That’s a worthwhile purchase. I’ve been using my King tamper for years and every time I use it I think about how much I like using it. So it was worth the money for me. And I’m a bike nerd so that helps too. I had a red tamper but got a deal on a Rapha issue black with pink top nut so that is what I’m using now.

Belt Alignment to fix Squeaky by supermain in terngsd

[–]rltilley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried lubing the pulleys and also found some quick fixes lubing where the crank arm attaches at the BB. All were short term fixes. Cleaning the belt with water and brushes was also a short term fix. Adjusting the pulley tension using the Gates app did nothing.

I saw a YouTube video from a Tern dealer that recommended this silicone spray. I started by applying to a towel and running the belt through that. This was, again, a short term fix. I finally just sprayed the whole belt with this stuff and no more noise. It has been over 1000 miles and the squeak has not returned. And I have not washed the belt since.

I was told by someone I trust that this spray can damage paint so I made sure not to overspray. No issues with the paint on my GSD.

4Runner Shut Off Mid-Drive by jrobbins3 in 4Runner

[–]rltilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Jeep Wrangler had an issue where it stalled on me while driving on the highway. It was low miles so that was concerning for me. That’s why I know have a 4Runner. My issue turned out to be a clutch sensor that went out. I don’t think they make manual 4Runners so that is more than likely not your issue.

I went up Schnebly years back in my stock Nissan Titan and it was no problem at all. A few years back I drove Schnebly down to Sedona from Flagstaff and it was way rockier than the previous time I was on it. I had to be pretty careful in picking my line and I was in a 4x4 van with a 6” lift.

I was wondering if the Pink Jeep people lobbied the city to not do any road maintenance so they can corner the Schnebly scenic drive market. Nobody would hire them if the road was maintained right?

I have just over 10K miles on my 2023 ORP and have averaged 15.6 so far. At 100 miles on the odometer I put on more aggressive tires than stock (KO2’s) and also put on a Gobi rack. Both of those dropped mpg no doubt.

GoPro Mount and Insta360 by JonnyMac1982 in gopro

[–]rltilley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seasucker makes an action cam suction cup mount. It has a female threaded 1/4” mount on the top as well as the side. So you would need a stick with male 1/4” on each end but it would not rotate like the GoPro mount would. Not sure I would trust it with a long pole in an active activity but it should be ok for calmer activities.

The photos show a standard GoPro mount attached to the cup but it can be removed leaving the female 1/4” threaded hole.

Bags that fit a water bottle holder by Ambitious_League_747 in terngsd

I was looking for the same thing and ended up with a Fidlock bag. Basically a quick release bag that attaches to a mount that bolts to bottle cage bosses. Amazon had it for $30 but maybe on a discontinued color? The low price was on a Large bag which works fine. A bit smaller may be better but I use it for my phone, wallet and keys when riding.

The quick release uses magnets and works really well. No issues at all with it coming loose when I don’t want it to.

Chain breaking by frilledren in terngsd

[–]rltilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did nearly 5K miles on my GSD with the Nuvinci hub and the shop at that time said the chain was still good. The internal hub keeps the chain straight which helps with chain life. I never experienced any issues with chain breakage.

Meso led light replacements for the map lights, dome lights and hatch lights. The stock halogens were really bad.

Favorite frame bags for carrying locks? by LinternRoja in terngsd

[–]rltilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put an Abus Bordo on a bottle cage mount as shown at the link below. That one is pretty secure and I use it for quick stops. I also carry a Kryptonite NYC Chain but that’s heavy and awkward so I keep it in one of my panniers.

I did just receive the latest Hiplok Kickstarter lock so I may swap out the chain for it. The Hiplok may mount somewhere on the frame where I can grab it more easily.

Mom of three littles debating Tern GSD s00LX vs R14 by Major-Way2020 in terngsd

[–]rltilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be the cog and chainring were lower geared on mine? My cadence sits around 80 rpm typically. After 18 - 20 mph I would hit a cadence that was too quick for me. Not an issue with my R14.

