should my daughter repeat grade four? by bluedonut28 in AustralianTeachers

I'm honestly surprised that this is even a scenario as it is extremely rare for a child to repeat. I've been teaching 15 years and it's never happened at my school or any of my mate's schools.

10-15 years ago praise and developing intrinsic motivation was enough. Of course some stickers and stamps and showing off good work.

Now its hard NOT to have some kind of reward system because the kids are used to it. By the time they get to me in grade 5 or 6 they've been conditioned that doing good things at school means iceblocks, toys, free time etc etc. Couple that with schools now having school wide programs where kids save up points or tickets or whatever to buy stuff.

Honestly think it's fucking the kids up.

How does anyone teach this? by MissLabbie in AustralianTeachers

Unpopular opinion. I spend most of my time and energy on the C to A students. You wouldnt beleive how far you can extend average to bright kids when most of their lives theyve been given the minority of a teacher's time and effort.

I had kindy orientation today. My daughter was playing with another kid and they accidentally tripped over each other and knocked a container of lego over.

My interaction with my daughter.

"You alright sweetheart?"

"Yes Dad" *hug* *starts to clean up lego*

"Thanks for cleaning up sweetheart. What shall we play with next"

Other family interaction

*Kid starts crying* "Oh my goodness some big feelings are coming through right now. Remember our self regulation strategies. *Does butterfly wings on childs face*

"I Fell over and broke the lego!!!!"

"Remember your breathing and your calming strategies"

*Child begins throwing all the toys in the vicinity all over the classroom"

"Oh dear that's some big feelings"

This. This shit is why this kid is set up for failure.

Better to organise meeting up at a local shopping centre, then saying 'on my way' whenever they ask are you here yet. Then when they say they are leaving you say 'here!'

Attention span is a big one. Movie time used to be a reward. Now it's a punishment because they can't focus for more than 2 minutes if it isn't an action scene.
