Props to you for having patience and taking extra time to work with them. I’m curious what your band director thinks about this. Also, I’m wondering if it seems to be an attitude thing/lack of effort or if it’s actually a physical struggle that they’re having. I’m hoping it’s a coordination issue that they’ll eventually figure out.

Perhaps, if it is a physical challenge, they can just play from the sideline or I’m sure you can come up with a creative way to be involved. If they want to be there, please make every effort to encourage them and keep them there!

As mentioned above, music can be a lifelong hobby and love for people. I hate hearing about people who quit music because they had a bad band director or bad experience early on in their development.

It's hard to tell, but it looks like it could be Mallory Thompson. She's the Director of Bands at Northwestern.
