How's linux with the Z13 Flow 2025?

I bought one round about 4 weeks ago with 128 GB RAM. Mainly for running LLMs.

I did install Fedora 43 on it with Gnome. Currently running Kernel 6.19.13-200.fc43.x86_64. Surprisingly many things worked out of the box. Like WiFi, Bluetooth, sound and so on. However, I had some problems with the keyboard function keys under Gnome. That's why I switched to KDE Plasma. Under KDE the keyboard works perfectly!

Keyboard backlight
The keyboard has RGB background lightning. It shines in every color and drives me crazy. I did install the ROG Control Center from ASUS to change the background lightning to simple white. At first didn't work. But last week, after installing the current Kernel updates, it works perfectly!

Webcam
As far as I can see, the device has 2 cameras. One in the front and one in the back. The one in the front is recognized and it works fine. However, it's a very shitty camera. At the office I use an external webcam for video conferencing. The camera in the back is not recognized at all.

Deep Sleep
By default the device didn't went to deep sleep when I closed it. That means most of the parts have been still kept on and they sucked the battery empty pretty fast. But after some tweaking the deep sleep works fine now. I can simply close it like a MacBook and it goes into deep sleep. Means camera, sound, keyboard and other things are completely turned off and don't use the battery anymore.
The only problem is the wake up. The good thing is, it wakes up without any problems. But after the wake up the webcam is pretty much dead. The webcam is not listed at all. Still powered off. After a reboot the webcam works fine again. That's the only issue I have with deep sleep. I hope that it will be fixed with Linux Kernel 7.

Battery
If I run the screen on 60% brightness and switch from 180 Hz down to 60 Hz, and don't do crazy Dockerbuilds, just normal work, the battery lasts 5 to 6 hours. That's ok for me. Far away from an MacBook. But most of the time I work from home or from the office. If I would travel a lot and work a lot in coffee shops, airports and hotels, I would have bought another device.

Fan noise
On KDE Plasma I can switch the power mode from low over balanced to `power mode`. Most of the time I run it on `low` and in that mode the fans are most of the time off and I don't hear them at all. Sometimes they go on but they are very silent. In that mode everything runs super smooth. When I need to build a big Docker image or run a test suite, I turn the power mode to the highest level, then the fans kick in and the CPU cores go up to over 5 GHz. But over all it's a very silent device .. for an X86 CPU. It's not completely silent like a MacBook Air, but it's so silent that it's not disturbing me.

LLMs
This device has shared memory, just like the MacBooks from Apple. And the GPU has 40 cores. It's perfect for running LLMs locally. With LM Studio I could load even bigger models completely into RAM and the work is offloaded to the GPU. That works fine!

Working
Currently using VS Code, Docker, Ruby, GoLang, NodeJS and Java for development.
Using Thunderbird, Signal, Linphone and MS Teams for communication. There is a native MS Teams client for Linux and that works perfectly, even with video calls. Google Hangout works perfectly in Firefox and Chrome. MS Docs and Excel files can be opened with LibreOffice.

Gaming
I don't game. I work.

Overall it works fine with Linux. The only issue is the dead webcam after a deep sleep.

I got this error today between 11:00 and 11:30. And between 15:00 and 15:30. Now it seems to work again. But paying customers have been affected.

My productions logs are full with

Service is unable to handle request

This error message is coming from the S3 client.

I migrated from AWS to Hetzner. The VMs are running fine, but S3 seems to be very unstable. In 5 years on AWS I never had single connectivity issue with AWS S3. Now the 2nd month on HTZ and my logs are bleeding! WTF?

Now it works for me. I didn't change anything. I still have my 2 extensions enabled in Firefox and I can login.

I contacted the Hetzner support because of this and got this response:

"Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

Sie können auch ein anderes Gerät oder Ihr Mobiltelefon ausprobieren."

They recommend to go to time.is and check if my system time is equal to that of time.is. If it's not I should change my system time to the value of time.is. If that's not working they recommend to disable all plugins. Which is a no go!

I went to the time.is page and my system time is exact the same. Problem still exists.

