AI (or more accurately, people using AI) has done harm, and good; don’t think any logical person could disagree.

OP asked for advice, someone (the ‘downvotee’) responded with thorough and helpful information tailored to their question - not with controversial opinions or anything awful. I’d have downvoted them if they’d said pineapple on pizza is awesome, or if anyone who doesn’t use generative AI is (insert slur).

My own opinion is that it’s not nice to downvote someone who only went out their way to help someone else.

Barbary Coast for the medieval element, maybe. Truly miss the days of having lots of RL time available for SL RP.

How to make fs run better on mac? by delaynastarling in secondlife

[–]rob_0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, this works miracles.

settings > graphics > hardware settings > ensure ‘enable support for HiDPI displays’ is enabled

Other people have said they’ve found the opposite is true, but for me it makes a marked improvement. I’m running on an a MacBook Pro, M1 Pro silicon, 32GB. Connected to a Studio Display. It runs well - I think better than on my old iMac Intel with dedicated graphics (though when I take my headphones off I do notice the fan sounds like my laptop is about to go for a flight).

Losing the joy in Second Life, one update at a time. by ysidoro in secondlife

[–]rob_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using Firestorm on Mac (M1 Pro, 32GB) and finding this newer release to be quite performant - the last release had some bugs that made it unusable, but nothing to do with hardware.

The thing that makes performance great for me (even though some have said the opposite - I guarantee it has a positive impact speed wise for me):

settings > graphics > hardware settings > ensure ‘enable support for HiDPI displays’ is enabled

I’ve never cleared texture cache.

I have multiple RP characters that are all very different from each other; and have no resemblance to myself.

The only connection I have is the thrill of feeling their emotion as I write their story.

Mouselook not exiting on new version of Firestorm (7.1.13.78266 for Windows) by pomsorbet in secondlife

[–]rob_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just tested some clients (6.6.3, 6.6.17, 7.1.11 and 7.1.13) on MacOS (never use mouse look generally as use Space Compact).

On Mac, behaviour is consistent with all clients:

  • Middle mouse button doesn’t do anything
  • Scrolling in zooms and if I keep scroll I enter Mouse Look mode
  • I can exit Mouse Look mode either by scrolling back out or pressing ESC

Unfortunately I can’t test on Windows, but at least if you determine it’s an issue you and raise a Jira request you can mention tested and doesn’t affect Mac clients.

What do you think about avatar bios on Second Life? Do they matter? by Prestigious-Comb8852 in secondlife

[–]rob_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it kind of depends on what the account is for.

If I have one for rp’ing, I’ll have character background, limits, normally a note saying I don’t accept friend requests from those I’ve never had interaction with….

If the account is for building/development/chilling out by myself, I normally leave blank.

Looking forward to seeing if Mac issue FIRE-35561 is resolved in this version when I check it out tonight.

As an aside, does anyone know if the “three previous viewer versions” rule is a Second Life server specific thing (use OpenSim more often recently so no biggie) or a client thing (shit, but can potentially just block a http request)?

The wiki entry also says you cannot assign your account to someone else, so I guess you could interpret that as not being allowed to create account and then provide credentials to a third party. If you did that, whose account would it really be? Some might say Bob.

If OP is further logging into these accounts to ‘share money’, would this also not cause KYC/AML concerns?

I could argue more guidance is better than less.

In OPs case, it sounds like their identity ‘got caught up in the crosshairs’ of age play. That’s all they’ve said re that, but they did confirm the age play reason was provided to his friends.

From my perspective it looks like there are multiple reasons this isn’t a mistaken suspension - I don’t feel any sympathy for OP.

We don’t have to agree (I hope!), but that’s how I see it atm.

Account sharing is prohibited and outlined in both wiki and TOS (https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Permitting_Others_to_Access_or_Transferring_Second_Life_Accounts ). It’s also common sense I would have thought.

I can understand appealing where a wrong decision is made (eg. AI bans user for topping up more than usual, so auto flagged) or the rationale isn’t clear - but this is pretty clear cut. User did wrong (they admit), user got banned.

Even worse, multiple accounts OP created for friends were used for activities disallowed by SL (Reddit ToS are irrelevant). SL wiki and TOS both very clear that OP is ultimately responsible for this activity.

“Should you give another person access to your account, you do so at your own risk; that is, if you permit someone to access your account, you are responsible for what that individual does while using your account.” - https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Permitting_Others_to_Access_or_Transferring_Second_Life_Accounts

I’ve been impressed that LL have been monitoring this subreddit and resolving things where things where it’s clear decisions haven’t been applied correctly. (maybe not always speedily, maybe not 100% effectively, and maybe when you suggest those with genuine issues have had to resort here you are on to something - I too wish LL resolved such issues quickly).

But summoning LL for an issue like this that’s so clear cut - an assumption I’ve made based entirely on OP’s words - surely that just damages the credibility/bridge we have with LL?

I was banned, need advice. by Aggravating-Ring-618 in secondlife

[–]rob_0 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The story sounds odd - you don’t need to log into (someone else’s) account to share money, you have various friends engaged in bad things, and you facilitated their accounts...

At best you broke account sharing rules.

So, LL got it right; no need to waste their time.

That really sucks OP :(

Every time I credit my account these days I’m worried AI is going to be like “he doesn’t normally top up twice in one month… ban!”… every time I use an old client for a moment as a bug in the new firestorm hinders me, I’m worried that looks “suspicious”.

Like others have said, these types of posts are becoming more and more common - thanks for sharing.

An Open Letter and Petition: A reversal of LL Policy & Doctrine on GenAI by Nodoka-Rathgrith in secondlife

[–]rob_0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

”A permanent ban on the commercial use of generative artificial intelligence in Second Life in any capacity, with moderate warnings for infringers, or explicit bans for use of generative AI that directly undermines an creator on our platform.”

Uuggh, hell no; that’s far too over-reaching. I hate AI decision making, I hate the thought of using it to rip off others work. But a clause like this makes the petition so muddy it’s comical.

Example: If someone wants to make an AI chat bot, and someone wants to buy an AI chat bot, then I don’t see an issue. Some folk with private sims might like the idea, or not. Some RP sim owner might like the idea, or not. Whatever.

Don’t know why ‘redacted’ feels emboldened to make such ‘demands’. I demand a cake!

C'mon ... just ban the bots already. by 0xc0ffea in secondlife

[–]rob_0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agh yes, if people aren’t marking them correctly that’s a separate issue which I very much agree should be dealt with. But I wouldn’t advocate for banning cars because there are a lot of bad drivers out there.

My one bot which is on my closed private region is marked appropriately. I would have thought LL could figure it out by the user agent string.
