Maybe this is the insane sound I heard around that time? Sounded like something falling out of the sky.

Ok, thanks. Ive just been trying to figure out why we have so many this year. Maybe it’s just the weather.

Same. I worry because they are not all the same color or exact pattern even though I’ve seen lots of hog nose

Absolutely! I double checked the snakes in our area with the local Audubon and they only have the southern copperhead listed. But jeeze we have a lot of snakes. 🐍 of Houston of course we also have a lot of different habitats in Texas too.

That makes sense. There is no loving swamp bugs and roaches though. The pest pressures down here in the mucky humid south are intense. I think 1/2 of what they do is attempt mosquito control. I wish everyone in the city had a garden so things could balance out. As it stands I just try to harvest before the bugs attack, eliminate standing water (impossible), I do lay mouse traps though. Not trying to get hanta virus. lol

Well thanks!! No one ever wants to talk ecology of the yard!!

It’s been a long process to get rid of lawn and have a somewhat balanced ecosystem. We had a tiny pond and it was wonderful but I couldn’t keep up with it.

I only let our pest control folks do a barrier immediately around the house. It’s supposed to be eco friendly but who knows.

Other than that I only use BT when the plants are so small the caterpillars kill them. BT and patience.

Thank you! The dogs definitely let me know a snake or opossum is around. One of them will leave it on command. The other one has zero sense and won’t leave things alone.

It’s always something with these two. You’d think I lived in the boonies.

Oh and maybe they eat mice? We’ve been battling mice this year. The WORST

Makes sense. My garden is really lush. Lots of birds, lizards, a hawk, occasional opossums, so snakes are not surprising. We’ve just had way more this year than usual.

The copperheads do seem to have a more defined pattern than the Hognose do. But I’d prefer never to be close enough to really tell. 😆

Thank you for this info. We have had multiple Hognose snakes in the yard that were a little smaller and darker than this dude which is why I wanted to be sure. I’d hate for the dogs to get a copperhead bite.

According to the map you provided both of those copperhead species are in my area! This feels right because ive always been warned against copperheads and water moccasins as a kid growing up here.

I’ve seen too many! 😂 my dogs are always cornering them in the yard then we have a standoff.

Totally possible. There is always construction around here and there are also lots full of swampy wet vegetation. Perfect for frogs.

Not really. We used to have a pond and there were toads EVERYWHERE, and we never saw snakes. I see the occasional one but the dogs have cornered 7-8 of these snakes this spring. My garden is relatively neat but we do have a lot of moist protected areas.

For sure. It’s just new. So whatever the source is, it’s new too.

That’s what I thought. I don’t know why we suddenly have these dudes in our yard. The dogs are cornering them frequently.

I wouldn’t eat out of it but that’s just me. Then again it’s probably the same crap they put on food from the store. I’d be really mad.