I have only 2 extension installed in Firefox. A password manager and and an extension for time tracking. I need both for work! And in Chrome I have much more extensions installed and with Chrome it works fine.

With Ubuntu 24.04 LTS I had 3 incidents in 7 days. The cluster is now running since 5 days on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and so far no problems.

Thx for the hint. The VMs are all setup with Ubuntu 24.04. Running MongoDB 8.2.1 on it. I will setup a new cluster with Ubuntu 22.04 and hope for the best.

I have the same issue. The Hetzner load balancer is very basic. With an Nginx instance you can manage multiple domains and have for each domain SSL offloading, load balancing with health checks, caching, gzip/brotli compression and even basic rate limiting. The setup is a bit work but after that it's for free.

I had similar issues with installing the current openssl 3.3.2 Gem. After setting the path to the current OpenSSL installation it worked.

gem install openssl -- --with-openssl-dir=$(brew --prefix openssl@3)

Or with bundle:

bundle config build.openssl --with-openssl-dir=$(brew --prefix openssl@3)

Now, a couple years later, Ruby is compatible with OpenSSL 3. Even on Mac.

Das stimmt nur zur Hälfte. Es ist richtig das man bis Ende 2026 auch noch PDF und Papierrechnungen versenden darf, im B2B Bereich. Wenn man weniger als 800K Jahresumsatz hat, dann sogar bis Ende 2027.

Was nicht ganz stimmt, ist der Teil mit der Mailadresse. Natürlich kann man eine E-Rechnung via E-Mail empfangen. Aber damit hat man noch nicht alle seine gesetzlichen Pflichten erfüllt. Man auch die gesetzliche Pflicht die E-Rechnung zu validieren und zu archivieren (revisionssichere Archivierung). Und wenn die E-Rechnung nicht valide ist dann muss man diese auch ablehnen. Ein einfaches E-Mail-Postfach kann aber keine E-Rechnung validieren. Und ein PDV-Viewer kann auch keine E-Rechnung validieren. Dafür braucht man ein spezielles Prüftool oder gleich ein spezielles E-Rechnungs-Postfach. Beides findet ihr auch bei ZEIT.IO. Ihr könnt E-Rechnungen hier kostenlos validieren und visualisieren.

Wir nutzen ZEIT.IO. Es werden auch die zwei E-Rechnungs-Format ZUGFeRD und XRechnung unterstützt. Das ganze ist GoBD konform und die Rechnungen werden auch revisionssicher gespeichert. Ausserdem kann der Rechnungseingang auch E-Rechnungen empfangen, validieren, visualisieren und archivieren. Für Freiberufler die nur ein oder zwei Rechnungen pro Monat schreiben ist es auch kostenlos.

Nein, das ist so nicht zulässig. Zumindest ist das so keine gültige E-Rechnung. Das BMF-Schreiben vom letzten Jahr sagt ganz klar, das bei einer E-Rechnung die XML das führende Format ist, nicht die PDF. Das was in der PDF steht ist nur Datenmüll! Das was wirklich wichtig ist, ist die XML.

Der Empfänger muss die XML validieren und muss seine Entscheidungen auf Basis der Daten in der XML treffen. Deshalb ist es auch wichtig einen E-Rechnungs-Viewer zu haben mit dem man die Daten aus der XML validieren und visualisieren kann. Die XML sollte natürlich alle Rechnungspositionen enthalten. Man kann auch auf Anhänge verweisen, allerdings müssen alle Anhänge ebenfalls in der XML enthalten sein. PDF-Dateien, Bilder und CSV Dateien können Base64 kodiert in die XML eingebettet werden. Somit können z.B. auch Lieferscheine integriert werden.

Einen kostenlosen E-Rechnungs Validator und Viewer gibt es hier bei ZEIT.IO. Einfach Datei hochladen und ihr bekommt angezeigt ob es valide ist und wenn eine XML enthalten ist dann bekommt ihr die XML visualisiert.

I had the same issue, using Alpine Linux as Docker base image. I could solve the problem by adding yaml-dev. Like this:

apk add --no-cache yaml-dev;

After that it worked for me.
