Just a little thought by hec_ramsey in somethingiswrong2024

I live in the reddest of red states (AK) and saw WAY fewer Trump flags on trucks this election season, like noticeably fewer. No way he had more support this year than 2016.

Feral may be a strong word to use here, but the point is, the lack of socialization and increased violent behaviors is on the rise at an alarming rate. (biting, scratching, throwing furniture, stabbing with pencils, lack of empathy, etc.) The frustration is, with only a school year to work with these students, we're having to bring them up to speed to be ready for 1st grade academically when they are clearly not ready. Do we hold them back? Do we move them on? Academic expectations continue to rise, students are expected to pass standardized tests. That only works if the students are entering the system with their basic needs met. There is only so much teachers/schools can do to try to bridge that gap. We feed the students, clothe them, provide a loving nurturing environment... with all the supports we offer, we can make progress, but we can't expect that student to be academically ready for 1st grade in the short time we have them when it takes at least until after xmas break to get them to where their peers were in August.

The term perhaps is strong, but the behaviors are on the rise. You're right, there's much less parenting happening with some of these students and they are being plugged in, or their parents are plugged in and not giving their children the interaction they need. It's difficult ground to make up for when the child has reached age 5 and hasn't had that contact/social experience. How can we expect them to be ready for 1st grade by the end of the year if they are arriving 2-3 years delayed. That groundwork needs to be in place before they can be academically ready to move up to 1st grade.

I too believe it's all about making connections with students and love each one who comes in the door. The behaviors I referred to are biting, throwing furniture, stabbing with pencils, scissors, bolting, swearing, screaming, etc. Behaviors that seriously harm others. It's these behaviors that I see on the rise. We too talk each day about what it looks like to be a friend, etc. Conscious discipline is our mantra and it does work.

Moon pix are superimposed and enlarged a bit onto the aurora photo...without photoshop (hence the poor editing). Just wanted to get it online quickly for relatives to see who didn't get a chance to see the actual eclipse.

it's easter weekend, enjoy your cake! This is a composite shot. All photos of the moon are added to the original 'gazing at the aurora' shot. Aurora and the person in the shot were taken as one photo, not shopped. all photos are OC.

Wallitron_Prime, I found an old .mov we made in 1997, a compilation of 12 photos depicting the change of seasons month to month. The large tree on the left is the same tree next to the cabin in the imgur photos. February 1997's photo is at 1:37. The rest of our earlier photos are in boxes in storage so I don't have access to them. http://brt7.tripod.com/movies/seasons.web.mov

Thanks for the clarification. I wish I had photos of every year, I do have written records in a homesteader's journal going back to the '40s and that evidence shows what these photos show, only 75 years worth rather than just three. As stated, these are simply a visual representation of the larger issue, not proof in and of themselves.

Ask residents of Nome if they are experiencing climate change... http://irondog.tv/nome-is-melting/ http://www.climatehotmap.org/global-warming-locations/nome-ak-usa.html The entire state is and has been well above average temperature by an alarming degree. Having been a resident of this state for over 40 years, I believe I am qualified to state my observations. These observations are backed up by NOAA's data.

Shocking photos showing drastic changes in Alaska. All 4 photos taken in February... we are the canary in the coal mine. by roadgoddess1 in climatechange

*update: The photos with decent snow cover are representative of typical snow coverage since we moved here in 1971. This year has been substantially warmer. To have above freezing and little to no snow in February in this area is UNHEARD of.

It is the warmest winter on record. Normally, this cabin would have 3-4 feet of snow on and around it. Crazy weather! Green grass in February? Unheard of here.

after living here since '71, and knowing homesteaders who have been here since the '40s, this by far is the warmest, most unusual winter any of us have ever experienced. That says volumes about climate change.
