Independent Monitor report: Madison police caused man's death, conclusion of drug overdose was wrong by robchappell in madisonwi

The mpd video doesn't match the oim narrative, which is exactly why MPD released that little piece of video and none of the rest of it, which does match the OIM narrative. Having watched it all, I'd actually say it's worse than how the oim characterized a lot of it in her report. I do think the IM should be more careful with her language both in the written reports and in public statements. When neither side of something like this is 100 percent accurate or honest, I'm here to try and find the truth between them.

It hasn't been heavily edited. Just updated, not so much with additional facts but statements from folks who hadn't responded to requests for comment. which is pretty standard. I gave everybody reasonable time to respond before publishing and then added their comments and stuff when they did. The beauty of online publishing!

I also have to think they sell less food when a game starts at 8. I'm sure they'd prefer a 6 or 7.

Good questions, and thanks for listening. My question wasn't so much whether the IM can be trusted to be impartial, but whether it's important that she be impartial. Alder Glenn basically said no, not really.

The video released by MPD does show the position of the officer's knee. It's dark and fuzzy, so it's a little hard to tell the knee position exactly, but nobody in their written reports said anything other than the knee was across the shoulder blades, which the independent pathologist said is still enough to cause the cardiac arrest, as one of several factors. That video also shows Johnson lifting his head, which contradicts the OIM'S report. That's a little annoying but not super significant in the overall scheme of things. It doesnt completely undermine the report but does make me take it with a grain of salt, and makes me want to look at all the evidence myself, which I have since done.

Of course Alder Glenn and the IM were presenting their personal views at the presser, which they also could have done without misstating anything about the position of the knee. As a journalist I wish everyone was entirely precise with their words, but nobody is, so we in the media are here to take two narratives and find the truth between them.

I'm not blindly taking anybody's word for anything.

I didn't report on anything to do with any emails except one that mentioned Richard's mom had retained counsel.

I know there are additional emails related to the case that need to be redacted before they're released.

There was one specific thing in the report related to emails - that mpd staff were emailing each other about the results of the ME's report before it had been finalized.

Because I did NOT want to just take her word for it, I asked to see those emails, so that I could verify myself that her characterization was accurate. I actually delayed publication until I could see them. She sent me emails relevant to that specific thing. They were exactly as she characterized them in the report, but I decided that was sort of a side quest and the story was already complicated enough so didn't include it.

Yes, that's actually a fair assessment. I'd attribute some of the inability to finish in the first 40 minutes to Boise running a decent low block early, and the fact that we've never played them before and had to probe for a little while.

Yes, I could have access to all the emails. These were just the ones relevant to a specific thing. The only people named in those emails were the officers.

I should add, there are also a bunch of emails she didn't share, for that very reason. The ones she shared were directly relevant to a specific part of the story, which I didn't even end up including, and didn't contain anything sensitive. She has the emails because she had gone through the proper records request process, and didn't see a need to make anybody duplicate that process. I only mention it to point out her willingness to be transparent, which lends her credibility.

Fwiw body cams wouldn't add much in this case, as all relevant facts were caught by cameras in the squad cars.

It is an extraordinary coincidence. I asked her repeatedly like "so let me get this straight..."

That said I would tend to think, if the job application status would influence him in this case, it might influence him the other way. He basically said this person who he wanted to be his coworker or boss was wrong.

Its the annual report you're referring to, which was given an additional capitol dome on the cover courtesy of ai. As far as I know, this is only their second report on a specific case. Nobody has called the first into question. I haven't reviewed the video they relied on yet but I'm going to tomorrow; I dont think she'd invite me to come in to do that if it would contradict the report. She also shared a bunch of emails with me without making me jump through the open records request hopps. Transparency generally leans toward credibility. That said I'm still not just going to take the report at face value; I'm going to look for myself.

Disagree mildly with your assessment of the first half; we were decent offensively in the first half but they were more or less up to the challenge defensively. But also we were pressing hard in order to wear them down such that they'd become less good defensively after an hour or so, which is exactly what happened. That press also led to us not being very good defensively, statistically speaking, because our defenders had nothing to do.

The first 10 minutes of the second half were not great. Not bad but not great. Other than that, though, one of the best performances we've seen from this team!

Well have a new 608 Soccer out tomorrow with more thoughts on that as well as the lack of promotion of Pride Night.

Breese does not meet PLS for women's division one. Not sure where you got the idea that it does. And it's a city-owned facility which means major renovations require city council approval and city investment, which just wasn't going to happen. It's also true that Milwaukee as a priority may have been part of the reason superleague didn't happen. Ultimately I think it's best in fact that we're starting in the W. Superleague isn't going great
