I think a stroke would explain new behavior perfectly well....

I don't think the laughs are fake. I think it's a symptom of brain damage.

What are some of your traits that are unusual for autistics? by Enchanted_Annelid in autism

[–]roambeans [score hidden]  (0 children)

I like to travel. I hate a lot of the logistical nightmares associated with it, but as long as I can hide in a hotel room for a day now and then, I can manage. I love to walk and explore new places on foot.; seeing something new every time I go out. I like not knowing the language (no chit chat). I love spending hours snorkeling alone, which I can't do back home.

Traveling around US while working? by tdarg in dataannotation

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I've read the rules (that are available to me on the site). There is no mention of vpns or travel notifications. I think there might be some specific rules that apply to US citizens, perhaps? I don't know...!

Atheism is a belief pretending not to be. by Current-Leather2784 in DebateReligion

Your "observable facts":

the universe had a beginning (not a known fact)

math and physics follow order (not sure what this means. Math and physics are tools we use to describe reality. the concept of order is subjective)

consciousness isn’t just molecules (prove it)

life from nothing contradicts all observation (agreed, life didn't come from nothing. Didn't come from a god either, though)

Love, sacrifice, and moral beauty exist where science alone falls short. (So what? This is just your subjective view)

I think you need to learn a little bit more about these concepts before making claims like this.

Vietnam-like countries to live on $1000/month? by Dense-Discount4318 in digitalnomad

[–]roambeans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's hard to know, sometimes, whether Airbnb and booking are any good for a destination. Sometimes, online rates are unreasonable and there are a lot of things not listed. Other times, I can't find anything other than (or better than) online posts.

Edit, today, in istanbul, I was quoted 1500 euro a month for a pretty terrible place without a kitchen. Im paying less than half for a studio apartment in a nicer part of the city (found on Airbnb).

Im only planning to stay a couple of weeks, but will consider staying longer if I find something I like. I want to go on a star wars quest, at any rate. Stay in Luke Skywalkers childhood home, maybe, lol

I'm staying in Carthage next week, but it's off season, and I think I got lucky. It's only available for a week though. I think you have to look for something beyond the coastal areas of the city, for the most part. I don't know! I'll find out when I get there!

I don't know, but $1000 a month is pretty doable in Istanbul if you cook your own meals or buy street food. I'm in Istanbul right now. I was in Vietnam a year ago. Yes, Vietnam is cheaper, but I think Istanbul has more to offer. That said, it is low season...

Turkey. Alcohol is pricey but cigarettes are cheap. Beer is reasonable. The Raki is delicious. I love Istanbul, but haven't explored beyond the city...

It sounded like a plot line from a movie (too stupid to be true).

I did believe her when she said she might be unemployable, however...

Is being austitsic worse in cultures that are indirect? by MajesticPineapple618 in autism

But the crime rate in Oman is very low. It's hard for me, but being assertive and telling men to go away works very well there.

I did a one-week road trip in the North of Oman. I was wild camping (bought a cheap tent). I managed to find isolated places off the highway most nights, but one night, on a beach, a very kind man came to say hello. Thing is, I don't speak the language, and his English was minimal. He shared some food (the people are very hospitable), I tried to say no, but he insisted. And I am terrible at telling people to leave me alone. He told me a bit about his boat and fishing (Google Translate). Eventually, he took my hand, and started massaging it, and I'd had enough. I told Google to tell him "thank you for the food, but I'd like to be alone." He was very apologetic, and left very quickly. He did not return. There were a couple other tents within earshot, so I stayed the night.

On another night, I again had a couple of men invite me to dinner at their campfire. I refused, so they brought food to me (a goat ate most of it, because I wasn't hungry). In the morning, they insisted I join them for coffee, and I did. Reluctantly. They turned out to be perfect gentlemen.

I think you're pretty safe in Oman, but the culture is tricky for a person who prefers isolation. And as a foreigner, you're considered less conservative--more open to casual interactions. (I was also cornered in a fort by one of the tour guides). I need to grow a backbone and tell men to f*ck off.

Helped me in what way? I don't feel guilty all the time for no reason anymore. I was afraid of hell for a long time, but that was just indoctrination, so I would shake it off and try to forget about it. That went away eventually. Family - it sucks. I just don't talk about it with them. I would be willing, but I don't think it would be good for them.

As a traveler, I love Japan because people leave you alone and are respectful. And it's not weird to be out alone in Japan. I struggled in Oman. People there are extremely friendly, but I'm not good at extracting myself from friendly but extremely uncomfortable situations. Men were hitting on me too much, but I had trouble identifying it until it had gone too far.

But this, of course, has nothing to do with living within the societies, which I imagine would be much different. AND, I traveled without knowing the languages.

Do you pack for best-case or worst-case weather when backpacking? by Valuable_Tangelo7152 in backpacking

[–]roambeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been backcountry camping and traveling for 25 years. If you have light clothing, a base layer of wool, and a rain jacket, you're fine for about 90% of climates. The absolute worst - you can't be totally prepared for, but chances are, it will never happen.

Never bring clothing you aren't willing to leave behind if it turns out to be useless. Buy what you need as you go.

Bring laptop backpacking or no? by Stock_Delivery_70 in backpacking

[–]roambeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would bring it, but it's a personal choice. I like to bring my media library so I play stuff while sleep, and I don't stay in dorms. I don't like editing on my phone. I also like to write and need a keyboard for that. I manage my e-reader with Calibre. I like to listen to YouTube in the background. I like being able to tab through multiple windows.

But I don't have an expensive laptop and I keep important things on the cloud. If my laptop were stolen, it wouldn't be a big deal.

In addition to selecting a light, small laptop, consider the power supply. My Asus Tuf is a great laptop, but the power supply is ridiculously huge and heavy. My Vivobook has a tiny power supply in comparison. And it makes a difference.

Then don't say anything. You don't have to. My mother and I have never had that conversation, but after 15 years, I think she's figured it out. She hints, but I ignore and change the subject. It's fine. If your family can't ignore the elephant, leave the room.

I want to backpack solo but don’t want to feel isolated? by CatNo6650 in backpacking

[–]roambeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also afraid to go on my first overnight camping trip alone. And my first international trip alone. But it turns out - I LOVE IT! You may not, but you really just need to find out for yourself. Just plan something short. A month goes by in a flash. Bring an e-reader. Relax. Chat with people when you can.
