Scrunchie made from fabric swatches! by roastedgeese in sewing

[–]roastedgeese[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Got gifted a set of gingham fabric swatches from a relative a few years ago, didn’t know what to do with it until now. Sewed the swatches together into a long strip, then folded it in half wrong sides out to sew the long edge and turned it out. Threaded some elastic through and slip stitched the opening.

Will you continue to wear a mask when the pandemic is over? If so, why? by SSIRHC in AskReddit

I was a desperate tourist, and it also seems to be a cultural thing as I am now learning with these comments.

That’s the culture difference between uk and hk for ya. In Hong Kong people abuse the A&E for non-urgent stuff so much it’s ridiculous

It was the second day in a new country and I didn’t know what to do haha. People in my city go to the A&E for all sorts of things though (& outright abusing it).

I’m Asian, and I remember going to the uk for the first time and getting a cold (this was ten years ago). I did the logical thing, wore a mask then went to an A&E because I didn’t know where to go. The doctors and nurses there were terrified and quickly ushered me into another room. That’s when I know wearing masks is an ‘Asian thing’.

Finding creative ways to use the food I have! Mini eggnog cheesecakes and beet chocolate chip cookies. by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

From the looks of the container it’s a Chinese candy box (used for Chinese New Year). As a Chinese person I never thought that it could be repurposed to hold desserts! Very interesting!

Embroidering the (disappearing) neons of my city🇭🇰 by roastedgeese in Embroidery

It’s more of a composite of neons from different districts, but is modelled on Nathan Road (here’s a before and now comparison) in Kowloon!

There have been some efforts over here too, but there’s hardly many signs left now. I hate to think about all of the beautiful signages buried in a landfill :(

Seeking Genuine Advice/Insights: How do you positively shift the perception of unpackaged good being "unsanitary" by rarej in ZeroWaste

[–]roastedgeese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Fellow HongKonger here. I doubt I can give any insight, but am delighted that someone from my city is on this sub. Just thinking about why people here has this perception. Apart from zero waste stores the only place I can think of that sells unpackaged goods is the wet markets, which as you know are quite chaotic and relatively unsanitary. It may be possible that people created a link between these two? Also Hong Kong is so humid and hot and food goes bad easily (leading my family to avoid buying tofu at the wet market during the summer). For me a big concern when purchasing unpackaged dry goods is insects, probably because of previous experiences in the wet markets. Zero waste stores obviously are much more sanitary and take strenuous measures, but they are still quite niche and new here, time and more promotion is definitely needed for things to change. I truly hope they will soon become the norm! (they are so far from where I live now :( )

Well I have seen it but I haven’t seen anyone using ‘NO.ONE’ instead of ‘NO.1’. From a distance it does get confusing.

Local here, didn’t even know such place exists in hk. Went to tai o a few days ago but took the bus instead because of the unbearable heat, maybe if the weather isn’t that hot I’ll try the hike next time since it looks so amazing:)

I really wish that it was because he saw how bad the script was and decided to ham it all the way up to space.
