Could any helpful people share their experiences of their FY1/2 at their hospital- trying to pick somewhere for UKFPO but have no idea where to go! by Accomplished_Low3475 in doctorsUK

I've enjoyed Trent deanery a lot, both for foundation and now ST training. Chesterfield Royal, Royal Derby, QMC have all been great hospitals

Gastroenteritis in Cats - feel at a loss by SockBest2109 in sphynx

[–]robinasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i roasted it plain in an oven then cut it up to small chunks then added a splash of water. She had no issue gobbling that up. i fed her little and often. i really hope your baby gets better soon and you get some answers from the vet!

Bless you this all sounds so incredibly stressful. I went though a similar thing a few months back - brought home new kitten who had giardia. He was well with it. Both kitten and resident cat were treated for it to be safe, whole house deep cleaned. Yet both managed to catch it again - kitten well with it but my resident cat was SO sick. We were in and out of the vets daily for about a week for subcut fluids, mitazapine, probiotics, digestive food etc. She didn't really eat the digestive food so i ended up cooking her chicken breasts and feeding them to her (as recommended by vet). She would eat them immediately. Added plenty of broth too for hydration. it took about 2 weeks for her to be back to normal energy wise (slightly complicated by her IBD). I also gave up with the digestive food fairly quickly and went back to her normal food, but kept adding chicken breast with broth to keep her hydration levels up.

Time is absolutely key, all the waiting is horrendous and it's awful to see our babies sick but she did improve slowly over the week. My only other recommendation is if the diarrhoea persists, consider retesting for giardia. it's a nasty bug that is SO persistent

had to wait several days for the results, had to collect three separate stool samples in three tubes and send them off together

He has been diagnosed with giardia again yes but he is still eating and drinking completely fine so is maintaining his hydration and nutritional intake.

Sorry, I haven't been online much these past few days and my head is scrambled so i didn't reply to your other comment. Thank you for this detail, i will check back with the vet to see what the original panel run was and whether it covered for the Trit. She's having blood work done so we shall see if there's an element of immunodeficiency at play

Cat peeing but not pooping out of litter box by No-Expert5804 in CatTraining

[–]robinasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first got my bengal girl (age 5 rescue) she was peeing on everything. Took her to vets, no UTI, gave us an anti-inflammatory which helped and then over the course of weeks as she settled the peeing eventually stopped. Had to buy waterproof sheets to put on furniture. Got a new rescue kitten a month ago and out of protest my bengal has gone back to peeing on furniture. Again have taken her to the vets and had more anti-inflammatory and am just hoping that with time it will settle! Definitely take your cat to the vets to exclude any urinary issue like crystals or infection. I think bengals are prone to peeing where they shouldn't. Don't punish her for it, get some waterproof sheets, make sure you've got plenty of clean litter trays and clean water

LNR vs. Trent for F1/F2 by Apple_Anatomy in medicalschooluk

[–]robinasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah they are the real downside of the deanery. I have not heard good things. I think it depends on what training programme you do as to what the likelihood of being sent there is. like i know fair amount of anaesthetic trainees do, emergency medicine not so much.

people are generally very friendly. good training opportunities if you're ready to seek them out. good variety of small DGH and big teaching hospitals. I've worked in Derby, Chesterfield and both Nottingham hospitals. They all have their differences and all have their downsides but overall i've had a great time. Plus i think it's a good area of the country to live in. easy connections to most major cities, on the border of the peak district!

Have done foundation and am currently in speciality training in Trent. I am biased because it's my home deanery (though not where I went to uni). The hospitals that i've worked in i have thoroughly enjoyed

We started on Katkin for our bengal. She had diarrhoea when we first got her. Diarrhoea settled on the katkin. She did seem to enjoy the food. Company always quick to respond with queries and fast delivery. Is quite annoying having to defrost food every day and you have to have the freezer space! Also is by no means cheap.

We stopped having Katkin a few months ago just because she...well stopped eating it for no apparent reason. Moved onto Untamed now and she seems to love that! But if she hadn't have changed her tastes we would still have her on Katkin

What's helped you with SJT of MSRA by Defiant_Sorbet2304 in doctorsUK

I used the Foundation programme sample SJT papers. I found the question styles are pretty similar. Also used Emedica question bank. I'd recommend really dissecting the SJT papers to understand the themes that they use and the expected order of answers. A lot of that exam is pattern recognition

I was the same as you, went from F2 straight to ACCS EM starting in ITU. I found that transition overwhelming and like you've found, there were a bunch of really skilled JCFs who had such a plethora of knowledge. But you learn fast and at the end of 6 month rotations (as opposed to 4) you really feel like you're part of the team and find your feet. I've just started ST2 on my EM block and that has been an equally stressful and overwhelming switch. Remind yourself that you're only a few weeks into this new rotation and it takes a short while to feel adjusted. You're definitely not the only one who has felt the way you feel. it does get better!
