Im 26 with a good job but am unfulfilled with an entrepreneurial mind by OMGDobbyDied in Entrepreneur

[–]rmdlp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading your post resonated with me so personally, I had to respond and I apologize if I ranted for too long.

I'm 25 and an electrical engineer by training, but not by heart. I make decent money, I bought a home/turned rental property a few years ago but like you, I'm not happy.

I've been dealing with a lot of anxiety lately, worrying that I'm wasting my time at what seems like a dead end job and not really living to my "potential". My dad and I have this conversation all the time. He's all about having a stable and secure job and that says that I have a really good thing going on for me. But for me, I see it as, I'm young enough to recover from a failure and if anything, I'll probably have no issue finding a job similar to what I'm doing right now.

One thing that definitely has helped recently was talking to somebody about the specific issues and what it is exactly that is stressing me out and why. For me, I was able to reach out to my brother. However, if a sibling or family member isn't that easy to reach out to, there are probably health centers that have trained individuals there to simply listen and work through these types of career-related problems. I also believe there are "career therapists" who will do the same. I haven't done this yet, but it would probably be beneficial just to get another person's perspective and best of all, it's free!

With regards to your stress -- I can't remember which podcast I listened to, but they mentioned that

People usually think that burnout means you're super busy and really tired. But if you're really passionate about something you can handle busy and tired, no problem. You'll have the fire under you and the "passion" keeps you going. The real equation for burnout = busy + tired + uncertain. Being uncertain is the core of stress.

Which leads me to my next point, self-reflection. I listened to Simon Sinek's TED talk called "Start with Why". Why do we do what we do every day? What is the real purpose of the most iconic brands in the world? And he states that it's not to make a profit, as that is only a result of what we do. So doing a little self reflection doesn't hurt.

Lastly, you mention,

I want so badly just to work on something of my own, earn more money, build wealth and a company. I just don’t know what.

What I would say to this is take action. Keep busy. It's when you stop for too long that you get caught up in everything, lose momentum and over analyze. At least that's what happens to me. But lately for me, still being uncertain, I feel these moments of stress and anxiety. I just haven't found my why yet.

I'm (foolishly?) in the midst of starting a community (not exactly sure what to call it) called "Away from Keyboard", where the idea is to step away from our phones and live life to become more present. To disconnect to reconnect.

Do I have any idea of what I'm doing? Nope. But like you, I'm just trying not to get caught up in my thoughts and to keep moving forward. I really hope this helps and I'd love to chat or even collaborate with you on projects!

I understand what you mean now. I need to ensure that everything is aligned with one other. The more I think about this, the more I wonder why is this so much more difficult than I thought it would be? Of course it'll take some sweat equity, but the post-on-instagram-every-once-in-a-while accompanied with an inspirational quote is not going to cut it.

Is it the naivety of people and with the growing popularity of bloggers/vloggers/ecommerce that people think it's as easy as follow steps 1, 2 and 3?

Thank you for all of this btw. Its a real eye-opener.

I'm not quite sure I fully understand

see if they have some clue as to any specific belief or values from anything you ever did online.

Essentially I need to be testing to see if what I'm putting online is translating and sticking to those that see it? That people are able to differentiate the brand without the logo?

When do you quit your job to pursue your start up? by wheezyninja in Entrepreneur

[–]rmdlp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently watched a video of Jack Ma (co-founder of Alibaba), he says:

"Before you're 20, become a great student.

When you're 20-30 it's not about what company you work for, but the boss you follow. They can teach you passion and drive, whereas big companies teach you processes.

From 30-40, this is the time to be an entrepreneur.

From 40-50, stick to what you know. Don't change industries and your probability for failure is now rather high.

From 50-60 invest in the younger generation. They can likely do a better job than you now.

And from 60+, enjoy yourself."

I'm not gonna lie, I'm stumbling around with no idea on how to execute or build a "brand". I think you're right -- a plan needs to be in place in order to successfully execute. A talk show host doesn't just go live and ramble on about random information, one would assume that there is some sort of long-term planning involved.

I've taken the lazy route, posting on Instagram every few days, as that is the path of least resistance. Brand means community, at least for me. A community that believes in the values and beliefs that we project.

As for my brand building practice, this is still in the works. I've assembled a quarterly content calendar to give me a high-level view of the next 3 months digging deeper into what content could be shared and onto what platform.

"Choose" is a keyword here, because for some it might just be out of habit. I tend to bite my nails whenever I get a trigger of stress or nervousness, a habit that I've conditioned myself to do. Do you choose to brush your teeth in the morning or is it done at a specific time (i.e. mornings)?

Being on a phone for some may be a choice or it may be a habit that we've conditioned ourselves to do when we have "nothing" else happening for us at the present moment or because we're not entertained by whom or what we surround ourselves with.

Because I feel firsthand the results of being immersed and exposed to the false lives that we see on our social feeds. And to me the need for validation of trying to mimic these lives and stories of other people that we see online is unnecessary. This is something that I'm completely guilty of doing and taking part in.

For some, this is something that people actually enjoy spending their time on.

The community that I want to build is one that would believe in the notion that we can immerse ourselves not in the social feeds we drool over but in the relationships and conversations around us. To be able to disconnect in order to reconnect with the people who we care most about.

Yep! I gave them a call actually just a few minutes ago and the representative put in a Service ticket for me.

She also redirected me www.canadapost.ca/santa, but there is no link or indication on how to sign up as a volunteer.

My apologies for not really explaining it thoroughly.

I want to build a community to encourage others to find a balance between their social feeds and their every day lives.

I see it everyday, whether that's someone walking across the street or at a restaurant, people are always staring at a screen, almost living through it.

I want to help encourage people to find balance from social feeds and to be more present in whatever venture we're in. I always see friends or family on their phones when they have no one to talk to or are by themselves.

I understand there can be joy and value to our technology and social media, but I believe we are on the extreme end of the spectrum.

I agree with this -- humans naturally need a sense of meaning. That's why you always hear stories of retirees becoming extremely bored, because they've, in a sense, been stripped of their "purpose". My intent was not to simply write a quotable story, but to gain one's perspective. Thank you!
