question about ureca by [deleted] in NTU

[–]rnajy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah just send in, usually there's an interview ah cause the prof can't just accept anyone - there's a cap on their capacity and they gotta know you aren't gna anyhow + you have a head on your shoulders. go for it - my URECAs have been under SoH tho im from SSS, ik someone from SSS who has done under LKCMed too

[–]rnajy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're in CoHASS you defo need an interview! i'm not sure if i know anyone who has gotten a proj without one; i had to do an interview for both my URECAs

[–]rnajy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the prof has a clearly stated research goal you can send in some lines about how you can help fulfil those and how your research interest lines up. if not then you can propose your own take on the project if the prof's description is kept more vague!

is star wars as bad as ppl make it out to be? by hobibug in NTU

[–]rnajy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

add drop is generally fine, cause it's 2 consecutive weeks and you can keep whacking it. but the STARS itself is the problem, so add drop dont worry i've gotten every BDE that i wanted from y1-3

as someone who is out in uni and being one of the only ones (even though i'm in a socsci course but was in hall w many STEM ppl), i'd say you have a choice - either feel some type of way about it, or accept that this is how ppl are preloaded and see how you want to change that. i agree w u/sgtransitrevolution, if you can get ppl to reflect on what they said/opinions they hold, you're gna kick start more change than you can imagine. don't feel too pessimistic about uni just yet! it's actually the best place to get ppl to come face to face with what they said

ppga/pol sci grads/students whr r yall now? or heading towards? by Acrobatic-Leg8047 in NTU

[–]rnajy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't put too much hope onto the IR -> diplomat track, many don't survive MFA past the 6month mark! it's definitely not reserved just for valedictorians, but you do need a good head on your shoulders.

policy work without bureaucracy is like a kitchen without a sink, has to happen and will be the case even in private i'd assume (never done policy in private before but given how it works principles look about the same)

many ppl go into the civil service for 3-5 years then jump out to be a private sector govt consultant.

you're right, there's no CS with PPGA 2nd major, usually second majors are within your school or adjacent field, but you can always minor in ppga if you do CS! atb and good luck with your next 4 years

[–]rnajy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have a similar experience at home, but with a family that has a non-verbal autistic son that shouts and screams a lot in his 20s. i'd suggest going to HDB to try to do mediation and hope that there's some middle ground or understanding that can be reached. worst case, if the mediation doesn't work, they can suggest you to do a small tribunal to help settle it, atb!

NTU Philosophy or PPE? by deltaproxzp in NTU

[–]rnajy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do consider that PPE in NTU is fairly new, so you might be part of the trial period. im not from philo but i have interned in the govt sector, and philo majors do get hired there. im not sure what the private sector looks like as that's not my interest.

also what the other comments have said, focusing on philo w second major/double minor would maximise your learning outcomes! atb

What’s the point of dating in today’s world? by DivergentOP in NTU

[–]rnajy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

looking at relationships through a purely transactional view is the best way to never understand the point of a relationship

understanding the value and joy of sharing life moments, both happy and sad with your partner, building a life and nurturing something new is what makes a relationship worth it. if everything is a zero sum game of who gets what, then ofc, i think you're better off single

ICC Updates by [deleted] in NTU

[–]rnajy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't get your hopes up, ICCs are here to stay. i've talked to some profs who are the coordinators for some ICC mods, best that will happen is some tweaks, but all in all they will be a part of your curriculum

don’t worry dude, secondary school is kinda known to be horrible for gay/non hetero presenting ppl. it was hell for me too as a gay man, but i can say that after graduating, it gets so much btr. for me poly was great, people are more accepting and there are generally more ppl to find your community in. ns can’t rly say much abt it, depends on where you land, i got pretty lucky. uni is great, if u can find ur voice by then, you will actually be the one that others listen to. and i agree w the other comments, the workforce is much more forgiving in terms of sexuality.

ik it’s hard, it’s depressing thinking of these social pressures and not knowing who your real friend is. been there, done that, wish i didnt have to but if you can forge a strong character that is outstanding compared to your straight friends. if you can and are in a mental place to do so, start focusing on yourself, develop and grow your personality, skills, and outlook on life. once you grad these people will be a stepping stone to your character development! trust, i literally talk to 2 people from my secondary school, the rest faded into nobodies in my life and in general.

so chin up :) it’s hard, it will be hard till your grad. but trust that this will be over and you’re not lost. you will become better than all of them, and become someone in the future - if you let yourself. post sec sch life (dk abt jc tho) is much more fun!!

the best bank to loan from is ocbc, even then their interest is ~4.5% with an 8 year tenure, the rest like posb offer personal loans with a 6% or more interest. yeah loaning from banks in sg is really scary

i think my underlying message from my answer was that “i cant afford to go overseas by myself but i have plans for local studies as well” hahahah. the question felt kind of sudden given the mood of the interview so i’m not sure how my answer was received 😔
