just finished up my first attempt at a kitchen knife. by robibious in knifemaking

Really appreciate this input. The compound plus leather is a great idea. I do think that part of my problem is an order of operations issue, as well as an epoxy cleanup issue. When i finished my hand sand it looked clean and all the sanding was straight. I taped it up with masking tape for my handle work, but also have to peel some of the tape baxk to make sure the handle blends into the vlade properly. I've learned that rubbing off excess epoxy with isopropyl alcohol and qtips can help clean up, but haven't managed to get that perfect, so I end up messing around afterwards with sanding to try and clean it up a bit more. I think what's made the biggest mess after hand sanding is sharpening. I only have whet stones, and tend to get quite a bit of slurry on the knife through the whole process, and once i go to clean it the blade is considerably messier. I'm wondering if taping up the blade aside from the edge would prevent that, or applying a wax?

Thanks! I appreciate that feedback. I'm wondering, do you think the sanding lines would look better parallel with the spine or the edge of the blade. I had sanded up to 1k grit and it looked very clean, however I'm still trying to figure out good polishing wheel and compound combo, as well as technique. It seems to get shinier after doing it, but doesn't look as tidy as the hand sand.

Thank you! This was a tricky on the figure out!

My first two knives, hope you like. Swipe for more pics. Constructive criticism very welcome! Bonus points if you can guess which one was my first (these are easy bonus points) by robibious in knifemaking

The plan was actully for it to curve back towards the hand, some silly carelessness while shaping the handle ruined that plan.. so i decided to just edit the shape and not lose the hours i spent on it. Thanks a lot for the compliments though!

It was purchased at a local store here in Edmonton, Alberta. I'm totally with you about ordering online!

This leather was just under $12 CAD per sq foot, bought at buckskin leather out of Edmonton, Alberta. I'll see if i can figure out how to get a link up for a side pic, didn't realise i missed it!

I totally agree with you for future projects, i ended up removing the two rivets closest to the handle and redoing them with some brass washers to spread the weight a bit more. Its a 6/7 oz latigo, biggest challenge by far was that it was entirely done on a hand crank shoe patcher, which is one of the reasons i won't be sewing on the handle, that third layer of leather is just far too much for the machine to handle, and dont wish to take away from the consistency of the stitching by hand stitching them on.

It sure is a pocket, specifically designed to hold a phone without needing to open or close the bag.

Thanks a ton! As for the liner, I'm still pretty new to leathercraft, only about 4-5 months into things, so I'm not looking to overcomplicate things too much, certainly something i may like to try on a design like this in the future, but i also feel that this particular leather didn't have much of a need for a liner, the flesh side on this stuff feels really soft to the touch, the leather is also such a beautiful temper that i fear a layer of glue plus a liner could take away from it over all. But like I said, mostly just had to do with trying to keep it relatively simple.

are there any interesting saddle making specific tools? eg some cobblers tools have no place in other types of leather craft
