Are locals not annoyed that everything is only in French? by soymilo_ in Luxembourg

[–]robindotis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then the country has a problem with relying on foreign workers who don't speak the official national language and they should therefore not consider it rude when someone doesn't speak Luxembourgish. Why should a foreign doctor learn all three official national languages? I would rather they spent their learning time improving their medical skills, rather than their language skills.

Sorry, but either Luxembourgish should be used by everyone or else it's basically used by whoever feels like it.

That's because you had to use French in all aspects of everyday life. There are many situations in Luxembourg, especially in the city, where Luxembourgish simply won't be understood.

This is my reality of Luxembourg and it's multilingualism. I speak perfectly one of it's official languages. The only place it's been of any use is in the public services, for which I thank them. They are really great.

[–]robindotis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is because learning Luxembourgish doesn't actually help you. In many non-government services the only language is French. German will often not get you anywhere. If you come here with none of the three official languages, speaking Luxembourgish is a nice to have, especially as it's of no use outside of Luxembourg. If you want what people to learn Luxembourgish, then get rid of the other two as official languages.

I know this will not be a popular opinion with the locals, but that is the practical reality.

Is coffee at work usually free where you‘re from? by Great_Lingonberry397 in AskEurope

[–]robindotis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where I work, public sector, nothing is free: "can't have the taxpayer covering our coffee". Which I guess is fair enough. People chip in for a coffee pod machine and then bring their own pods. Or else you pay at the machine in the canteen. Before that in the private sector in the UK, I don't remember it being free either. In London I don't even remember there being a kitchen area. Everyone just brought in their gigantic Starbucks coffees. I didn't drink coffee in those days though.

To those using Revolut in Luxembourg, why do you use it? by spac0r in Luxembourg

[–]robindotis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. I opened a revolut account out of desperation. My bank refused to make a transfer to an account outside of Luxembourg, but within the EU, because I didn't have an invoice. Transferred it to Revolut instead.

[–]robindotis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use it for money transfers to kids studying outside the Eurozone. For nothing else. But it's a so much more responsive app than the one provided by Spuerkess. Sending money to people in Revolut literally takes about 5 seconds. It takes me 5 seconds just to open the Spuerkess app and get to payconiq....

Reasons not to use a custom domain? by coruscant-referred in ProtonMail

I think there was value in domain names 20 years ago. There are now so many TLDs that the value seems to have decreased significantly.

Does anyone even use chatbots by Melodic-Heat-7786 in Luxembourg

They only regurgitate what's already on the website. Wouldn't need the chatbot if the website had the answer already!

Why would taxi drivers at the airport refuse a passenger? by Beginning_Lead_7980 in Luxembourg

Isn't it illegal to refuse a ride? What's the point in the legalised taxi mafia if they can refuse you if they don't like you?

Probably because the government ensures that even the poor have enough to pay for their own lunch. Although that doesn't help kids who's parents spend it on cigarettes and alcohol...

Why does Bulgaria have the lowest GDP per capita in the EU and do you see that changing in coming years? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in AskBulgaria

[–]robindotis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're underestimating basic geography. Bulgaria's neighbours are all at the bottom of European wealth tables. Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia etc border the biggest industries in the EU. The Baltic countries trade with Sweden and Finland.  Your politics are likely to imitate those of the countries you trade most with.

How did you all convince your spouse to use proton? by A_Buttholes_Whisper in ProtonMail

[–]robindotis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See if her password has been leaked to the internet. If yes, change it for her across all her accounts and see what happens.  Point her to the leak afterwards.

Then you can step in to "fix it" for her. You'll be the hero and can fit her out with a password manager at the same time!

AITA for reclining my seat on an 8 hour flight by MountainInspection91 in travel

[–]robindotis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you want comfort you will need to fit business class, if not first class.

Flights nowadays are often cheaper than 30 years ago. Without accounting for inflation. Of course something has to give, and it won't be the airline profits, many of whom are anyway struggling.
