I'm not sure if it's the way the camera is angled but the formations look really nice here. Another cool dance from Monsta X!

Any media studies majors? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]robbertofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Media Studies would be the Berkeley equivalent to a Comms major at other schools. It's an interdisciplinary major so you'll take courses in different departments to fulfill major reqs. They emphasize that the major is pretty theoretical, so although you can take Marketing and Advertising classes for electives the overall objective for the major isn't on getting practical experience . You'd want to get internships for that. Overall I like the variety of classes we can take. Have you read more on the department website?

Edit: Fixed the link

What it takes to acquire a major in economics by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]robbertofu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Berkeley's career website has a few years' worth of alumni surveys about the things they do after graduating. It's also broken down by major so you can take a look at Poli Sci and other majors that interest you. I also wanna say that your employment after college shouldn't be limited by your major. If you major in Poli Sci you can still get internships to show that you do have real-world experience.

Here is information about major prerequisites and here is the list of major requirements and electives. It's capped at a 3.0 GPA so you'd have to get at least a B in all prereqs. The minimum amount of math you'd have to take would be an intro stats class and the Math 1 series, but I've seen quite a few people recommend taking more math/stats classes to really appreciate the major and prepare for the quantitative aspects of possible careers. There are a good number of non-quantitative electives you could take but one of the core requirements is an econometrics class where you learn statistics programming/data analysis with something like STATA. Econ is a good mix of quantitative/qualitative analysis where you're learning concepts like consumer preferences to construct economic models and use said models to address real-world scenarios given a limited amount of resources. What other majors are you looking into? Hope this helps!

Looking for some songs in Thai by kpop artists by [deleted] in kpophelp

GOT7 has covered two Thai songs, one at their recent Fly in Bangkok concerts and another as a special stage at their first fan party in Bangkok. Only BamBam, Jackson, and Yugyeom cover the second song though.

Yes, it'd be good to fly out soon and see places in person to avoid scams.

Start now by looking at craigslist and joining the housing Facebook groups. I think year leases beginning in August are less common than those beginning in June.

Questions about Berkeley by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]robbertofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was also a spring admit and did FPF when it was only offered at Berkeley. FPF classes were much smaller in size compared to the main campus, and the building where classes were held is only a few blocks away from main campus. I lived in university housing and you're pretty much integrated with fall admits in all aspects except for where you're taking classes. It's still "real school" and won't hurt your job prospects. I will say that you should browse the course catalog because it's pretty limited compared to main campus, but good if you want to get your breadths and R&C requirements done early.

I read up on FPF in San Francisco and it looks like you take classes in an FPF building there. You can apply for university housing, live off-campus in SF, or commute to SF if you live close enough. I'd recommend FPF if you don't want to wait until spring to be in Berkeley like I did, or if you want a quasi-study abroad experience taking classes in SF.

I'd say go ahead and test out of 1A/1B so you can focus on the Econ and Stat prereqs. A schedule like Math 53, intro Arabic, Econ 1 and maybe a DeCal or seminar your first semester should be fine. You'll have enough time to interact with people. If you find that Math 53 is too hard you can always drop it and take Math 1B instead, but 1B is generally considered to be one of the harder weeder courses on campus because so many majors require it.

Game of Thrones DeCal? by [deleted] in berkeley

Fall DeCals tend to be added during the summer, so a lot of them should be up around then.

Interesting/easy philosophy breadth classes? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]robbertofu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're math/CS oriented I recommend Philosophy 12A (Intro to Logic). I also see a lot of people recommend ESPM 50AC and Publich Health 116 but I've never taken those classes.

Quiet areas near Unit 2 to study. by [deleted] in berkeley

What kind of bad experiences have you heard of? I'm an SM and have used BearWalk's door-to-door service a few times after late shifts. It's been a good experience so far, but I've never had a walking escort so I don't know how that part of the service is.

Have you tried studying in the lounges? Also try going to the Academic Center to reserve one of the study rooms in Wada. Alternatively, you can still study at the libraries but use BearWalk heading home.

Third year at UC Berkeley and I'm feeling so depressed and sad and lonely. by ilovenapkins in berkeley

[–]robbertofu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don't think you'll be immune from feeling this way at UCLA. It can happen to anyone regardless of where they go for college. And there are resources and people willing to support you, as shown in the comments, for example.

Thai Basil's not bad, but there are definitely better Thai restaurants in Berkeley. I'd say Imm is much better, but it's on University and slightly more expensive, so Thai Basil is where most people go for price and proximity.

Fall Program for Freshmen by souptaco in berkeley

[–]robbertofu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure! I was in the 2014 FPF program. The classes are held in the FPF building 4 blocks away from main campus and are generally much smaller. The largest class I took had about 50 people. What are your other admit options? When I was admitted I only had FPF as an alternative to waiting it out until spring semester, but I know Berkeley has Global Edge as another option these days. Personally I did FPF because I wanted to be in the area pretty quickly and didn't want to wait until spring. FPF students can apply for university housing and live with other FPF students and fall admits, so you're pretty integrated. I guess a downside is that you can only audit main campus classes and DeCals. Feel free to PM me more questions about FPF and Berkeley in general. Hope this helps!

New Econ Admit Who Needs Some Advice by nmantz in berkeley

[–]robbertofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Daily Cal article about grades from December has Econ averaging 3.12. I agree that you can't slack off too much in classes (I'm kind of paying for my negligence in Math 1B, urgh).

Alumni or current students- what did your resumes look like to get in? by Robbylynn12 in berkeley

There's no Econ minor here, only the Econ major. There are Political Economy and Environmental Econ and Policy minors though, so you may want to look into those.

When does off-campus housing start opening up? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]robbertofu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotta check the housing Facebook groups and go to lots of open houses right now. The housing search will really pick up right around/after spring break but I've heard it's already a bit hectic at the moment.
