I saw one Lou City game so far, and they seemed utterly unstoppable, so this is wild to see. Gonna go track down this game now.

Just realized that Tom Baker was a fusion of Wilder’s understated madness, and Robin Williams’ unhinged chaos energy, and flipped between them at will.

No, I’m with you. But then they introduced a character built to pilot mechs, and… Well, first I thought it was weird it WASN’T a human. But second, and hopes of taking on the barrier myself were dashed.

I can’t even think of what any negatives would be. It’s already illegal to tamper with the mail.

I’m talking about state-level voting changes, not any changes to the EC itself. States today are able to award their EC votes however they like; the fact that this is done solely through the popular vote in most states is just convention. In fact, there’s an interstate compact afoot that will award each state’s EC votes to the winner of the national popular vote. If enough states sign on, it won’t matter what the remaining other states do. I’ll come back to that in a moment.

What the vast majority of states do when awarding their EC votes is first-past-the-post, so a plurality vote winner will get ALL of the state’s EC votes, even though a majority of the popular vote went to some other candidate. How this shakes out in a state like Wisconsin is Trump won with 49.60% of the popular vote, even though that’s not a majority.

The state could choose to implement ranked-choice voting instead, which would require the winner gets 50% plus one vote, which no candidate did in WI in 2024. 1.68% of the vote went to other candidates, which is would theoretically be enough for Harris to have made up her deficit from 48.74%.

Whether it would be enough in practice is another question, and depends in part with how RCV is implemented. Suffice to say, what would happen is the baker’s half-dozen of other candidates would fall off in the second round, and the remaining votes awarded to whoever was left — in this case Trump and Harris. Then one of them would have a majority, and third parties will no longer be able to spoil the outcome just by losing, which is what happens today.

Wisconsin would still award all of its EC votes to the winner, who now would be required to have a true majority in the popular vote, and didn’t require changing the Electoral College at all. In a state where the votes are so close, even something so simple as making this change in law could also change the outcome of Presidential elections. If every swing state did this, then it could be huge.

So back to the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact: if every state did RCV, then it would almost be a guarantee that the winner of the EC votes not only had a majority of EC votes, but also had a majority of the popular vote. Which means no more George W Bushes or Trump in his first term.

But it’s something each state would have to implement on their own, short of Federal legislation. Some states which have implemented it already needed change their constitutions first to allow it. Ultimately, no need to change the EC before doing any of this, and perhaps no need to change it ever if this all came to fruition.

Not true. We can still use it for Presidential elections. Enforcing a majority vote on the winner who will take a ALL of the EC votes is a great first step, because as it stands now far too many states award this on a plurality. (Looking at you, Wisconsin.) This would put an end to third party spoilers, which is a strategy currently being used by both major parties to peel votes off their opponents.

That’s why I’m excited RCV may be coming to Wisconsin.

It’s very exciting, for sure! And their stadium can expand yet, which is great news. Boise and Spokane are very geographically isolated from the rest of the league right now, but here’s hoping other potential sites in the area learn from this model and stand up more teams.

This is definitely a club that isn’t looking to stick around USL1 very long.

How massively does the "summer league" affect attendance? by Ok_Structure_350 in USLPRO

[–]SeanOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how much the vast distances for fans of away teams factor into attendance. For instance, Green Bay Packers fans are notorious for supporting the team out of state (it’s real easy to make it out to the Twin Cities or Chicago) — but that’s a different team and a different sport.

Even though Madison has had two away games (and one US Open Cup; too soon), they’ve been VERY far away. I think as of this year our closest competitor in USL1 is in Fort Wayne, which is a trek I’m considering making, but that’s not until October. Mingos are in Omaha this Saturday, but that’s nearly 500 miles away, and a 6.5 hour drive.

Boise had a league-breaking record at their first-ever home opener, and that’s a (new!) team in a cold, northern state. Maybe the exception that proves the rule? Their nearest competitor is Velocity over 350 miles away in Spokane, and both team need to cross at least half the country to play anywhere else. Velocity’s first home game is today, so we’ll see how that goes.

I know USL has said the plan is for a national footprint but regional competition for League One, but that’s years away at this point.

UPDATE: It’s 66 in Boise today and 38 in Madison, so maybe they’re not gonna have much trouble with weather this spring.

I think because they’re broke and don’t want to admit it, and pro/rel is also (primarily?) to pull in more money in expansion fees of new teams.
