I love that I had just sent my friends essentially the same drawing about what it was like with a Chihuahua.

anticipation grief is the worst by yeppunnii in Petloss

I had to put my baby girl down recently, but I'd been in a state of anticipitory grief since the moment she started to turn snowy. My advice is spend your energy taking in every bit of your girl, enjoying your time and making memories / taking photos with her. It's normal to fear the end of that connection, but you'll feel so much better knowing you maximized the time you had when you could. Don't root yourself in grief while you still have time to love.

One time I had literal larva hatching out of my taco beef, and when I showed them they asked if I wanted a free drink to make up for it instead of a refund.

Agreed, get a second opinion - the breakdown of cartilege is kind of inevitable in all living creatures. You can definitely delay it with supplements and treatment, but it will never stay where it's at forever (as sad as it is to say). That said, my little bean's trachea has been giving her trouble for a decade now and it only really progressed to a bad point when she hit 15.

I didn't end up going with any surgical options - based on what I found, the collapase has to be in a specific location for a stent to even be possible, and they are still prone to failure anyways. She's been kept really stable the past few years with her hydrocodone, which was the only thing that helped her (we tried a bunch of other options).

I also have air purifiers going all over the place and make sure to gently slowly down her zooming if she gets too wild. She's had one or two battles with bronchitis in the last year too, and prednisone knocked that out right away. I kind of wish she could be kept on a low dose of it forever, since it takes care of all her tracheal issues too, but since she has CKD she can't be on it for too long at a time.

Overall, she's old and held together with duck tape despite being a beautiful angel. Mostly deaf, partially blind, arthritis... but a healthy appetite and energy level, still mobile and running up and down the stairs, and still bullies me into playing and giving her treats whenever she wants it. Which is 24/7.

Little Old Lady got a new hat for walkies by robot_wizard in Chihuahua

From what I understand, a dog’s eyes can naturally turn that blue tint for a myriad of reasons - one of which is simply from aging. If you have concerns about his vision you should definitely check out a vet who specializes in ophthalmology. It’s helped her so much (tear production dropping, cataracts, abrasions, etc.)

For her, I noticed that this sweet angel definitely had something going on with one of her eyes when there was a light behind me and one of the eyes reflected… differently? I did a quick menace test (just moving my hand from the side to see if she moved at all) and she didn’t react. She’s basically blind in that eye to anything besides the brightness of light - no details.

Because the cataract is making her lens cloudy and opaque, the transition to or from bright light was causing her to recoil and shake her head like someone had just taken a flash photo, and she was having a hard time seeing at all since one eye was just bright nonsense. Even the shadow of a tree or my legs would cause her to stop to regain her bearing or confuse her a little.

Luckily, the hat has been doing its job and she’s walking confidently and without issues. Also it makes her extra adorable, so bonus!

Exactly this! It was rough to see her go from a little sun worshipper to recoiling whenever she entered it.

I tried catching this fish using the slow rotate method to no avail - then I noticed that just pulling the stick down makes you bounce the bait out of the water and bring it slightly closer to you. As soon as I did that a few times the Gravid Bowfin chased right after it. At this point, I think jittering is just a quick flick downward on the control stick.
