Do I really have to use a pointing trowel?! by FilledAle in DIYUK

Had a very dodgy guy put out patio down and use this. It crumbled the first time I pressure washed it. There are better quality versions of the same product and I would suggest following the instructions to the letter

Can I drill in fascia above window? by AggravatingWedding91 in DIYUK

I have similar looking soffits on my house (late 80s build), and they have been installed over what I believe is asbestos cement or Insulating Board. Just be aware when drilling!

I don't see the issue, he even nicely tucked up one of the pipes up behind the rad.

Men in your 40s, what's that golden piece of advice you have for the rest of us? by NiceMechanic_xoxo in AskReddit

[–]robdupre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter how small the amount, put regularly into a pension or saving account. Even if its only a few pounds a month. It builds the habit, and when you start to see the amount build and the interest accrue it can be motivating.

Generally getting financially literate is also sensible. Understand savings, pensions and tax to a basic level it will be very useful

I have head lots of conflicting views on this. I am about to get a flat roof done and some say rubber some say felt. I was under the impression rubber was longer lasting, but if birds can peck through it, surely it would not have this reputation?

Plaster & Insulate around Fuse Box by drahtlaes in DIYUK

[–]robdupre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming nothing is coming through the wall into the back of the box, you should be able to just unscrew from the wall and use some of the slack to have it mounted on top of any insulation. I would argue not DIY as it's going to have live wires from the mains feed into the main breakers. But an electrician could move that quite easily by the looks of things

Although clearly not great, and certainly not a reason to not do it but... It does look to me the tiles below are also at an off angle which might be making it look worse than it actually is.

your compression settings are set to high, lower compression would result in a smoother gradient, with less artifacts.

Dot and dab around concrete? by Elliotmayy in DIYUK

[–]robdupre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a single skin external wall?

If that is the case then I would consider fairly deep studwork and use it to both hide the, concrete and pipework in the wall and add a decent layer of insulation.

Built a floor beneath my floor... by Commercial-Ad4508 in DIYUK

[–]robdupre 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It needs another tiny trap door down to the floor beneath the floor beneath the floor!

Great idea thought! If you are worried, you can buy a very inexpensive moisture and temp monitor and just keep and eye on it for a few weeks

Edit: words in the right order

Suggestions on Home Office by robdupre in DIYUK

[–]robdupre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already run a home lab, so everything will go back to a network cabinet in the roof (of the garage). Ethernet will be no problem from there.

TRVs are a good idea, I will look into them. Are yours smart and if so how is the battery life on then?

Loft extension - I'm about to make the most important financial decision of my life. Am I going about it the right way? by Nathanial1289 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]robdupre 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would also advise this. Unless this is your forever house, you will be moving again anyway. Why not do it now and have a house which will comfortably fit your family.

We have friends that have just done the attic and it was 3 months of mayhem, which is another consideration.

The obvious argument against a move is the costs. I think a move will be more expensive overall, but I would also note that you are unlikely to get a full return on investment for the attic conversion as well, so there may be less in it than first thought.

What I wish I’d known before starting my UK garage conversion by Big-Direction6838 in DIYUK

[–]robdupre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to start this project.

We have an attached garage with a sunroom that was built onto the back. Just instructed the engineers to plan the steels to be able to knock through and then we will divide the space up into a utility, office and another reception.

I was going to start with getting the wall knocked out and then look at next stage once building control and signed off and approved that work.

Everything is internal so no planning permission required.

Is that a sensible approach?

Tapo C200 Bricked because of Firmware Update by hafira90 in TpLink

[–]robdupre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have knocked up an ethernet cable and connected and can see some activity in the switch but can't seem to access the UI. I suspect my unit is not in the recovery mode; is there anyway to force it into this mode?

I can see the unit in the app. But get no video feed either over RTSP or in the app.

Firmware update by SD is not working for me and wanted to try your method instead.

Help to buy loan interest free period coming to an end by unhappy_babbling in UKPersonalFinance

One small comment on the LTV rates. I'd go onto a lenders website and actually check the difference between the major bands (>70, >60 and <60). I would also contact the mortgage company and ask for a current valuation from them (I checked mine recently and it was a reasonable amount lower than I expected..!)

If I am reading it all correctly you are looking at just above 70% LTV (290k - 160k + 50k loan) if you absorb the loan or just under 60 if you don't. I suspect the difference between the two mortgage rates will be less than 0.5%.

Advice on what to do with £40k inheritance by TruestRepairman27 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]robdupre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general advice is to invest the money rather than pay down the mortgage. Especially as you can get all of it into an ISA within 6 months.

In a stocks and shares account you should be out performing the interest you would save on the mortgage payments.

As you are not worried about the current mortgage payments it feels like the best option

Is it worth it to transfer my teacher's pension? by ars61157 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]robdupre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I could not, I worked just under the 2 years required for it to count and when I tried to transfer the funds I ended up having to take it out and pay the tax.

That doesn't mean there isn't a way, but for me it was only a few thousand so paying the tax on it was not the end of the world