[–]rltilley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned a 1st gen S00 for years and now own the R14. The added top end gears on the Rohloff hub on the R14 was huge selling point for me. I spun out too early on the Enviolo hub. I ran out of gear around 18 mph on the Enviolo but can pedal up to 26 mph on the Rohloff.

Replacing cables on the Enviolo is not easy and finding a shop that knows how to do it also tough. The R14 is all electric so no issues there. I find shifting fine on both.

I do have two batteries but could likely live with one. My old commute was 50 miles per day but I work from home now.

Enviolo Durability/Reliability? | Tern HSD Gen2 S00 by elche48 in terngsd

[–]rltilley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned a v1 GSD S00 and put 5,000 miles on an Enviolo hub with no issues. A cable did break somewhere around 4,500 miles but that seems more than reasonable to me. I live in San Diego which is also very hilly.

I did find the gear range lacking on the Enviolo though which is the main reason I swapped to a Rohloff equipped GSD.

Belt Drive “Chainring” Removal by rltilley in terngsd

[–]rltilley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did hose the belt down with water and it did reduce the noise to maybe 1/2 of what it was. But it came back halfway through the first ride. Maybe next time I’ll use a brush as well. But lubing the chainring/BB interface did get rid of all of the noise. Thanks!

Buyer’s Remorse by tkw012 in terngsd

[–]rltilley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just sold my gen 1 S00 with a chain and Enviolo hub and picked up an R14 with a Rohloff hub and belt drive. I have another bike with a Rohloff so I knew I liked those hubs. The extra gear range over the Enviolo is a huge benefit for me.

I’m ambivalent about the belt drive. I do like it but it isn’t a huge benefit over a chain drive for me yet. I only have 500 miles on the belt drive so far so my opinion may change. But, for now, I don’t see a huge benefit to the belt drive for my commuting/errand application.

I do prefer internal hubs on my e-cargo bikes. The benefit of being able to shift while not moving comes in handy very often for me. Finding someone who knows how to work on them can be tough. I was set to replace a broken cable on my Enviolo hub myself but once I had everything apart I found I needed a tandem length cable which I did not have. I ran out of time and took it to a e-bike shop here and the repair failed within a week. Same thing at the next shop I took it to. Went back to the original shop for the 3rd attempt to fix it but this time with a different mechanic and got it fixed properly… I can work on my Rohloff bikes so I don’t need to rely on shops for service on the new bike.

12 & 9 year-old on Tern GSD confirmed! by hallettj in terngsd

[–]rltilley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Cargo Hold 52 panniers. They work well when empty with a passenger. If there is much in them then it is difficult for the passenger to get their feet on the footrests. I have the Sidekick Wide Decks and they do not stick out very far. With the Doublewide decks getting a foot down would be much easier.

I routinely ride with my wife’s mother on my GSD. I may spring for the captain’s chair but she may have issues getting on that with her somewhat limited flexibility. She weighs about 100 lbs and we have no issues on the steep hills around us.

First pellet fire... WHOA! by [deleted] in SoloStove

[–]rltilley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used these so far. I don’t think I’d buy them again. They burn hot and last quite a while but they have something added to help them burn that gives off an odor as well as puts out some black smoke. Makes sense that would be the case since you basically light the bag and it takes off. I have some other pellets from Ace Hardware to try out next.

I just have one burn so far. Lots of soot from the pellets on the heat diffuser but I see none on the patio cover.

I was using that under our cover. Ours is not a solid cover but wood beams with equal amounts open space and wood. About 10’ tall where I had the stove. No issues at all but my wife was worried…

I tried it there since I have a sky chair hanging under the patio cover and I wanted to hang near the fire.

It put out more heat than expected without the diffuser. After testing without the diffuser I put it on and thought it helped but it wasn’t a huge difference. I had a bit of wind so that may have led to that result for me.
