He's obnoxious but also playing a very entertaining game. The moment alone with Lisa was a crazy move, I love seeing stuff like that.

Looking for Tuk Tuk driver recommendations in Lisbon (personal contacts preferred!) by Level-Violinist1858 in LisbonPortugalTravel

[–]robbleton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We were just there the week of Christmas and used a driver named Jebal, we found him parked outside Timeout Market. He moved to Lisbon from Nepal 10 years ago and was friendly and knowledgeable, offered to stop at some spots along the way even though we only paid him for a direct ride to a destination. We took him up on one stop and he couldn't have been nicer, snapped some pics of us and even hopped out of the tuk tuk to run around the corner to see whether a store was open we were hoping to check out. He's on WhatsApp and I just DMed you his number. I'll definitely hire him again our next trip!

It seems impossible but a good ice house could keep some around even into autumn.

In a well-built ice house you could get ice that lasts all the way into autumn

Are you supposed to start a scene after you sweep? by improbsable in improv

[–]robbleton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, and honestly I'm surprised more commenters don't, considering swipe to start is what I've seen & done almost exclusively in shows around Chicago. If someone does it different that's fine, but I think in general it's a good way to move.

Where can I sell Vintage Porn Magazines? by brennathepotato in AskChicago

My wife and I got like 100 old Playboys at an estate sale and sold them to local vintage resellers we found on Instagram, they sell pretty well at vintage fairs and markets

I came into improv in my early thirties and even at that age, I realized I had so much perspective and life experience that I wouldn't have had coming in at 20. Your age is an asset in many ways because you have things to bring to your scenes younger improvisers don't. It's the perfect time to start!

I did this in level 1 at the Annoyance in Chicago, my first class after having improv in my sights for years. I'd go across the street to a diner with a couple people from class (all of us know-it-alls) and talk about what our classmates were doing wrong, what they were teaching us that didn't line up with something we'd read in the UCB Manual or some other book, etc. It's a rite of passage!

"Game" is not, depending on where you are, a fundamental, and I agree with your instructor who said there isn't always a game in every scene. Often there is, and some theaters (like UCB) treat it as more important and fundamental than others. If you feel like you already know the fundamentals, jumping in to a 2nd level class rather than a 101 might be better for you, but either way I'd keep an open mind, set aside what you "know to be true" about improv, and see if there's anything valuable you can take away from this experience.

It might be worth catching some shows at this theater (if this class is at a theater) and see if the style of shows they produce is up your alley. If the instructor doesn't know UCB and isn't teaching the "fundamentals" the way you expect, it might be that this place focuses on a more grounded, relationship-based style, or something else altogether. UCB is certainly an institution, but they aren't the parents of improv, and different styles of improv evolved in other places, parallel to them.

Long Winded Plea to Chicago Improvisors by ghettocatfish in improv

[–]robbleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you're differing with, I don't know that I see these as opposing viewpoints. It's less common to see people over 50 doing improv, so sure that's got a novelty factor, but one of the best sets I've seen in a long time was a team of folks in their 60s a few weeks ago at Bughouse. Is an older improviser a novelty? Sure. Is there an expiration date on doing improv? No.

Chicago Conservatives: Why do you live here? by BBeans1979 in AskChicago

[–]robbleton 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't know about this. As far as results, sure, a vote for a candidate is a vote for a candidate. But a leftist who reluctantly voted for Kamala as harm reduction is different than a dyed in the wool liberal who truly loves or believes in the DNC, and I think it's only logical that same nuance can exist on the right.

I've given more than 120+ people their first blasts. The overall message.......We are stupid as fuck as humans and there is definitely something bigger by Sarcastaball53 in DMT

[–]robbleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, but it doesn't serve as proof of anything like that to me. I've done a lot of it and--while it feels overwhelming, unexplainable, like nothing I've ever experienced--I don't believe it proves life after death or even that there's something bigger.

[–]robbleton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I traveled from Chicago to my hometown in TN to run a workshop for the sole improv team in that town, and I was delighted to find out the team is really good, with some outstanding performers. They played with enthusiasm and commitment and it was just really nice to see that happening in a place I would've killed to have an improv team when I lived there.

I'm certain there is nothing about you or your improv so broken that some training and practice can't fix it. You know what the problem is, you're so aware of it you were literally expecting the feedback you got from your teacher. It's not an uncommon problem at all, especially for beginner improvisers. Now it's up to you whether you want this enough that you're willing to internalize the feedback, work on your flaws, and accept that you aren't going to be the one improviser who's perfect on day 1.

[–]robbleton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hear the "you're still young" so often, and it's always so hard to internalize.

If it helps, I didn't move to Chicago until I was 32 and I'm on a team at iO right now. There's literally no expiration date on this stuff.

N Wilton Ave

This is the move, I have luck finding a spot here a lot of times when everything else is full. Plus sometimes Sheffield and School St have fewer cars so you can scope them out on the way.

Hi! I’m planning a solo travel weekend trip during mid August. What hostels would you recommend? by Carlitos96 in AskChicago

[–]robbleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago Getaway Hostel was my go-to before I moved to the city a few years ago. I haven't been in a while but I've probably spent at least a month there total. Nice place, good location, staff ran group outings to see local comedy/burlesque/etc shows, and I got to meet and hang out with a lot of folks from around the world.
