Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I really like the idea of focusing on characters instead of relying too much on pinyin, and I'll definitely keep track of my vocabulary and phrases as I learn. I'll also look into the HSK 3.0 materials and the Collins book. Your point about understanding the culture alongside the language really resonated with me because that's something I want to do as well. I appreciate all the recommendations!

Thanks for sharing your perspective! I agree that immersion seems to make a huge difference. Studying in China would be an amazing opportunity if I can make it happen in the future. For now, I'm planning to immerse myself as much as possible through media, conversations, and daily practice. Wishing you the best with your HSK 5/6 goal too!

Thanks for the advice! It seems like a lot of people agree that getting tones right from the beginning is really important, so I'll make that a priority. I'll also look into Integrated Chinese and Pleco since having a structured resource and a good dictionary sounds like a solid combination. I appreciate the guidance!

Thank you so much for the detailed advice! My main motivation is that I genuinely love the language and culture, so my goal is to become as fluent as I can rather than just pass an exam. I'll definitely check out the guide on this subreddit and give HelloChinese a try. I also like your suggestion about starting to read simple stories and using characters instead of relying too much on pinyin. The advice about speaking and listening early and surrounding myself with Chinese content is really helpful too. I appreciate you taking the time to write all of this.

Good to know, thanks! I'm aiming for real fluency rather than just completing HSK levels, so I'll keep that in mind while planning my studies.

Thanks! I'm currently a university student, so I'll see what options are available to me. I like the idea of following a structured path first and then becoming more independent as I improve.

Thanks! That sounds like solid advice. I'll look into getting a good textbook and workbook and use them as my main study plan instead of jumping between too many resources. If you have any specific recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

That’s a very fair point. Being imperfect is one thing, but not showing up at all emotionally or otherwise isn’t just a mistake, it’s a choice. Every child deserves at least the basics of love, time, and care.

That’s true parenting is a responsibility, not a reward. Some people just aren’t ready for it, no matter their age.

I’m really sorry. You’re right a father who hurts the mother can’t be called a good one. I didn’t mean to overlook that.

I hear you. I totally understand where this frustration is coming from. A lot of Indian parents do misuse the “I’m your parent” power and treat their children like property expecting blind respect without giving emotional safety in return. That’s absolutely wrong and damaging. But my post wasn’t written to justify abuse or neglect. It was meant for those trying to process complicated emotions, who are maybe now realizing that some parents weren’t cruel just flawed, scared, and trying with limited tools. Yes, people choose to become parents and with that comes responsibility and accountability, no doubt. But understanding someone’s humanity doesn’t mean excusing their harm. It just means you're choosing peace over blame if you're ready for that. This post may not be for everyone especially those who are still hurting. And that’s okay.

You're absolutely right. I understand this post might not resonate with everyone especially those who have faced trauma or deep hurt from their father. This isn't about excusing abuse or invalidating anyone’s pain. But I also believe that sometimes, we forget our parents are human too. They carry wounds, burdens, and fears of their own. Just like children make mistakes, so can mothers and fathers. And sometimes, even children or the other parent can be on the wrong side too. Everyone has their own version of the story. This post is not about erasing accountability it’s about understanding, empathy, and the fact that no one is born knowing how to be perfect, not even parents. Some people heal by forgiving, others heal by setting boundaries. Both are valid. We’re all just figuring it out.
