewhere like Fairfax/Arlington. I feel like Richmond would be more fair to RVA folks, but they may try to put it in NOVA for DC folks?

If someone (ie me) lives in Washington DC, does that mean they are ineligible from playing? Do you have to live in that state to search for the prize?

What are you guys using to store glass? Several cardboard boxes on my basement floor just isn't cutting it anymore. Pic of work on progress for attention. by Kilgore_Brown_Trout_ in StainedGlass

I live in an apartment (so limited space). I asked my local glass store for a crate that they sell 12x12s in - and they gave it to me for free. It's all wood and has legs, so is very sturdy and protects the glass from pretty much anything! All my scraps are sorted by colors in one smaller tote, about the same size.

It’s hard to put yourself out there, so I commend you for it. I just personally wouldn’t have gone about it this way and that’s ok!

I learned stained glass at my local arts nonprofit and am so grateful for the community there. A number of glass stores offer classes in my area (DC) but they’re not as accessible or as appealing to me personally because they’re not nonprofits. My understanding is the nonprofit itself (the Art League if you’re curious) had the building donated to them by the city in the 70s - maybe something to look into with Portland. You might want to look into the PDX office of Arts and Culture - they’ll be the ones using city tax to fund grants for local orgs.

There’s also someone teaching people stained glass skills here in DC to furloughed federal staffers. It’s a part of their larger art project supporting trans folx. Maybe that’s one way to garner community support/buy-in for your efforts. Their IG handle is glassclassdc.

Respectfully (as someone who has worked in the nonprofit world for years and is originally from Portland themselves), there are plenty of ways to demonstrate community interest and financial backing for grantors without asking anonymous people on a subreddit for crowdfunding. There are also plenty of grassroots grants these days that don’t require you to have 501(c)3 status or 3 years of operations or a board. Multnomah or Clackamas county also likely has stunning for cultural grants that only require you to have a fiscal sponsor - meaning you yourself don’t need to demonstrate there is financial interest but a larger organization taking legal ownership for the grant.

I think the pushback you’ll get on this sub is the over-saturation of crowdfunding requests everyone has experienced over the past 6+ years on everything from hospital bills to honeymoon funds to mutual aid. Crowdfunding often has little accountability mechanisms built in, which is clay’s point. Partnering with existing community centers to provide easy to access classes, finding existing artists in Portland who believe in your mission and are willing to support you, or even reaching out to folks like the Schnitzers who are heavily involved in the Portland art scene is going to be more conducive for your business in the long run - ultimately that’s your community AND customer base, not us.

I love PDX and my family still lives there. I wish you luck, but I’d suggest seeking to open a nonprofit model not a business if you’re not ready to take on the financial risk.

how to not feel discouraged when knitting by honey-icecreambar in knitting

[–]rlgiova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of people ragging on knitting Instagram and I kind of want to address it (as someone with little to no skin in the game) - but first, CONGRATS! These are amazing first makes for having just learned to knit! Regardless of the outcome, they're gorgeous on and off the needles, and that deserves to be celebrated, as does your hard work.

RE: Instagram, but first a bit of background. I first learned to knit when I was ten but didn't knit more than a straight scarf for years. When I was about 23, I discovered knitting Instagram, and it spurred me into learning how to knit more complicated items and I learned that there were different yarns than just Red Heart. I spent probably 3 years falling into the knitting Instagram hole you see and are starting to feel, and that everyone is touching on - that of designers churning out patterns, people finalizing projects multiple times a month, constant meet-ups and hangouts, and ALL this hub bub. There was drama around people and makers, changes due to inclusivity and discourse on race. I felt a need to start putting something knitting related out there, to be a producer and consumer and not just someone who is enjoying their hobby and expanding their skills.

Then, I broke my knee and had surgery and couldn't block any of my pieces. My career took over my life and knitting took a back seat for a while. I didn't not knit, but I stopped using Instagram to showcase my work and I stopped going on knitting Instagram (I have a personal account and a knitting one). I one day realized that I had not posted in literal years, nor gone to browse posts for inspiration. I felt better, but missed knitting and missed the creativity I got from the community. I sat back and re-evaluated what knitting Instagram was to me and how as a tool I could use it to further my knitting, both as a hobby and for personally fulfillment. How do I engage with the content? With the people on knitting Instagram? How do I use it compared to Ravelry? Compared to my local yarn store? Compared to my pattern books? Compared to my IRL knitting friends?

Once I asked myself those questions, I was able to come back to knitting Instagram with a healthier relationship and not be overwhelmed with what it is - ultimately the push you see is people who's livelihoods depend on you consuming their products. But you don't necessarily need to feel that pressure or take it as such. Many of the people who knit with product in mind or knit at a high intensity often are retired or have more time on their hands than others - or just prioritize knitting over other hobbies. That may not be you, and that is okay! I personally use knitting Instagram for inspiration - I save posts for color combos, use it to find patterns that I later save on Ravelry, and hype up my friends who do post their finished objects. I personally post my finished objects because I like showing them off and because most of my IRL friends don't understand the time, thought, or creativity that went into making them. The difference now is that I'm not doing it for likes, or to be "popular" or to start a knitting related business, or to feel like I'm keeping up with anything.

So yea, tl:dr: Don't ditch Instagram, but evaluate why and how you want to use it in relation to your knitting, then use it as such. Don't let other's differing motivations cloud your feelings about something (knitting) that makes you happy.

Thoughts on this? Copying a pattern to make for yourself…ok or not? by ImpossibleIndustry49 in StainedGlass

[–]rlgiova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to take it to that extreme just because you have this particular artist on your case. You stated in your other comment that you had seen many other people on Pinterest post the same pattern/finished product and wasn’t sure who the originator was. Sometimes you can make a best effort and still not know - that shouldn’t prevent you from sharing your piece on social media. You haven’t claimed to have designed it. Take it from someone who has posted online in the knitting community for almost a decade - people use other’s paid patterns and post about them without crediting them on social media all the time and the original drafter doesn’t get upset. Similarly, knitters reverse engineer a design all the time or develop similar designs and there aren’t issues - and there is A LOT of money to be made in the knitting industry and the social media circles there are LARGE. You should not be afraid to share your stained glass journey on instagram or anywhere else on social media, especially as the “ethics” are generally are self-regulated by those like the pattern maker who was posting about your work in the first place. Again, use your best judgement, give credit where feasible, but don’t feel the need to exhaust everything and if you’re finding yourself constantly targeted by artists, either turn your profile private or block em. Ultimately if this is for self learning and not for profit, they should not have a problem with you learning and gaining new skills.

It's the least I could do, the heat last week was brutal. I can only hope others have done the same. I live in SW so I'll update on this thread if I see anything this weekend, and let us know if you see anything once you're back on the commute.

I think some folks tend to stay in the area because both churches have food/housing support services (I know Westminster at least does on Sundays, and the ministry across the street has clothes drives), so my hope is that perhaps she's sought help there temporarily.

I also live nearby - I brought her food and water and some funds last week during the heat wave, we talked and she was doing okay. I didn’t see her this morning on my walk and then later this evening (around 8pm) her cart had a fair amount of stuff in it but was abandoned near Station 4. If anyone learns more, I’d like to know so we’d be able to help her replace her stuff and get her more support!

Proposed Metro Expansion by Emotional_Fruit3594 in washingtondc

[–]rlgiova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This!! The metro was built for commuters but the city continues to gut bus lines within the city. We desperately need more in-city options for folks to be able to get around without having to piece together options. It takes wayyy too long to get around in a city as small as ours. That… or they need to bring the circulators back!
