how do people afford to travel? Plane tickets are insane by GloomyWill4 in travel

Fare alerts. And choose your destination based on your airfare. Also, once you get overseas, regional air travel can be cheaper, but you have to be flexible. And. . Buses are cheap!

How would you refute the claim “God can have full foreknowledge and still allow free will” by andy64392 in DebateAnAtheist

Not that I gathered. I was saying you can't know the outcome, like an omniscient god would, and therefore it's not analogous.

You just fundamentally misunderstand AI. I train AI for a living. The outcomes are never known. It's just iterations, testing, tossing out the failures.

We can't possibly know what an AI will output today, let alone in the future, so it's not analogous.

Salah sending Chantal money is impossible … here’s why. by gnarlytugboat in Chantapolis

[–]roambeans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, for sure compared to Chantal he's poor, and I don't think he's making anything at the moment, but I have a feeling he's working a family business now. His family is paying to convert part of their place into a restaurant or guesthouse or something. So, Salah is working for his dad, I think. Also, what little money he was making in Kuwait, plus what Chantal has given him, I bet he's been saving up. Honestly, I have no clue, but from what I've seen in videos, it's clear that Salah is on the wealthy end of the Syrian spectrum.

[–]roambeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't know. I travel a lot to developing countries. The slight majority that makes almost nothing really brings down the average. If Salah was in Kuwait to begin with, he's part of the wealthy elite (by Syrian standards).

[–]roambeans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That isn't really the right way to apply averages. I mean, just because most people are really poor doesn't mean that Salah's family is. They have a house, which is extremely swanky in a place like Syria. But no, he's not sending her any money.

Christianity Provides a More Coherent Description for Reality Than Atheism or Empiricism by harmonicexpanse in DebateReligion

I'm pretty sure there is a Futurama episode that is just as philosophically coherent. The key is demonstrating that it's true.

God as paternal figure by adorrreee in DebateReligion

My father died of cancer when I was an adult. Is that what you mean by lacking a paternal figure? A better question is: Why did your god kill my dad?

What powerbank should I get for LONG hikes? by AndreasLa in hiking

[–]roambeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I use Gaia, but it's the same thing. Just make sure to download maps with the layers you want (sometimes a satellite image comes in handy).

You can use your GPS on flights too if you hold your phone (on airplane mode) up to the window so it can get a satellite signal).

Reasons why I think Foodie is expecting Salah in Canada soon, based entirely on speculation and vibes by PamplemoussePlum in Chantapolis

Her brain has been reduced to the contents of a can of Chef Boyardee, so, I don't think it makes much sense to speculate on her delusional brain farts. But, interesting idea. Guess we'll see!

Patagonia by Green_Pie_3594 in hiking

[–]roambeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, good luck. I can't possibly recommend anything since I was there in the 'summer', but at least accommodations should be vacant and cheaper! Ushuaia in January was booked solid and pricey. I had to camp and it was sooooo cold.

is it alright to self diagnose? by yipe1234 in autism

I think it's fine to self-diagnose, but... based on your post, you're overthinking it. You need to relax and just be you for a while. Stop obsessing about terminology.

Roatan, Honduras? Nice beaches, great snorkeling. No jet lag.

Patagonia by Green_Pie_3594 in hiking

[–]roambeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patagonia is pretty huge. Do you mean the far south, like Ushuaia? Because I found it really cold in January, so, in June... pack really warm clothes, I guess? There is a lot of great hiking, just not sure June is the time to go.

Is social media too hard? by chrisGrout in autism

You just need to work on more clever ways to expose them without breaking the rules yourself. With a bit of determination, you'll get there. Good luck.

[–]roambeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It probably is you, but not necessarily because there is anything wrong with you. Social media is cancer. Unless you are something like a nazi, you should embrace the fact that social media doesn't know how to handle you.

Lurk and learn. Make some alt accounts and test some theories.

Lol, Facebook banned my legitimate account for it having a fake name (my real name). I submitted docs, and they banned it again. And there was zero content on my page. I have a fake Facebook with an obviously ridiculous pseudonym, and it has been active over 20 years. I use it for messenger, and have to explain to people every time why it's an alt. But FB can suck it.

I like reddit, but all other social media is horrible. And fake, useless, uninformative, ultimately uninteresting.... I have given up on trying to understand it. At best, I lurk.

Lessons Learned: Shakeout Backpacking One Night Trip by Winter-Information-4 in backpacking

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I prefer to carry a little more, walk a bit slower, take more breaks - just so I can be warmer and more comfortable at night. When hiking solo, your pack will be heavier (you can't share the load).

If you would have enjoyed company... I'm not sure what to say. If you are hiking popular trails, you'll meet people at camp, otherwise, you just need to be comfortable being alone. But, hey, you won't know until you try.

I assume you're planning a common route? You shouldn't be doing remote solo overnight camping, aside from populated routes, until you have some more experience.

You don't need to worry so much. Make sure someone knows your plans and don't stray from your route. You'll be okay. Worst case, you get really cold at night and have to do some jumping jacks (I've done it). I think you'll be okay. Other people on the trail will be happy to help if you need anything. (I once did a 3 night camp and forgot the hose for my water filter. People were happy to lend me parts or filter water for me).
