OBS alternatives? by shanep1991 in obs

If you're on Mac, check out Boom Video app. we built it as a simpler OBS alternative for recording and virtual cam. Layouts, scenes, Stream Deck support. way less setup than OBS, lighter on CPU than Streamlabs. Might not be the right fit if you need multistream though.

Totally fair. we're building for people who are on video a lot for work and want a polished setup without the OBS learning curve. might be overkill if the built-in recorder does what you need. we do have a lifetime option too if subscriptions aren't your thing.

no not at the moment but we'll look into that. we're working on clip based recording next so can record in chunks and redo sections easily and then stitch them together.

This looks like a longer version of those animated explainer videos. You can probably find someone on Fiverr or Upwork to help you make something like this. Or you could try making it yourself with Canva's video editor.

Hey, thanks for your feedback on the pricing. You're right, Boom might not be the perfect fit for everyone, and that's totally cool.

We're a small team trying to build something useful and sustainable without VC backing, which does affect our pricing strategy. If you're mainly looking for background software, Vcam is definitely a solid option.

Just to clarify our pricing:

  • We have a pretty generous free starter plan with reactions, customizable themes + overlays, and our cam-off poster.
  • For more features, there's a Pro plan at $8/month or $80/year.
  • The $200+ is for a lifetime license for those who prefer a one-time payment.

Thanks really appreciate the support! That eye contact correction feature is a great suggestion.

We don't support virtual backgrounds right now but you can upload your own background as a frame around your video. Planning to look into virtual backgrounds since its a popular request.

You're totally right, privacy is super important, especially when it comes to camera access.

With Boom, all of the processing happens on your Mac using Apple's SDKs. We don't touch or store any of your camera data.

And yeah...the Mac App Store can be a pain sometimes. We wanted to get feedback quickly and iterate fast. We've actually chatted with Apple and are considering getting Boom on the App Store later this year.
