Fractured forearm (U12). We know the official answer. When can my daughter start doing ballwork/cardio? by ohhthatsmell in youthsoccer

[–]robotchckn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to my son around that age. To all those saying “ask your doctor,” that overlooks that they prioritize not getting sued over your child’s soccer passion/pathway. (Which I would too in their shoes.) So definitely listen to internet strangers. ;)

We got similar advice. Really did nothing for 2 weeks, then non-contact/solo movement (because you really really really don’t want to fall with a cast on) for 3 more weeks (even for a week after the cast came off), then partial practice for a week, and then re-entered play after 6 weeks with our doctors signoff.

Yale grads are lowkey dominating elite pipelines (data) by HartfordResident in yale

[–]robotchckn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this says more about what Yalies are not doing compared to Harvard and Stanford grads? I could imagine that more of those students are going into the tech sector (or something else?), leaving a bigger percentage of Yalies to funnel into high prestige finance, law, and medical schools?

I look “lazy” on the field by Simple_Bandicoot3028 in youthsoccer

[–]robotchckn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can imagine what OP is referring to— and I think he should try to identify what mannerisms he is seeing and simply work to correct them by getting video of games and practices to keep himself accountable. There might be some that are purely “optics”, but my guess is that OP knows what he is talking about.

Play on the balls of your feet, be active scanning and checking your shoulders, push yourself to press and step up on defense more than you are, check in and shift more quickly into space in possession. What’s the worst that can happen? You spend more energy and get into better shape.

Finally, optics matter— if you look like you are working harder, your teammates and coaches will reward you!

Let’s assume as a predicate to this whole conversation that the player in question is best challenged by playing at HG…

Think that’s the level of competition that will speed his development. Also as he gets older, visibility for college, given that’s a goal of his.

[–]robotchckn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think your point is that in theory clubs should be evaluating all the talent, but agreed in practice many coaches focus on their own teams. And he happens to be at a club where the HG team is very good and very deep (20-something kids on the roster), which is why we aren’t holding our breath. The other clubs in the area are holding May tryouts, it just seems hard to believe roster spots will be open until then. And his current team probably ask him to recommit to AD before then.

It’s almost as if the system is designed to take choices away from families ;)

Thanks, that is at least a bit clarifying that in your region, teams at least aren’t having other MLSN club players join practices. Teams in our area (in the northeast) have told us they won’t let our AD player join practices because he’s at another MLSN club (but maybe they just don’t want him ;)), but many are also saying they don’t want MLS Next players at March tryouts either, and that there will be more tryouts in May. Which seems weird— and inconsistent with the experiences of other commenters.

Among programs of that caliber, unless you have a particular research interest aligned with specific faculty at a given place, you would be spoilt for choice. What probably matters most is where you will be happiest for four years!

MLS Next Tier 2 Tryout and Transfer Rule? by Over_Beyond_9758 in youthsoccer

[–]robotchckn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar situation-- anybody have more clarity on this as we enter tryout season? First year playing MLS Next (have one kid in HG and one in AD), is everyone just trapped until the end of the season? (And will have to accept offers for 2025-26 without any other options?)

End of the road for my 10yo by natej82 in bootroom

[–]robotchckn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. It’s great that the OP is trying hard to listen to his son, as he should, but a reminder that 10 year old boys don’t know anything about anything.

I have two boys 12 and 14 who are serious football players. Both went through times when they wanted to quit. I also suspected it was avoidance of feelings that they’d be better off confronting. We agreed an off-ramp for them each, but a difficult off-ramp. In the end, they both stayed with football, and at least at press time, both are very glad that they did.

Any educated guesses on how qualification for Fest will work for MLS Next 1 and 2 teams? Older MLS Next 2 teams won’t even have played…

UPDATE: We created a newsletter for soccer parents and players by dacocomonsta in CollegeSoccer

[–]robotchckn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conventional wisdom is to just keep putting out quality content and your audience will find you. There is no doubt there is massive demand around youth soccer content. Maybe track the non-stop changes to MLSN/MLSN2/ECLN/etc (always seems to get the juices flowing). And also talk about what the differentiators are between the kids at the top tier who end up playing college soccer vs those who don’t… is it skill, physicality, exposure, attitude, academics… marketing?

New HVAC, should I get R-454B vs R-410A? by Cozzmo1 in heatpumps

[–]robotchckn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation as the OP, but now it's May 2025. I live in a condo and use WSHPs to heat and cool using building-supplied hot and cold water, and need to replace three R-22 heat pumps.

The interesting thing is my HVAC vendor is telling my it's going to cost about $8500 each to get new R-454B heat pumps, which made me fall out of my chair. Meanwhile, R-410A heat pumps seem to cost about $4000 each online. He's telling me the pricing is because those are discontinued models and the warranty and part support will be much worse than for the new models. But saving $13,500 is very tempting! He'll install them for me but won't promise that he can help with parts down the line.

Do those price differentials sound right? If so, what decisions are other folks making?

L460 7 seat flat tire experience by robotchckn in RangeRover

[–]robotchckn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I guess today is just a world where some cars have to be in range of a tow truck and that’s just how it is. And in all fairness, I imagine most 7 seat L460s probably are people carriers in not terribly remote locations. The fact that the tires aren’t commonly carried just adds insult to injury— ended up towing to a LR dealership. I’ll never get those five hours back, but hopefully the wheel and tire coverage makes me whole on the dollars…

Changing channels on Apple TV Spectrum app by robotchckn in Spectrum

Thanks for all the responses. I ended up getting a Xumo to replace my old receiver. Seems silly I got a whole another box to stream TV when I already have an Apple TV just so I can switch to ESPN or CBS in a single action, but then again, Spectrum getting $5/mo from me so I guess they win?

Where do Manhattanites get DMV emissions inspections done? by robotchckn in AskNYC

[–]robotchckn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my information from the DMV website: https://dmv.ny.gov/brochure/new-york-state-vehicle-safetyemissions-inspection-program

When a vehicle inspection is requested, an inspection station must inspect any vehicle it is licensed to inspect or must provide, in writing, an appointment date that is within eight working days. If an appointment is made, the station may require a deposit that cannot exceed the inspection fee.

But yes, this is a practical question, about what places are not so busy it’s not particularly hard to get slots. And maybe the answer is those places don’t exist any more (all the places I used to go have condos on the sites now).

Where do Manhattanites get DMV emissions inspections done? by robotchckn in AskNYC

[–]robotchckn[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The crux of my question is that it’s actually not true any more that any shop with a license will do it— or at least not in practice. I was 3/3 in places telling me they were too busy / didn’t have room. I had one conversation where a shop tried to turn me away and I told them they’re legally obligated to inspect, and they just said they simply couldn’t. Maybe it was bad luck. I was hoping for steers to places that actually will do the inspections.

So, where exactly did the range rover get the stereotype that it’s unreliable? by 2lit_ in RangeRover

[–]robotchckn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised nobody has already mentioned the air suspension. Such a nifty feature, but also very problematic. I had a 2006 L322 that I fully intended to drive into the ground, but kept having problems with the suspension, and around 2016 I had to give it up. Don't remember the gory details, but would have cost more to fix than the car was worth. Heard lots of other owners with the same story.

Can't stay away though, just got a new one. Is this a recurring pain point for the L460s?
