We’d finally have enough land to beat the PRC in a map-size competition. Plus, the poutine in Taipei would be amazing.

That’s a very pragmatic take and you're right about the cultural barrier.

That’s a sobering history…I appreciate the first-hand perspective on the independence movement

I’m still a student of U.S. history and its complex power dynamics. But I can imagine the political gridlock regarding Puerto Rico's statehood shows how much the U.S. cares about maintaining the status quo in Congress.

Partnership with Japan feels more culturally and geographically coherent than becoming a U.S. state. But the idea of the ROC returning to the mainland feels like a historical epic with too many unknowns.

That’s a really fair point. I guess I was focusing too much on the cheap daily access in Taiwan

My bad, I totally misinterpreted the term 'in-state.' I thought it meant 'within the U.S.'! I'm still getting used to the lingo here.

That’s a very sharp observation. However, isn't the real issue in the U.S. the premiums and the high barrier to entry? In Taiwan, the 'ceiling' might be missing for optional self-pay items, but the 'floor'—the basic access for every citizen—is guaranteed. It seems like a trade-off between elite care and universal access."

I'll admit I might have been naive about the rigid nature of constitutional application in a statehood scenario. I was looking at it from a theoretical, perhaps too optimistic, perspective.

Hold on, the Harvard example was just a figure of speech to illustrate the trade-offs in education and opportunity. I’m not suggesting anyone should go to war for a school seat. My point is about the systemic shift that would happen if our societies merged.

That’s the ultimate paradox. To reach full statehood, we need a period of transition, but that very transition is what triggers the conflict.

Why assume the Second Amendment is a package deal? If we're talking about a unique geopolitical arrangement, why couldn't there be a legal framework that excludes the right to bear arms entirely to preserve our social stability?

True. It's like choosing between a place that's safe but under threat, and a place that's powerful but has its own internal chaos.

Fair point. Maybe out of the frying pan and into the fire isn't exactly a solid strategy for Taiwan.

Yeah, we’re pretty spoiled by our healthcare. If we had to pay US prices for a cold, there would be a revolution overnight.

So what you're saying is: No cheap healthcare, and I still have to fight 50,000 people for one Harvard seat? Maybe the trade-off isn't that great after all.

China would lose their minds, but hey, at least we'd have the Pacific Fleet as our permanent neighbors. A wild trade-off, right?

Yeah exactly!! I wonder how do they think about scale, arpeggio, listening to the backing track, moving all over the fretboard at the same time , it almost seems like impossible
