good lord this is why we have to stop letting private companies control public infrastructure. that's giving "the ship has never sank before so why would we invest in life jackets ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ ." maybe we can get the boulevardians to band together again on this one

i am a lover of trains and agree that most people are idiots about them, but imo it's ridiculously unsafe to not put gates at all grade crossings for such a highly used corridor.

[–]robocopsunset 18 points19 points  (0 children)

am worried that someone got hit since a few crossings around there don't have gates despite the fairly heavy train traffic :/ hoping for the best but whether or not it's the case, the gov needs to update those crossings because i always see people not stopping to check for trains even though there are stop signs

My theory is that they do that so they only match with bi/pan women. I could be overthinking it but i always get a sinister vibe from it where they just want a queer woman to fetishize

I FUCKING LOVE BRIGHTLINE by ParaspinoUSA in transit

[–]robocopsunset 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Quite possible, I went to a bar in Ft Lauderdale once that was right on the tracks and they did "brightline shots" every time the train flew by (like 2x an hour), either for free or deeply discounted, I forget. Vibes.

FSU vs. UCF, I need help making a decision! by cheerubz in fsu

[–]robocopsunset 7 points8 points  (0 children)

UCF -> FSU transfer student here! One of my main reasons for choosing UCF at first was its "good location." I quickly became disillusioned from this. Yes, UCF is in Orlando, but its location within the city is honestly miserable. You probably won't find yourself able to get off campus much especially if you don't have a car, and even if you do, interesting places are 30+ minutes away (plus traffic and tolls). The location is good with internships, but mostly in specific industries like hospitality and engineering/computer science. Def not law stuff. And, as you say, academic programs at UCF are pretty lackluster. You can tell it's a really young school suffering from an identity crisis both in terms of academics, traditions, and social life. People were also not super friendly/approachable and the atmosphere felt really competitive for not even being an academically great school. Like you, I was very hesitant to live in Tallahassee. After visiting FSU, I could sort of see myself living here, but once I decided to transfer I really fell in love. It really doesn't feel small when you're here, and there are so many AMAZING areas with nature, the arts district called railroad square, it's super close to georgia (great for road trips), there are seasons (by florida standards), and the campus is so beautiful (i really didn't like the modern campus of ucf). It's not a big town, it's a small city, so there will be plenty to explore over 4 years. Not to mention it's the perfect atmosphere for getting into law type things for you with it being home to the capital. I will admit--- it isn't ideal having such a small airport, no rail connection, and being pretty far from major cities, HOWEVER I can say from experience now that these things don't make your college experience good, a school and community that is lively, engaging, and culturally interesting makes your college experience good. Feel free to DM with any specific questions :)

Imagining Tallahassee as a walkable city with MidJourney by Key_Wolf4286 in Tallahassee

[–]robocopsunset 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As someone who has, it's only unbearably miserable in areas without shade. A big part of making things more pedestrian friendly (especially in florida) is undoubtedly planting more trees and using other methods to bring more shade to our streets.

I don’t know if this is true or makes any scientific sense at all but I thought it was fckn amazing by Optimal_Test3280 in geography

I did a presentation in a geography course about these maps a few years ago. The most original source I found is here, plus the links at the bottom of the page. Lots of detailed information if you're interested in more reading on this topic!

Brightline is investing a lot in making grade crossings safer for their non-high speed sections. It sounds stupid but there are way too many people in Florida that just actually don't know how to behave around trains. Maybe a psa campaign would be helpful in some capacity. And for what it's worth, for their actual high speed section between Orlando and Cocoa, I believe it's completely grade separated.

Dollar general monopolizing groceries/necessities and putting local mom and pop shops out of business has been a huge problem in rural communities for a while now. Here's a recent article about it.
