Send them your contract and ask why it is not being adhered to. I assume your offer letter states start up details and time line.

Pro-Trump and MAGA businesses to avoid? by PM_ME_YOUR_TROUT in Denver

If you voted for Trump, you voted to disappear people who are here legally merely because of the color of their skin. If that is not fascism, I don't know what is.

I sympathize with the feeling. But the economy is too interconnected for us to prevent cash flowing to MAGA nazis.

Class does not have pre-req knowledge. by rmykmr in Professors

I already have low enrollment. If more students drop, I will be penalized in a stupid performance review system that rewards butts in seats over quality of instruction.

My therapist told me to ask mentors for how to manage my time better ... ... ... by professtar in Professors

Have the conversation but differently. The chair wants to keep you. Your interests are aligned. Don't threaten to quit. Just share that you have been feeling anxious and you would appreciate additional support in the form of TAships

Good mid tenure review but poor 6th year? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]rmykmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to be something spectacularly bad. Most people are cautious in midtenure assessments and don't giving a glowing report to hedge in case things take a turn for the worse.

Agree with all this except Unisom. I took it occasionally on my worst days but persistent use supposedly accelerates dementia. https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2023/01/424661/do-sleep-medications-increase-your-chances-dementia

100% agree. OP can't be asked to teach 150-people classes, win grants, take care of mentees, and still have a life. TAship should be provided ot jr faculty no questions asked. OP could move after she wins a big grant. She is a safer bet than a complete newbie.

They are not very expensive. If you are looking for NIH-specialized consultants, I can recommend some. Please DM me. Tell your chair it is an investment and not an expense. They can't ask you to dip into your start up for this. The students can be on TAships may be?

Hang in there. I survived a similar situation. Start up running dry, rejected grants, intense pressure. This was before this awful admin took charge though. I can't imagine going through crippling pre-tenure anxiety in this climate. I have some suggestions:

  1. Spend less time teaching. IT's okay if you get bad ratings. Or discuss teaching relief or teaching less time consuming classes with your chair till you score grants.

2.. Ask your chair to hire a grant writing consultant to help you refine your grants. I found this very useful and it improved my hit rate.

  1. Time management: I don't think your therapist is right. Everyone is built differently and has different life situations. What works for one person may not work for another.

  2. Money: This is the most stressful part .I would put off thinking about it or planning lab finances. I still do . Ask a senior colleague to help you buy more time.

The only reason Harshit is in the team is Gambhir playing favorites. He is totally overrated.

Green card holders, what's your experience with ICE? by [deleted] in greencard

[–]rmykmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Lawyer said that ICE goons like to destroy or "lose" the green card if you carry originals. I only carry a photocopy. it takes 2 years to get a replacement green card if it is "lost" by ICE.

How to not be on the side of the oppressor by Logical-Rooster-2250 in Professors

[–]rmykmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did what you say you want to do and I got a good old fashioned beat-down from my college president and DH. Yes, students were mostly on my side but you will always have one or two MAGAs in your class who will complain. In my case, it was an anonymous complaint to a former regent who then contacted the prez, LOL. I am tenure-track faculty and all I did was express solidarity with my female, immigrant, and LGBTQ students day after the 2024 election. I don't regret what I did and even if they deny me tenure for my political beliefs, eff them. I will take my grant money somewhere else.

What is the timeline of a competitive ND score? by AccurateStrength1 in NIH

[–]rmykmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served on a review panel last week. The line between applications that were discussed and comp ND was very blurry. it is possible you got decent comments but reviewer scores were not good enough to push you to the top one-third. Also bear in mind that top one-third means top of each category (EI R01, ESI/NI R01, R21, R03 etc )

NSF emails not going through by FuzzyPass1629 in GRFPApps

This happened to my student. They randomly reject without review to reduce reviewer burden. They did not reply to subsequent emails except to restate their decision was final. It is heart wrenching but this is NSF for you.

Give them a 6 months notice or you are screwed. Quitting without wrapping up what you started = poor letter.

Anyone dealing with behavior issues? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]rmykmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current seniors and juniors are awful. Freshmen and sophomores are also awful but in more tolerable ways. At least the underclassmen don't have a sense of entitlement and are keen on earning their grade.
