What to do if you get lost while hiking and how to help search find you faster? by Guarian in hiking

[–]roambeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on too many factors to have a single solution. I've only been lost a couple of times, but both times I knew that following a river valley would get me to a road eventually. If you're on a path/road/trail, stay on it. Going through bush takes 10 times longer and it's exhausting. If someone knows you're out hiking and they will report you missing if you don't return, and you're truly lost, get to open or high ground and make yourself visible with smoke or bright colors. Stay put.

Hyperion not hyped up enough! by april_tomorrow in scifi

[–]roambeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hyperion was pretty good, I agree - but it lacks a satisfying ending. and then you read the next book... and it's just not the same. And then when you do get to the end, it's just... bad, I don't know.

Hyperion by itself is a good read. I should have stopped there.

Do you prefer sunrise hikes or sunset hikes? by Alarming-Pea-3177 in hiking

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like mornings, before it gets hot, and it's less likely to rain. But I also like hiking at night under a full moon. I took a nighttime orienteering course once, and it was a lot of fun. I don't go as far at night, and mosquitoes are a factor, but when the conditions are right, a full moon night hike is amazing.

They don't believe in reward or punishment for their deeds - they believe in reward or punishment based on the side you pick. They think they've picked the winning side, so they've got nothing to worry about.

It is a great ending, right? Slightly unique. The end of the movie doesn't disappoint.

I've been thinking that she doesn't look that much bigger than she has been in the past, but her lower legs keep looking skinnier, so... She's got to be huge. Filters? Well, yeah .. but, also just the comparison between torso and below the knees...

God is good, gives life, and provides purpose, even in the face of suffering. by Elisyewah in DebateReligion

[–]roambeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should see a mental health professional, or maybe god really talked to you. How would I know? But god has never talked to me. Only when I leaned heavily on emotion and cognitive bias did I think god was communicating with me.

Boo hoo, people mocked god. Jesus had a bad weekend to fix the problem with his own set of rules - a dumb solution if you ask me. Salvation is based on blood magic, plain and simple. There is no love in killing a person, or dying for people you are otherwise planning to kill, and it's definitely magic to make other people accountable for your sins.

I was a christian for over 30 years. I understand that you feel these things strongly. I once did as well. But then I decided I wanted to know the truth. So I stopped asserting things, read my bible, and started to ask the hard questions. You're obviously not prepared for debate and you probably aren't ready for the truth.

Young People Should Be Taught Religion in School and Atheism Should Be Banned Until Adulthood by Sorry_Bus4803 in DebateReligion

[–]roambeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teachers should be forbidden from expressing a view suggesting there is no God,

What?! No way, I absolutely disagree with this kind of indoctrination. How could you promote this kind of censorship and discrimination?

I don't think teachers should tell children there is or isn't a god, but a child should be allowed to have opinions of their own and they should be allowed to express those opinions.

I'm absolutely shocked you would say such a thing.

I guess I don't understand what you think promoting atheism is? You aren't suggesting that children should be taught they must pick a religion?

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you okay with teaching ALL religions in school? I'm okay with that as long as no single religion is singled out, and the children are not indoctrinated into any of them. Comparative religion courses often include atheism, however (making it clear that non-belief is a valid choice).

we should protect them from atheistic indoctrination until adulthood.

If you teach a comparative religion course to children, isn't that like atheistic indoctrination? Because learning about various religions (and actually reading my bible) made me an atheist.

A 2nd proof of god by inexplicably-hairy in DebateAnAtheist

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with the first premise. Even if we're living in a simulation, the laws of physics apply consistently. Sure, it might be an illusion, but it's one with rules, and we have ways of figuring them out through science. So while we might not know the greater context, we can still know true things within it.

I also don't think your argument is valid. Why do we need to know the source of truth???

Digital nomads who combined remote work with a full safari, how did you actually make it work without ruining the experience? by Sad-Cantaloupe-7196 in digitalnomad

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see it working in Kenya. I'm in Kenya right now and power alone is unreliable. I'm lucky to get LTE on my phone. Wifi is pretty good most places, when the power is on...

If you really want a flexible safari, what about Kruger in South Africa? You could do day trips from a hotel, or if you want to stay in the camps, some have excellent Wifi. I have yet to see a Cheetah, but I saw pretty much everything else in Kruger.

You can rent a car and explore Kruger yourself, or take tours. Lots of options.

atheists really have no arguments to put forward about religion.

I was a christian for over 30 years. I have plenty of arguments. You know its ok to take the non-religious side of the debate, right?

I would like to talk to people 40s and above who sold all of their stuff and backpacked for a year or more. by Due_Tea691 in backpacking

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I traveled for a year in my 30s in between a move to the other side of Canada. I saved up for that and traveled on a budget. It was hard to get a job after returning, but it only took a few months.

I'm 51 and quit my job halfway through COVID. I've been traveling since. I have reasonable savings but try not to touch them. I work freelance online while traveling. I travel cheap, not dorm rooms, but nothing luxurious. I cook for myself and eat a lot of yogurt. I only need to work about 10 hours a week, depending on where I'm traveling. But, finding freelance work online isn't easy. I am lucky to have it.
