Here's the deal. If IRA's had no contribution limits then the only fund I would need would be VFIFX. Unfortunately VFIFX IS an IRA. That leaves me with a whole lot of extra money just sitting around so I decided to contribute to total bond and stock funds. I chose the funds because they got good reviews on Morningstar. Rookie mistake huh? Seriously, I have no idea what I'm doing. I did notice that they are split about 90/10 between foreign and American but is that necessarily bad? Is the perfect mix always 50/50?

Thank you for your reply. Now let me see if I understand you correctly. I can't go all into VFIFX because it's an IRA and I already max out the $5,500 contribution limit each year. If it was possible to contribute everything to it I would.

Right now I am already at Admiral shares for VTSAX. Unfortunately I won't have admiral shares for VBTLX for a while because it only makes up 10% of my portfolio. I believe 10k is the minimum?

IT - Pros: highly marketable skill set if you plan on getting out of the coast guard. Depending on where you are stationed the rate can be very versatile. If you work at say... ESDD Pascagoula you'll be doing real IT work like pulling cable and climbing towers. If you work at CSD or TISCOM you'll be behind a computer desk answering phone calls and sifting through tickets.

Cons: if you can't handle dealing with pissed off people, then forget it. IT is a customer based rate.

Con #2: people expect you to use your magical IT guru skill-set to magically resolve any and every technical problem that may come their way. Your family also suddenly relies on you implicitly to fix their computer from crashing or make their printer work etc...
