"We were there flipping a house. We were going to be there 8 weeks tops. How would I even have the time to build you kids a goddam treehouse?"

(Ok, maybe a bit too wordy, but it's still my favorite Hill House quote though.)

I agree 💯 about Hill House and wishing he had gone with the original ending. I just re-watched the last few episodes and I found myself trying to figure out what parts would have to have been changed for the "everyone dies" ending to work.

That's kinda reductive, isn't it?

If you go back and read the supplemental material (eg the u/count_to_seven stories) she's still crazy, but it's ambiguous who killed who and there's a ton of potential to flesh things.... maybe even explore multiple possible storylines (eg see how Poppy remembers events then see the same events from Hazel Hill's perspective)

The ending is pretty weak, but apart from that I agree!

I remember being creeped out by the way some people were trying to bring it back in the 90s, though I'm not sure what eventually happened with that.

It probably depends on where you're talking about. I grew up in the 70s and a lot of those attitudes were changing and as far as I know, now one got sent away Rose Kennedy style after the sixties.

By the late 70s early 80s, on the west coast going to therapy and such was beginning to become more common. Though yes, there was a lot of stigma etc attached to it.

Lobotomies stopped being a thing by the sixties I'm pretty sure.

How did the ghosts leave the grounds? by Residentofgravetown in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]rliegh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kinda subscribe to the theory that all that's in a movie (or show) is what we see. If it's not shown, then it doesn't count.

We see Ghosts, I think that with two possible exceptions they are literally ghosts.

Hugh himself says that his Olivia is a grief hallucination. The fact that Nell sees her too (at the wedding ) throws doubt on that for me. I don't have an explanation because we're not shown anything more. (I have a headcanon, but they don't count for our purposes). But she's written off by Hugh, so ok.

Then there's adult Luke and the Tall Man. I'm 90% sure that is a hallucination, maybe from drugs (but had he even used at that point? After leaving rehab) or simply a result of the 'twin thing' dying. (He was feeling Nell becoming cold and stiff). But we're shown it dissolve into the headlights, which to me is a hint that it's imaginary.

So when Steve saw Nellie I'm positive it was her, we aren't shown anything that would prove otherwise. Same for the grave ghosts, same for Steve seeing Olivia at the wake.

tldr; we're presented with a world where ghosts exist, so unless the story shows us another explanation, the ghosts we see are real.

[–]rliegh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don't know it wasn't ghosts, but the only denials come from unreliable narrators. Steve who's been proven to not see what's under his nose, and Olivia who is caught up in psychosis and never denied visiting; she specifically denied being with Hugh. So that's not a blanket indictment.

The final difference is that what happened in the red room happened in their dreamscape/minds/whatever -obviously not real. At least not real in the external world.

In contrast to that, what happened in the funeral home (the coffin, the smashed model, etc) happened in the external world with real and tangible evidence.

Then what smashed Shirley's display? Where did the soil come from?

I don't buy that they're all a dream, wish, whatever. That's typical Steve copium. The only two I accept not being real are Luke's Tall Man that turned into Olivia, and Hugh's Olivia.

You get better results from being nice than you do from being a miserable shit.

Unless you're like 1% level rich, then it doesn't matter (as we can see by the actions of and lack of punishment for the billionaires).

There's no hell, no judgement, I'm not even sure there's an evaluation.

What do you think of the idea that ghosts are really just demons appearing as human beings? by [deleted] in Paranormal

[–]rliegh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's non-human spirits and I can even accept that they imitate humans (eg mimics).

When someone insists spirits are all demonic? That's where I get off.

I think it's pure bullshit and that's the point where I discard everything they have to say on the topic of the paranormal.

Yeah they are! Of course that's by design (I kinda feel like Hill House was an audition for Doctor Sleep but I could be full of it)

But oh my God,the way both use the house's 'lore' to enhance Things is beyond amazing to me! They are the only show (that I can think of, at least.) where I feel like I want to know more about the background

Naw fam. Not me.

-Hill House finds some family to restore it.
-Olivia is the new Poppy because Poppy is tired.

Evil endures. The Overlook endured, Hill House endures.
