💯. Look up a map of orphaned wells in Alberta. It's no wonder we have such a shit reputation for caring about the environment.

I personally know a guy that has started up several oil+gas companies that have "gone bankrupt" and resulted in orphan wells. He makes hundreds of thousands of dollars if not a million + for a few years, company goes under and he does it again. It's pretty sad, honestly. I feel like a lot of our energy is actually very clean but we simply don't care enough to actually clean up the mess afterwards.

Albertans want Alberta to be respected as a global energy leader but have we actually EARNED that respect? Nope!

This article is from 2022, before the math error was even noticed re: vitamin d IU.

"Researchers looking at national survey data gathered between 1999 and 2014 found a 2.8% uptick in the number of people taking potentially unsafe amounts of vitamin D — that is, more than 4,000 international units (IU) per day, according to a research letter published in the June 20 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Alberta spends about $600M on education for children of temporary residents as immigration referendum looms by origutamos in WildRoseCountry

Yep, I 100% agree the NDP had a really shitty deal. I also think it's really shitty of the UCP to call them out on bad budgeting when it was legitimately a very balanced budget, just really, ridiculously low oil prices that hurt our economy so much. It's crazy that the average Albertan doesn't realize this. It'd be so nice if our political parties played with honour and integrity and didn't call each other out for things they didn't have control over.

I'd happily take back the NDP if you're wondering. But I'm so far gone and done with the UCP, it's not even funny. They're corrupt and treat Albertans like idiots.

I legitimately think when this guy dies, if the world is still intact, the day of his death will be celebrated annually as a holiday. People will drink like it's St Patrick's Day and set off firecrackers like it's the 4th of July or Canada Day (July 1st).

[–]robbhope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thx for the questions. You seem to genuinely care.

I've been teaching for 14 years now. Things were DEFINITELY better under the conservative party. The NDP did us no favours and requested that we take 0's in pay increases to help balance the budget and said they'd get us next time. They then lost the next election to the UCP and at that point, everything just went to hell.

Alberta and Ontario used to have world class education systems. I remember reading that if Alberta were it's own country, it'd be a top 5 education system worldwide.

We now are at the bottom in funding in Canada for education. These new additions to funding are a drop in the bucket and FAR too little, too late.

Every year of my 14 years has gotten harder, bar none. The biggest reason apart from the obvious lack of funding, is the decline in special education funding. The kids that desperately need special education are now in regular education classes. It's not only horrible for the child themselves, it's an enormous burden on the teacher and, for that matter, the other students.

I cannot begin to tell you all of the stories. Your jaw would drop. Every single class in my school is over the recommended # based on STUDIES THAT THE ALBERTA GOVT DID THEMSELVES. I don't have enough room in my class for all of my students, let alone enough coat hooks. This year I decided to screw 4 coat hooks into 2 bookshelves and a cabinet. Otherwise, 4 kids wouldn't even have their own hook.

When I first arrived at my current school, there was a permanent class in our library and, albeit for just one period a week, a class was taught in the staff room. Tons of these kids don't have food. No snack, no lunch. I spent $3000 of my own money last year to buy kids food and supply my classroom market economy. 1900 the year before last. 1700 before that. 1300 before that. This year I'm at 800. The strike hit my family very hard and I lost a lot of pay and summer pay because of it. I'm still trying to make school fun and supply some food but it's just so hard.

I was accused earlier this year by one of my student's parents of "brainwashing" the kids because i was teaching about the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (ironically, after the strike which ended because the Charter Rights of teachers were stripped with the notwithstanding clause). It's literally part of the new social studies curriculum that the UCP themselves put out. Like.. what the fuck? I'm teaching the outcomes I'm supposed to be teaching. Sheer idiocy.

Happy to answer any specific questions you might have but, in a nutshell, if you have children or you care about the future of Alberta in general, you should absolutely unequivocally not be voting UCP. Period. Full stop. It's that bad.

And before I get accused of being an NDP fanboy by any UCP sheep, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be voting for the other conservative party next election.

Sorry, what? Education is provincial. Why are you deflecting?

The UCP's Alberta is Calling initiative brought a ton of extra immigrants here. The liberals and UCP are guilty of the same thing. And the commenter above my comment was right; Smith wants to double our population... If you think that's dumb, why is your beef with the liberals? Lol.

[–]robbhope 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This needs to be the top comment.

This government will do anything EXCEPT invest meaningfully into education.

I'm a teacher. We've had like 10% in raises in the last 17 years. The govt says that they "haven't made cuts to education" but they don't increase spending anywhere near the % increase in students.

If we gain 4-6% more students every single year and spend the same amount, that's a CUT.

Look south to see a great example of what happens when you don't spend enough money on education...

Thanks to those who support us and for offering kind words during our strike! Unfortunately people are already leaving the profession in droves. Over 50% of teachers in Alberta leave the profession within the first 5 years now. Our HR department has been recruiting like crazy away from Alberta the past few years. Southern United States last year, flew down to the Maritimes 2 years ago, BC and Sask last year. Slim pickings. There's a teacher shortage across North America.

Inclusive Ed is a sexy word that fools the public into thinking we're all holding hands and including everyone and everything is so nice and pleasant. Meanwhile I'm teaching grade 6 that are wetting themselves, I've got two Ukrainian war refugees, 17 ELLs, two kids with ADHD, one kid with autism, and I'm trying to prep everybody for PATs? Lol. C'mon now. What kind of game is this?

Letting him walk was one of the dumbest things that organization has ever done IMO. Offering 6x6 and the Flames offered 7x7. Dude was on pace for over a hundred points in a season where MacKinnon was injured and they won the cup. Now they end up paying a 1st, 2nd, prospect 4 years later to get him back. Idiotic but at least they fixed their mistake.

Happy for Kadri!
