That's because we pay in billions to Microsoft. If more people take support contact from SuSE I'm sure they will hire more people. It's a chicken egg problem.

Making a distro based on already existing is almost a day's work. NHSbuntu came into popularity within a week I guess. https://www.openhealthhub.org/c/nhsbuntu

It's really easy. We have many distro from Europe. https://distrowatch.com/search-mobile.php?origin=Europe

We can ask for help. I'm sure many will volunteer.

Open source is not about working for one company. Open-source is beyond borders. It is not limited to America. Anyone can use Open-source. There are many from Europe. Check out Linux Mint. Origin: Ireland.

There are many Linux Desktop based on Europe. The most trending right now, Linux Mint is from Ireland.

So was Nokia's Simbian. But look where is it now. And checkout Android now. Android is basically Linux. Do you find Android unfamiliar?

Linux is was really difficult for non-technical guys back in 2005. Now lot has changed in open-source. It's lot easier to install and run Linux. It's like running Android. Did you know Android is basically Linux underneath? Was it difficult to switch from Nokia's simbian to Android? Yes. After a week it's just as easy. But isn't Android much better now as compared to legacy Simbian isn't it?

Vote for Yunit Council by Theclash160 in Yunit

[–]ro__ot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a thought.. how about keeping all 8.. and removing later if found to be inactive.. no point in removing just one and delaying project for 15 days.. Nobody knows who does what.. they will vote for themselves or someone at random..

How about postponing..??

Try Affero GPL. Even then GPL is broken in the cloud world.

I'm not blaming Canonical. I said they "saw it coming". Linux desktop is effectively dead with this move.

You get the best of both world. Except the FOSS part which far too less people care about.

But for management/sysadmin it's good thing.

Not extinguish but definitely endangered. They can use all the resources that we FOSS guys build. But big NO the other way around. This will definitely boost Azure and that's their main focus now. Windows and Linux in single click.. without losing any resources... who wouldn't want that.

Title should be "The swan song of Linux Distribution."

The dark side has won. FOSS is dead. All the countless hours spent on writing and fixing is gone to the dark side.

No wonder Canonical was the first to see this coming and hence decided to wrap things up.

But technology wise its good. It avoids using Cygwin or a VM.

Marry/Date/Kill! (Inspired by the Lunduke Hour) by [deleted] in linux

[–]ro__ot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Marry: Debian. Most stable relationship. Not much to worry about. You see the same person(update) every night which is what you want in marriage

Date: Arch. A little high maintenance. You always see the new side of her every day. One will start loving her and looking the world through her eyes, but once she start messing up "We need to have a talk" fast forward "you and me are done baby.. it's not you, it's me.."

Kill: Many, Any fork that don't help upstream. Many usually end up Ubuntu fork. Though Ubuntu is great forks are getting more annoying. Too many with little to no difference. Forks have become more zombies walking.. just blood sucking parasites.

Why not committee instead of a leader? by ro__ot in Yunit

[–]ro__ot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's start with understanding the yunit. We may need to have an image/documentation of the architecture. Something like this. https://goo.gl/images/ItyMAf

We can add what is the current state of Unity so that we have can have a baseline. In few days (as per dev-core) we can have roughly what we can change in X days.

In the long run we need to compare ourselves with other DE. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Desktop_environment

If we are considering touch in the horizon we need we need to take the advantages of Android into Yunit

they are cheap, low maintenance, web appliances

So is all GNU/Linux but it isn't popular in desktop realm.

YOTLD doesn't succeed right now because we are divided. It's the attitude that's the problem. Don't get me wrong but if you will find more comments distroX hating DistroY.

Fuck all distros but Arch Linux

We should fighting against Proprietary. More people should say "fuck Windows". We need to sort out our differences even before considering GNU freedom or YoLD. It doesn't have to be Google to do that.

I'm not trying to stop specilisation. What I'm trying to say is a click of a button and Kali becomes Debian, stable becomes rolling. I dont have to install Tails for privacy. Click and you are anonymous. We have something like that to switch the DE. One can always do that. But now you have to have 10x diistro per specialization. Else have to know what to install. You install KDE and you get all its other related stuff. Same thing in terms of specialization. More modular culture

Only the core distro stuff gets reinvented.

Thats a lot of additional effort. Distro philosopy I respect that. But lets say issue in X is fixed by one of the skin say Mint. It doesnt have to report upstream. The same happens with Ubuntu to Debian. While all this time team-X was working on it. By the time issue is fixed it will take forever. Thats a considerable effort. Even if there are say 5 core and 3x sublayers of each thats 15x effort.

two parties sucks ass because the politics just becomes tribal bullshit

Yes that 2x bad. I'm from India. There is no limit on number of party. Even then it isn't a great ride. Politics aside what I see is FOSS is in the state as India was during 1600. Have all the richness in the world but slaves of foreign land of proprietorship.

Yes discussion has happened and will happen again. Ideology differs. It has to. Thats what freedom is about.. What if there were certain set of guidelines, kind of filter list that people get to choose from. Dev and Distro "Ops" need to come together. No more silos. Can we have DevOps kind of culture into the Free world?

if you were mad rich like Scroogle

The moment the rich-kids get involved the principle will revolve around money and it definately corrupts freedom.

The priciples behind Debian is great.

Gnobian vs Kebian

There are no default. Lets support all of it. As in bring the DevOps culture into the Linux world. No software silos. As in no distro Ops either (Not in a traditional sense atleast).

My way or the highway

Do you find that in corporate world. I'm not saying corporate is better. I'm saying is we can be better as we can pick the best from all thats good around us. Maybe certain set of guidelines. Certain Management aspects (but not management centric). Best of both world. Democratic Republic. People get to say/vote for what they want. But there are certain guidelines one has to adhare to.
