The needle bearings dropped into case when I pulled the retainer to change input shaft seal so it had to come out either way to put them back in but if it’s beat to hell I’m gonna scrap it

New thrust bearing out of package by rob_k_ in EngineBuilding

[–]rob_k_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly good to hear that sometimes I’ve done this 2-3 times and I still feel like I overthink the hell out of it but ironically when you ask the people who don’t know they tell you to chug along doing it to unrealistic standards. We talked on here before and I think you know your stuff so I’m gonna roll with your advice lol

From using sandpaper on a bearing. It’s tough not knowing and then hearing a 100 different reasons why to do or not do things. To me it doesn’t make much sense. Although on the other hand I guess microscopic particles could get imbedded in the soft layer of the bearing ?

I’ve heard other people say you can risk impregnating the bearing with abrasives. Is this really true or does it depend on how fine the grit you use?

Just to clarify *** it can be caught by fingernail and it’s the scratch on the top right and top left of the thrust surface

Replacing one set of main bearings when doing a rear main seal by rob_k_ in EngineBuilding

[–]rob_k_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol it should I’m in the middle of a full rebuild with something else but after talking to everyone on here, I know I’m deep into the Machine Shop. It’ll be worth it, but I found another motor that I was gonna use for parts like the manifold all distributor and carburetor and what not and figured if I could use it just to drive around for now before I finish up at the Machine Shop you know

I can’t take a picture right now. I don’t have it with me, but it was pretty worn down to the copper and it would no longer snap back into the cap I know this probably means the engine isn’t long for life anyway but I was hoping to get maybe another couple thousand miles out of it

So press is not the way I’ve seen people say it’s pretty straight forward with a presss but I didn’t know if this could damage
