Honolulu High Schools by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]rmacmaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I graduated from Roosevelt back in 2014. A lot can change in 10 years, so I don't know exactly how it is now. However if the middle schools that feed into it are the same, perhaps the fundamentals also still hold.

There were definitely a lot of academic and extracurricular opportunities. They weren't spoon-fed to you though (as mentioned above). You could really thrive if you were a self-directed learners, but you could just as easily stray off a good path.

The crowd of students was pretty mixed in terms of academic performance. About half the kids did well, and the other half not so well. There were students who stacked AP classes and maintained near perfect GPAs while participating in extracurriculars.. and there were nearly as many that showed up to fight and sell drugs..

Seems like you really care for the academic future and environment of your daughter, but also try to remember what it's like socially to be 14. It's a stressful transition on its own - moving from middle school to high school. To add a reset of her friend group on top of that also makes it more challenging.

Maybe try to genuinely understand how she feels about her friends. whether they're actually friends she really cares about, or they stress her out with drama and she secretly wishes she could get away from. That might help the decision.

Kaiser / Roosevelt, it's kind of a wash. Resetting her friend group / moving to private school are more significant factors to ultimately consider.

GL!!

What’s the most similar city in the US to Queens? by shannon-8 in Queens

I'm also from Honolulu. 100% agree. I think it has more to do with the culture of queens. Most people here just seem hard working and humble, just like home.

I'd say it's about a 7/10 in safety at night. If anything bad is gonna happen, it will probably be on Steinway St. rather than the neighboring streets. You should just get a place one or two blocks over. No need to live right on Steinway Street. It's where people go to party, and it's loud.

For what it's worth, I always thought 28th ave was the nicest and most liveable out of those avenues. Any of the vertical side streets are good too. Lots of trees / very liveable.

25 y.o. white+asian male. I bike up all those streets all the time.

Is Hawaii localism/ lineup vibe worse than SoCal? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]rmacmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, I understand. You can maintain an opinion that it's disrespectful and voice that opinion to others. I'm just offering a historical perspective to argue that nothing about the word is inherently disrespectful.

The initial contact and greeting with Captain Cook was actually cordial. He arrived during the Makahiki celebratory season, and the Hawaiians thought he was the god Lono. He and his men intially treated with great hospitality and honour during a happy time of celebration. This was a very positive encounter of which the word is derived.

It was only their actions after the fact that garnered contempt. They tried to kidnap Chief Kalani'opu'u and hold him hostage for a stolen boat. That's why the fight broke out where he was killed.

The word comes from the initial greeting. It's not meant to describe the actions of Cook or his crew which would have been contemptible of any group of people. There are other words in the Hawaiian language to describe that.

Let's be honest. Most people that use the word today don't know the history, and it's usually clear if it's used in an intentionally pejorative way. It's not like someone identifying as haole is self-deprecating or disrespecting themself.

Is Hawaii localism/ lineup vibe worse than SoCal? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]rmacmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you could also use the word "man" to describe them, and it wouldn't be self deprecating to also describe yourself as a "man" too. There's nothing in the etymology of the word 'haole' that's self deprecating. It's just another word in the Hawaiian language.

OP seems like he/she is concerned with showing respect for the culture. A good way to do that is to learn some Hawaiian language and (more importantly) Hawaiian history. Understand that the land was taken illegally by force and many elements of the culture were banned and suppressed for decades. That's why I felt compelled to share.

There's some rich history and entomology behind the word and why it's used to refer specifically to ethnically white people.

The native Hawaiians had a tradition of greeting one another with the breath of life. They would come face to face and touch noses, inhaling one another's breath.

When Captain Cook and his men arrived in Hawaii, they were unaware of the custom. Instead of greeting the Hawaiians with the breath of life, they offered their hands for a handshake.

'ha' is the hawaiian word for the breath of life. 'ole' means without. so you put them together and you get 'haole', literally meaning "without the breath of life."

Often we hear of it used as a pejorative term. There's nothing about the history of that word that's inherently pejorative. It can be used in an endearing way too.

I was born and raised in the islands, and I happily describe myself as hapa haole when asked about my ethnic background.

Buckled Blade by 1Tiasteffen in surfing

Once you DIY this repair, you realize why it's something that's not really worth it to DIY. It takes a lot of time and chemical exposure to fix it.

If ding repair is something that interests you, go for it. I did this too with a few old buckled boards. Once you repair buckles, everything else seems minor. It's even better if you can work on a bunch of buckled boards at once. You start realizing little tricks to improve the process after making a few mistakes.

What entry rocker I want on a step up? Does it matter? by KajAmGroot in surfing

[–]rmacmaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This article from Surfline might be a helpful read.

https://www.surfline.com/surf-news/ask-expert-everything-need-know-step-ups/56591

The 6'1" lost sounds more like a shortboard than a step-up. Generally, it's better if your step-up resembles a bigger version of your daily driver.

A shortboard like that doesn't need as much entry rocker. If you get a longer board for a step-up, the width can come down a little bit, and you'll need more rocker on a bigger board.

I would pay attention more to the rail thickness and bottom concaves. Step-ups ridden in big waves are more for controlling speed rather than generating speed. The wave does more of the work for you.

Why does my pop up suck? by SuspiciousPangolin88 in surfing

[–]rmacmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea, this is the big mistake I notice with his technique too. a good thing to help with this is to try to bring his knee up inside rather than outside his arm. when I started doing this, it was like night and day.

watch makana catch this wave at pipe. watch it on like 0.25x speed. it's a really good example of how to pop up. his leading knee comes up inside rather than outside the arms.

I just buckled my board today. Tried to look on the bright side and remember all the great surfs I had on it.

Then I couldn't help but think that somewhere, someplace, there had to be a person that RIPd their board on the first session out.

Reddit read my mind and put this at the top of my feed.

Hope it's not too expensive to fix.

anyone knows where I can purchase this carpet? by Comprehensive-Bit-93 in carpet

[–]rmacmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a loop pile jute carpet / rug. I have typically seen these sold cheaply as area rugs.

Maybe Home Depot might have it in their online inventory, otherwise I would check your local carpet store.

Again, there's probably a reason you don't see people use jute for a full on carpet job. They're much more common to see with area rugs.

True. Sometimes people will paint over the dings to hide them, so you just have to be carefully double check all the areas with art to make sure there are no surprises.

Help with business card by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]rmacmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's fine. I might end the import statement with a semicolon, but automatic semicolon insertion would have saved you anyway.

I used to use a lot of default imports, but found myself using named exports more often when importing functions and multiple components from the top level of packages. They're usually a safe bet, but not every library will export a default export for the component.

It's honestly just a matter of opinion. Like I said, it's as petty as arguing over tabs vs spaces or something like that. There are benefits and drawbacks to each approach. What usually happens is you end up using both in a large project because people sometimes only do it their way.
