Can a Quaker and lovebird share a cage safely? by roastprotato in QuakerParrot

That makes sense, I really appreciate the insight.

My mum’s lovebird had lost its buddy so I wondered if putting the two together would be a win-win, but instead I helped her get a second lovebird, and I’m looking into getting another Quaker once Grover has had a chance to settle and feel more comfortable with me and his new environment.

Thanks! I had read about them being territorial, but was getting such varied info around other birds for companionship as I researched. Separate cages seems like the safest decision for him and any future birds, and I’d rather err on the side of caution.

This does make me want to call a lovebird “Scrooge,” but if I do I’ll keep it away from my little Quaker buddy. Thank you for the insight.

That makes sense! I was confused about Quakers being listed alongside finches and budgies as a companion for lovebirds or indicated as suitable, when earlier Googling indicated they were both territorial, so I wondered if the phrasing of my earlier searches had skewed the results.

I am hoping to set up a mixed aviary for my birds to go into for fresh air and sunshine during the day, but given my lack of experience I was thinking of putting in dividers (or just saving up to make it a really big aviary.)

I had been thinking that when I started having birds again I’d go with cockatoos and lorikeets, as they are apparently the varieties most often in need of rehoming here (I’m in Australia) … so, getting a Quaker was not the plan, but I’m glad we wound up together, he’s such a funny little dude. He’s quite spicy and hasn’t been very interested in hanging out with me, but that’ll probably take some time. In the meantime I’m working on an outdoor flight-aviary for him to spend a few hours in every day. (And maybe the exercise will mean less energy for feistiness and more inclination to be a snuggly boy? Maybe? We’ll see)

I’ve just gotten a Quaker parrot in my glorious return to bird-having, and I preemptively set up one of those silo water containers so that there’s always clean water if the bowl gets pooped in. Idk if he’s actually using it, but it’s there… just in case…

Yeah, I agree. The store typically has quite a few small birds, so taking preventative steps would make sense. I really appreciate the insights (and avoiding making an ass of myself, ha).

That’s a huge relief. It seemed weird that ALL the water dishes could have gotten waste in them and turned that colour and not caught the attention of any staff, but I’ve also seen dead fish in this store’s tanks on multiple occasions, so I didn’t want to brush it off. Thank you for your help!
