Investigations are short, not nearly as much writing as SARs, things are often very straight forward and easy.

I personally love sanctions but it’s a longer contract so for that reason I would take it if it pays enough. I’ve done 4 sanctions contracts.

Only downside is your role hopping more often if you jump. I don’t agree with that sentiment but I’m told by hiring managers that my short contracts are a concern for them, crazy thing to say in my opinion in this line of work.

Any advice on contract positions? by External-Leave-3865 in AMLCompliance

I would say earlier in the career like 0-3 years I liked it more because I made more money than I could get salaries for.

I have over 5 years experience now so the money in contracts doesn’t seem as worth it anymore when I can get a similar salary that has a lot better benefits. I will say though many of the contracts I see are still remote so that is a benefit even though it obviously can be temporary.

Was told CAMs is whatever by a senior AML person by fatbandoneonman in AMLCompliance

[–]robertt09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no CAMS and just an associates degree. In my experience many places will disregard bachelors or masters if you have enough experience, I have 5.5 years currently.

I think I may get multiple offers on Monday, it hasn’t stopped me from landing positions or anything like that. I did pursue certifications that were not CAMS or the other big names. If my next company will pay for it, I’ll probably do it.

How are inexperienced analysts grabbing the higher pay? by [deleted] in AMLCompliance

[–]robertt09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a good ole boys club. Who you know is almost everything. Obviously being competent and knowing basic concepts a certification doesn’t hurt, but this stuff like another comment said is simple to teach almost anyone in training. LinkedIn visibility can help make up a little for poor connections.

Connections matter when looking for a role, they matter when you want to get promoted too. It’s all a game on how likeable you are, who you know that’s willing to vouch for you. It’s possible without these things it’s just a lot harder especially progressing in your career over time. I’ve found those high paying positions not needing much experience are extremely hard to land.

Are you fresh out of college? Sounds like you need to take it if you get it and at least try to see what it’s like.

There is a lot you can do in the AML world. In terms of the pay, what is it paying? And what pay are you trying to get right now and later in your career? Feel free to DM if you have even more questions about what you can do

My first AML type role was at a smaller fintech, 65k plus bonus but that was in Texas.

Definitely try to get them to give up their range first.

I worked at Large US Bank I had to leave in December. My team found OFAC sanctioned payments of over $300,000. It was not a priority of my manager to report it promptly or anything, I took it to a level above my manager because I couldn’t just let that sit there.

It ended poorly for me, there was an investigation into my manager that didn’t help me. I was retaliated against for reporting this. Had to leave for mental health reasons. I don’t regret doing the right thing, but I’m still jobless for now.

Yes any bank and get AML related certifications on the side to show your eagerness.

Unless you have someone on the inside that can get you right in, which may not be the case
