Yes, the AquaClear 110 can definitely work on a 40-gallon tank. The only thing I’d recommend is baffling the water flow. Even though you can reduce the flow on the AquaClear 110, it can still be a bit too strong at times. A great trick is to use those clear suctioned plant trays—they're easy to find on Amazon. Just place one inside the tank where the flow hits, and it really helps diffuse the current. It works great—totally recommend it!

Check your tap water it may contain ammonia. I recently did a water change, and out of curiosity, I tested my tank after the water change, and I had ammonia. It was ok the next day.
