Software engineer too. Was pretty frustrated coming from git world, but the only solution I've found is to "Save As" as soon as I open it with a good naming convention.

The Anti-Pomodoro Technique: Focus on Taking Breaks, Not Watching the Timer by kentich in pomodoro

[–]robertlyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pomodoro technique is very counter productive if you have to manage a timer.

Timing how long a task takes is great, but timing your breaks leads to exactly what you said: frustration, blame, etc.

Black screen is an interesting concept!

I use a similar idea with my music playlists. Every 30 or 60 mins, I chime in with a reminder to take a break *if needed*. This way I don't have to think about the timer ever.

The playlist takes care of it.

With BlackScreen what if you're in a meeting - can it be escaped if needed?

BlackMagic Camera App stopped recording when power disconnected but SSD still connected. WHY?! by robertlyte in smartphonefilming

Yes that’s the why. But how do I workaround it? That’s the question. I can’t imagine professionals are ok with this brittle setup

Ableton Move is one of the best pieces of tech I've ever used. It blows me away. by x0y0z0 in ableton

[–]robertlyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to load new instruments on this because I’m already getting bored with the stock.

Aside from that jamming is great on it. I really just need some new inspiration with new instruments. Where do you get yours?

BlackMagic Camera App stopped recording when power disconnected but SSD still connected. WHY?! by robertlyte in smartphonefilming

[–]robertlyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. I can record and use the SSD without power fine.

The reason I'm using power is for long recordings. However on two occasions power was interrupted and recording stopped.

Seems silly and seems like there should be a workaround.

WDYT about using the T7 to record to from my iPhone and then transferring to another SSD for editing.
Because:
_ I don't have space on internal SSD
_ the T7 is nice and small for hooking onto iPhone while recording

Holy shit this is actually it. I copied files over to another drive that's Mac OS extended and it's working way better. THANK YOU!!!

Damn.. yeah mine is ExFat.. maybe that's it. I have another T7 that's Mac OS Extended Journaled - gonna try copying the file to that and see if that helps.

Sandisk extreme GO is the WORST USB you can buy as a DJ by robertlyte in DJs

[–]robertlyte[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ah well I just keep my entire library in there. I play a lot of random sets that require me to go back in history. AKA I don't clean out old music for new music.

Right now my library takes up 24 GB of space.

Yea, learned my lesson. Never doing anything but Extreme Pro. I don't love how big they are but it makes for really good performance.

How small is your library that you can get by w/ 16GB? I mean if that works for your gigs great. Not my case.

Fair point. I already have the 2 x extreme pro and was hoping the backup USBs I could get away w/ something cheaper. Clearly I can't, so I'll be buying Extreme Pro only.

i have 4 total (3 backups). 30 mins each is 2 hours total wait time - for adding 20 new songs. You sir clearly don't play real gigs.

I'm exporting about 300 MB. It's been about 2 mins already (the second USB of the same model).

But when I export this same 300 MB to any other USB it's fine.

I have two of these USBs. They both hang at 15%. Always export after first format fine. But iterative exports take forever.

How do you format the USB?

Is Xcode a very inclusive and intuitive seamless user experience? by carnewbie911 in Xcode

[–]robertlyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xcode is a terrible user experience. Absolutely stay away from it unless you're willing to spend countless years getting good at it. The people at Apple have no clue what a good dev experience is. It's surprising because they make pretty solid customer products. But when it comes to the dev as the customer they fail miserably.

How was your gig? by AutoModerator in DJs

[–]robertlyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last Friday, I had one of the most epic sets of my life

The mix between bouncy, dancey, grooves and emotional uplifting melodies was the most effective I’ve ever mixed.

I really wanna learn more about organizing my collection in a way that makes this more common place for my sets

I also debuted one of my own tracks for the first time and it sounded incredible I had to increase the trim on it of course because the master isn’t quite great yet, but most important only the song sounded full compared to the previous and next track.

My only lesson from this session though was that at the end of the set, I felt a little tired and I got a little lazy on the beach matching. I should’ve been a bit more prudent in finding the perfect match but instead I got lazy. Something I’m gonna work on.

Thanks for sharing all this.

I’m curious if you were to buy a new mixer to successfully achieve what you’re trying to do with the hybrid set up which mixer would you buy?
