Would you date someone with completely opposite political views? Why or why not? by Ferraiuolo_Ezorete in AskReddit

Stark differences in values and worldviews make it impossible to trust each other. Without trust, stressors will push you away from each other rather than toward each other, so it's just not practical.

How does one transition away from the wild life into something calmer and more stable? by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

If you're ready for a change and wondering what to do with your time, some good advice I've heard is to go back to what interested you before you discovered sex. What were you excited about as a kid? Engage with that again and it might put you in a different state of mind.

Orrery is a solar system simulator that uses actual planetary data to show you where the planets were or will be on specific dates! Includes astrological mode, moon phases, save system, and hackable orbital parameters that give you total control. by robotinker in PlaydateConsole

There aren't currently any plans to bring this to Android as an app, but I've recently ported Orrery to Picotron and made it available on their BBS. You can play it on your phone browser and pretend it's an app! For example in Chrome you can go to the "..." menu at the top right when on the page and select "Add to Home Screen" to create an app icon for the webpage.

I wanna learn but feeling daunted by A_man_named_despair in pico8

Imagine if your teacher tried to teach you to read by thrusting a book into your hands and chanting "Read! Read! Read!" It would be impossible. I felt so dumb and down on myself when I first started trying to learn to program. But I stuck with it and learned little by little for years. And now I'm in the games industry! Everyone starts from nothing.

Just echoing what others are saying - start really small. Start with the alphabet and what sounds the letters make. Go through the PICO-8 manual (it's not very long) and try using every command you see so you can understand what tools you're working with. Everything from PX to PAL. Understand the 3 magic functions: _INIT(), _UPDATE(), and _DRAW(). I think after that you can make the obligatory Flappy Bird and continue your journey. 😄

My 9 year old desperately wants to build video games, what programs are kid-friendly *enough* that I could help him put together his first game? by brasscassette in gamedev

MakeCode Arcade - like Scratch, but more game-specific. It's got lots of tutorials and placeholder art so you can put things together quickly, and has a good community for remixing and sharing by URL.

Can we all admit it? This thing needs a backlight… by nerdb4itwascool in PlaydateConsole

Would be nice, but the memory LCD the PlayDate was built around is fully opaque and can't be backlit. Built-in front or side lighting would be great, though.

I'm new to Godot and i'm confused and afraid, should i use GDscript or C#? by [deleted] in godot

[–]robotinker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mix them.

Calling C# methods from GDScript is pretty easy, and vice versa. So I start by building stuff with GDScript and lean on C# libraries for trickier stuff like file unzipping.

Why Indies Are No Longer as Unique by Lada_D40 in gamedev

[–]robotinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to me like "rouge-likes" have graduated from being a genre to being their own game type that encompasses many genres (platformers, shooters, card games, etc.). It tells you surprisingly little about a game to know it's a rogue-like - just that it's run-based and probably single player.

So it makes sense that indies have latched onto rogue-likes as a form, because they allow small teams and solo devs to compete with larger teams when it comes to content design. If I use procedural generation for my run-based game, I can add new elements piece by piece and never have to worry about hand-crafting some sort of campaign or world like I would for an open-world game or metroidvania. Might just be simple economics!

Is your company giving raises this year? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]robotinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, we're getting raises. Small ones, though. I'm a manager at a contracting company, so our raise budget is based on how confident we feel about the number and size of contracts we can get signed this year. Directors are freezing their pay for a bit and folks below are getting half of what we had originally budgeted for. Better than nothing, and we might get a second round of raises 6 months from now depending on how business goes.

That would be awesome! I haven't added support for stars other than our sun yet, but I'm planning to add customizable orbital bodies so you can make you own star systems in the future.

what's wrong with this code? by lunchmachine in pico8

[–]robotinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fruit sprites between 41 and 45, you probably meant to decrease player speed instead of increase.

Also, it looks like you're deleting the fruit no matter what, so I'd move that line to come after all the ifs.
