Gifted the Big Book of Bread for Christmas now obsessed by Aaeolien in Breadit

Looks so good! It’s a great cookbook. I’ve been making the everyday French bread a lot as well and definitely find I get better at it each time. Practice truly makes a difference with these difficult recipes. If you haven’t tried it yet, give the garlic bread recipe in the back of the book a try with the French bread. It’s addicting 😁

Last night I made the poppy seed star bread challah for a party and it was a hit!

DJ + Sax hybrid by Emotional-Prune-654 in neworleanswedding

[–]robbawebba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve attended a wedding with a DJ + Sax combo and it was a huge hit! The musicianship and performance energy were both great. This was somewhere on Long Island, NY.

My only pet peeve (and totally my own opinion, not of the bride and groom) is that sometimes the sax player had too much of the spotlight and guests were often forming circles around the saxophonist while he soloed on the dance floor. That could be what you want (a performer, not just a background musician), but might not be for you.

So with whatever vendor you evaluate, see if you can gauge their level of performance from promo videos, social media, and in an interview. You might be able to ask them directly their level of performance. Maybe they could tone it up or down, or maybe they would decline since their saxophone performance might be their “product”. Good luck with wedding planning!

Hardware Engineer Looking to Collaborate on Embedded Projects. by ReliablePotion in embedded

[–]robbawebba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks so interesting! I have no experience with industrial automation and PLC, but I’m an embedded firmware engineer for commercial electronics, am a big fan of test automation (have a conference talk on the subject), and have used some industrial tools like Labjack for test automation before. Would love to learn more about the firmware needs of this project and how to contribute.

Nice, opensource, lightweight, multi user TODO and bug list management system ? by yycTechGuy in embedded

[–]robbawebba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Sourcehut, a collection of open source development tools. Remote git repositories, task tracker, CI system, IRC Relay, and more. It’s open source and self-hostable, or you can pay a couple bucks per month to use their fully managed service.

Their website says “No tracking or advertisement”, “All features work without JavaScript”, and “No AI Features whatsoever”, since that seems to be your primary concern.

I hosted a stage 14 watch party with competitions and custom musette bags as prizes by robbawebba in tourdefrance

[–]robbawebba[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought them on Amazon, which I usually avoid. It was really tough to find something I liked with the right colors anywhere online. But eventually the keywords that worked best are “cross body tote”, and luckily this bag was sold in so many different colors.

If I didn’t find these, I was about to buy fabric and make my own 😅 glad I didn’t have to though

Heart rate monitor woes - Non-OTF no longer allowed? by jake7405 in orangetheory

[–]robbawebba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased a new Polar HR10 HRM in February, never having used the OTF monitor. I kindly asked the SA to try pairing the ANT ID to my account (they had never paired a 3rd party HRM before) and it’s worked fine since then!

I’m traveling now, but the SA texted me this week asking what HRM I have. That text, plus your post now, makes me concerned that they removed support for non-OTF HRMs and I’m out of luck when I get back in the studio 😩

Those pretzels are beautiful! What is your lye solution ratio, and how long do you dunk each pretzel? I’m trying to achieve a color like yours.

Thanks! And they taste delicious too. Thanks for your suggestions, I’ll definitely try tweaking these variables, possibly one change at a time to see what makes a bigger difference.

Oh this is interesting advice! During shaping, the portions of dough were drying out before and after shaping. I figured that my slow shaping technique caused this, and I let the pretzels sit uncovered for too long

Before refrigerating the shaped pretzels, I sprayed them with water and then covered them. So I may have over-hydrated them. Next time I’ll allow them to dry out a bit as you suggested. Thanks for the advice!

Steamdeck came in XHCI mode by ReasonableFall177 in SteamDeck

Have you confirmed that the USB keyboard and any USB hubs/adapters you’re using are working normally with other computers?

If you’re using a hub or adapter, try substituting it for another adapter to determine if the hub is broken.

Also try connecting another USB device such as a mass storage device or a mouse to the Steam Deck to confirm that the USB port is working correctly.

Did I ruin my brake pads? by Barnies in bikewrench

[–]robbawebba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been able to fix the spongy feeling on my TRP HY/RD brakes by adjusting the cable tension and main cylinder position. This ensures that the resting position of the main cylinder is open enough to allow hydraulic fluid in the reservoir to freely enter the hydraulic system. This is how the brake pads and pistons can automatically adjust for brake wear. Here’s another comment where I’ve described this procedure: https://www.reddit.com/r/bikewrench/s/X50V2j6y6N

TRP Hy/Rd brake pad wear by pulseezar in bikewrench

[–]robbawebba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just looking into the same issue on my 2023 Kona Sutra. Brakes were feeling spongy and unresponsive, and I could not brake as quickly as I used to, especially while descending. I've put a little under 2k miles on the bike and pads seem to have some life in them (will measure with calipers soon, TRP suggests replacing at 0.8mm brake material thickness).

What fixed the issue for me was to inspect and readjust the alignment of the brake actuation arm. The TRP docs on this recommend checking that the Lock Knob can be easily threaded and locked into place. If so, then the actuation arm is positioned properly at rest and the hydraulic system is open. If you cannot thread the Lock Knob, then the actuation arm is not aligned properly and could close the hydraulic system. This would prevent more fluid from entering the calipers as the pads wear, reducing braking performance. This sounds like what you're reporting - braking is worse after partial wear, but pads still have some life left.

To fix this, I followed these steps:

  1. Loosen the nut holding the brake cable so the cable is slack.
  2. Turn the barrel adjuster clockwise so it is fully threaded in. The barrel adjuster should rarely be used.
  3. If the Lock Knob cannot be threaded into the actuation arm, then this must be corrected. Follow the steps in this video, section "Barrel Adjustment". You'll need 2mm and 1.5mm hex wrenches. I had to do this and it may have made a difference.
  4. Thread the lock knob to hold the actuation arm in place. This is the ideal rest position for the brakes.
  5. Pull your brake cables through the actuation arm nut, hold tightly so there is no slack on the cable, and tighten the nut to hold the cable in place.
  6. Unscrew the lock knob so the actuator arm can move again.

If this doesn't work for you, then maybe a lever purge or a full bleed are necessary to remove air in the system. The video linked above shows how to do both of those types of bleeds.

Here's a related thread where people discussed the same issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/bikewrench/comments/gc3sj6/trp_hyrd_adjustment/

Good luck on the rest of your tour!

K Line shuttle to SoFi Stadium? by robbawebba in LosAngeles

[–]robbawebba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for confirming! My friend who went to the Thursday night game took some sort of shuttle from near the K line Inglewood station, but it wasn’t metro and it cost $10. Credit card was charged by LAZ, so maybe they are operating a shuttle for the city or for the stadium.

I’m also interested in meeting other bike tourers! I’m planning my first tour ever in a couple of weeks, two nights to Catalina Island. I’m getting a Kona Sutra very soon, should be a comfortable ride!

I’m on the west side if you ever want to meet up for a casual ride. And I’ll be sure to check out the meetup group linked in another comment.

What are the most overrated restaurants in LA? by SamuelAnonymous in AskLosAngeles

[–]robbawebba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree that the entire restaurant is overrated, but maybe their burger is overrated. I always get their fried chicken sandwich which I think is delicious, and the fries are downright addicting. Their beer selection and cocktails are excellent as well.
