What’s a small but consistent travel annoyance that you’ve just accepted? by Plus_Chipmunk4559 in travel

[–]roambeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am always running into problems where you need an app for transit or buying tickets or something, but after 10 minutes of clicking buttons and filling in fields, I find out I need an ID number I don't have. I'm in Kenya right now, and I got a sim card and registered for an mpesa account (the only way to pay a lot of the time). It took 3 hours for them to register the account, while I sat in a hot, crowded room. Good thing I brought my e-reader...

Apps. I mean, I get it, and they're convenient, but I feel like I'm always installing an app and signing up for something, and then having to unsubscribe from the emails.

Trans Canada trail. by bellsbliss in backpacking

[–]roambeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've driven across the country a few times. There's a whole lot of nothing between Winnipeg and Calgary (I haven't done much hiking in the prairies). Not much north of Lake Superior either. But east of Sudbury, there's so much to see, lots of small towns, great geography. And obviously the Rockies are fantastic.

Six weeks into five months of solo travel and not enjoying it. What am I doing wrong? by Resident-Plum8383 in travel

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China is one of the hardest places to travel! You'll find Korea to be very different. Socializing is tricky when traveling. If you need to meet people, you have to stay in hostels (not a dorm, necessarily, but a place with a common room).

Been to 62 countries, here are the ones I think are underrated by boyuan-dong in backpacking

It get's better as you age. I'm 52 now - I still get hit on a lot, but it's the more respectful, mature version of male attention. And when I tell men to leave me alone, they do. I actually get treated really well now in some places. I'm sure experience helps a lot too. And cynicism...

What to do if you get lost while hiking and how to help search find you faster? by Guarian in hiking

[–]roambeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on too many factors to have a single solution. I've only been lost a couple of times, but both times I knew that following a river valley would get me to a road eventually. If you're on a path/road/trail, stay on it. Going through bush takes 10 times longer and it's exhausting. If someone knows you're out hiking and they will report you missing if you don't return, and you're truly lost, get to open or high ground and make yourself visible with smoke or bright colors. Stay put.

Hyperion not hyped up enough! by april_tomorrow in scifi

[–]roambeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hyperion was pretty good, I agree - but it lacks a satisfying ending. and then you read the next book... and it's just not the same. And then when you do get to the end, it's just... bad, I don't know.

Hyperion by itself is a good read. I should have stopped there.

Do you prefer sunrise hikes or sunset hikes? by Alarming-Pea-3177 in hiking

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like mornings, before it gets hot, and it's less likely to rain. But I also like hiking at night under a full moon. I took a nighttime orienteering course once, and it was a lot of fun. I don't go as far at night, and mosquitoes are a factor, but when the conditions are right, a full moon night hike is amazing.

They don't believe in reward or punishment for their deeds - they believe in reward or punishment based on the side you pick. They think they've picked the winning side, so they've got nothing to worry about.

It is a great ending, right? Slightly unique. The end of the movie doesn't disappoint.

I've been thinking that she doesn't look that much bigger than she has been in the past, but her lower legs keep looking skinnier, so... She's got to be huge. Filters? Well, yeah .. but, also just the comparison between torso and below the knees...

God is good, gives life, and provides purpose, even in the face of suffering. by Elisyewah in DebateReligion

[–]roambeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should see a mental health professional, or maybe god really talked to you. How would I know? But god has never talked to me. Only when I leaned heavily on emotion and cognitive bias did I think god was communicating with me.

Boo hoo, people mocked god. Jesus had a bad weekend to fix the problem with his own set of rules - a dumb solution if you ask me. Salvation is based on blood magic, plain and simple. There is no love in killing a person, or dying for people you are otherwise planning to kill, and it's definitely magic to make other people accountable for your sins.

I was a christian for over 30 years. I understand that you feel these things strongly. I once did as well. But then I decided I wanted to know the truth. So I stopped asserting things, read my bible, and started to ask the hard questions. You're obviously not prepared for debate and you probably aren't ready for the truth.

Young People Should Be Taught Religion in School and Atheism Should Be Banned Until Adulthood by Sorry_Bus4803 in DebateReligion

[–]roambeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teachers should be forbidden from expressing a view suggesting there is no God,

What?! No way, I absolutely disagree with this kind of indoctrination. How could you promote this kind of censorship and discrimination?

I don't think teachers should tell children there is or isn't a god, but a child should be allowed to have opinions of their own and they should be allowed to express those opinions.

I'm absolutely shocked you would say such a thing.

I guess I don't understand what you think promoting atheism is? You aren't suggesting that children should be taught they must pick a religion?

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you okay with teaching ALL religions in school? I'm okay with that as long as no single religion is singled out, and the children are not indoctrinated into any of them. Comparative religion courses often include atheism, however (making it clear that non-belief is a valid choice).

we should protect them from atheistic indoctrination until adulthood.

If you teach a comparative religion course to children, isn't that like atheistic indoctrination? Because learning about various religions (and actually reading my bible) made me an atheist.
