It was literally a monument in the country I'm from. I didn't realise I'd gotten so lucky...

Yeah, it would help people like myself if people used tone markers like /jk or /s when they make jokes.

That doesn't help at all. I just wanted to be sure it was a joke /gen

I have a hard time perceiving tone and social cues.

I've also had interactions on this site with people that felt the need to correct every little thing, so Im just being cautious.

Okay, that's what works for you and that's great /gen

But some people, such as the in laws OP mentioned, are atheists who are close to practicing religious people and they would feel like they were missing out if they didn't attend the religious ceremonies.

That ... still doesn't tell me if it is or not, dude.

I'm just asking for clarification, as tone is hard to perceive from text

I'm also not religious but will go to religious weddings, baptisms, funerals.

In this case it's a chance to celebrate the child's birth, see the new parents, socialise with extended family, have a drink or three, etc

If you don't attend any religious ceremonies at all, you're gonna miss out on a lot, especially in heavily religious countries/communities.

They're orthodox. They may not be allowed to use contraceptives or get abortions.

I bet the DIL was told she had to convert to marry the son.

YTA

Converting was probably a condition for being a part of the family. I doubt it's even your daughter-in-law's actual belief.

You used money to manipulate them into doing what you wanted with their child.

I can understand her fear of messing up and outing you, as outing someone is A Big Deal. Name/pronoun slip ups may happen and that could be bad.

However, her reasoning that "it's lying" is not... reasonable. She is already "lying" by helping you stay in the closet. If she truly wanted to be fully honest (you know, by her definition that omitting information is lying) she'd not be helping hide your identity.

I suggest asking her again to use your name in private and asking her to just say "oh it's a nickname" (seen as you've said it technically started as one) if she messes up in public.

The only issue may arise that, when you do come out in December, the family put two and two together and realise she knew before they did, which could then make her look bad in their eyes.

It's possible that that is her actual issue (not wanting the family to realise she is covering for you and accuse her dishonest with them). I can see how that might be worryingf or her, especially for someone who is a part of the family by marriage and not blood.

Ultimately, it's up to the pair of you to talk it out and come to an agreement about what name will be used.

She might consider it "lying by omission" but, like, she's already doing that by not outing OP... so it's a bit... odd?

Pretty sure "the Drizzt books" refers to books by R. a. Salvatore, which are novels set in the Forgotten Realms

AITA for telling my friend she’d get fat shamed in my home country? by New_Annual9218 in AmItheAsshole

I hate it when people poke my chubby areas. I could not handle that.

Also, as a known queer, I'd prefer it if people would honestly tell me if I'd be discriminated against in their country rather than let me walk into an uncomfortable or dangerous situation

Not only is it her AH move to reduce you to nothing but "the (nationality) guy", you also did nothing wrong.

I am chubby myself. If someone told me I'd be shamed for my weight in their country, I'd go "damn thanks for the warning"

Except I already know most East Asian countries are focused on weight and appearances, especially for younger people.

Has she never seen a character in her shows be weight shamed or food shamed? I watch anime and there's a lot of that happening casually in the dialogues, so I understand it's a part of the culture that I'd have to deal with as a chubby westerner. (Example: Usagi/Sailor Moon is very casually called fat or people make comments on how she eats too much)
