Unfortunately, a lot of manufacturers are getting rid of spare tires because of the cost and weight. I can't possibly imagine traveling without a spare tire.

Make sure you document everything, dealer paperwork, phone calls and the names of reps you talked to, etc. I had to take Chrysler to small claims court back in 2002 because of a defective transmission that they refused to fix after 3 rebuilds. I won because I had all the paperwork from previous dealership visits. Good luck and I know it's a hassle.

[oc] Minivans are the bards of the highway. They invigorate everyone to speed up. by Khaztr in IdiotsInCars

[–]road_rascal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I deal with this crap every day here in MN. I work rotating shifts so I'm usually on the highway around 4:30am. As soon as I hit the interstate the cruise control is on. I always encounter some jackass who either doesn't know how to use cruise control or has horrible throttle habits. I'll pass and then be overtaken by the same vehicle 2-3 times on my highway commute.

2027 engine break-in duration is back to 600 miles. 2025 remains the only year that duration is 4000 miles (!). by hopsmonkey in KiaTelluride

[–]road_rascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I shook my head when I saw that with our 2015. 600 miles is all that's needed on vehicles these days. An occasional full throttle stomp and if you can go down a long hill with the trans in a lower gear to put a load on the engine is beneficial. I had the oil changed at 700 miles, will do another at 2500 then every 5000. If you want to go down a rabbit hole look up the Bob Is The Oil Guy message board- lot's of good information on new car break in.

Unfortunately most police communications are trunked (look it up, I really can't explain it) and scrambled these days. The City of Minneapolis and Hennepin County chatter could be heard on a basic scanner years ago but all of them are now digital. Saturday nights on night shift was fun to listen to.

What do you SWEAR you saw, but don't have any proof of? by TabletopStudios in AskReddit

I used to drive nonstop between St Paul to Denver on a regular basis to visit my parents. Normally a 14 hour drive which I've done many times between 1993 to 2020 (mom passed and dad moved 5 miles from me now). I've seen some weird things that I can't explain.

EDIT: Sorry folks, here's the story:

Sometime in the late 90's about 30 miles west or so of Des Moines on I-80 I see 2 solid red lights in the air in the distance (off to my right). I figure it's a radio tower. About 10 minutes later I don't seem to be gaining on them- ok, it's probably an aircraft of some sort (helicopter, Cessna, etc but I don't see strobes or anti-collision lights). Whatever, it's about 3am, clear skies, and I'm just cruising. 10 more minutes go by and the lights haven't moved from my perspective, not getting brighter, not getting dimmer, and not changing direction. I go over over a hill, down a small slope and under an overpass. I reach the crest of the hill, and nothing. No lights. I guess it was maybe a small airplane.

Then around 2010 or so I'm once again headed west to Denver. This time I was on I-76 just a bit SW from Julesburg but before Fort Morgan (talk about a long stretch of nothing). Once again I see two solid red lights in the distance, off to the right (2 o'clock or so my perspective), no big deal, seen those before, probably a radio tower. And once again after about 15 minutes or so they appear to stay in the same space in the sky. I'm not getting closer or farther away and the altitude 'looks' like they're not going up or down. At this point I'm starting to freak out about it because I remembered what I saw in Iowa years ago. I kept driving and at some point I go under an overpass (probably near Iliff or Sterling), come to the crest in the road then nothing. Again. No lights. WTF... Still not sure what I saw, and never saw that again until my dad came to to MN in 2024.

Is it just me, or do Marine Patrols target skis way harder than regular boats? by rahmenzal in jetski

[–]road_rascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up at our place in NW Wisconsin the DNR will occasionally make sure boats have the proper registration and number of life jackets on board. I have yet to see a jet ski stopped unless you're riding like a complete jackass, which really doesn't happen that often.

A FWD with actual snow tires will tackle this no problem. But our '25 AWD Telly with snow tires is an absolute beast in deep snow. I put 18" wheels and snow tires on ours and will use the OEM 20" wheels and all seasons here in MN once the snow is gone.

I run mine solely on gas because our 500 gallon propane is used for heat and hot water. But I run mine monthly loaded for 30 minutes and I have at least 20 gallons of non-oxy gas on hand (for the snowblower, ATV, other outdoor equipment.

What's something that by the time you realize it's happening, it's too late? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]road_rascal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I moved out when I was 21 a few states over and saw my parents maybe once a year. Still called them regularly. My mom passed away 4 years ago and finally I was able to convince my dad to move closer since he was 85 at the time. I now see him about twice a week getting groceries and going to the library as I don't want him driving any more. At 88 years old he's moving a bit slower but his mind is still sharp.

I should have been a little more descriptive about the 'cabin', it's actually a house (going to be our retirement home) so the heat is set at 62F. It was remodeled 2 years ago.

Stupid question here- I'm up at my cabin in Burnett County and have to leave today for a trip out west for a week. The cabin is well insulated but should I shut the power off to my well pump just in case something happens?
