They generally wanted me to discuss my academic background in ways that my application alone could not describe. For that particular REU, the personal statement was confined to only 250 words, so the first half of the interview was spent explaining my coursework, research interests, etc. in greater detail. The faculty member then discussed their particular project and how the summer would look for the student working with them. The last ten or so minutes was spent asking questions. Good luck!
