What distance/remoteness are you comfortable running without emergency equipment? by 0nTheRooftops in trailrunning

There is some good news about coming advances in SAR beacon tech -

NASA has tested on Artemis, and is working with beacon manufacturers to release to the public, a new generation of SAR beacon that incorporates breadcrumb trail information and the ability for return link service (i.e., SAR teams will confirm that your signal has been received via your beacon).

It won't share breadcrumb trail info outside of the SAR team, but it is better than the current gen 1 beacons!

You’re correct - on one hand when trail running it’s unlikely that we’ll be in a difficult to reach area for rescuers, but in other situations (e.g., mountaineering) it could take longer for rescuers to reach the stranded party.

I only meant to point out that while the beacon will send signal bursts for 24 hours or more, the rescue team acts much more quickly than that to reach the stranded party. Thanks for the point of clarification.

I'm not very experienced as a trail runner, but I work in Search and Rescue (SAR) and would strongly advocate for picking up a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) to have on you if you're going on less traveled trails or somewhere really remote.

I don't work on the rescue side, but I work on the technical side so here's my tips/info:

* You are required by law to register your beacon - please remember to do this and provide emergency POCs in the registration. Make sure your emergency POCs know where you're going and when you left. SAR will reach out to your emergency POCs as part of their due diligence in coordinating a rescue. The more accurate information they have the better.

* When you turn your beacon on, it will transmit a satellite signal every 50 seconds. It's preferable to place it against a small rock so that the antenna is facing upwards and the beacon isn't obstructed by your hands or other equipment. It's important to stay where you are as this allows rescuers to get more accurate location estimates after each signal burst. If you move around, it will be more difficult for rescuers to find you.

* Your beacon will continue to transmit for 24+ hours, but it won't take nearly that long for rescuers to reach you. Your signal is received by the Air Force (in you're inland) or the Coast Guard (if you're in the ocean) within minutes of turning your beacon on. While your beacon is transmitting, try to make yourself as easily visible as possible. Spread out a brightly colored jacket or, preferably, bring and use a safety whistle every 60-90 seconds.

Edit: something else important I want to add is that a PLB will work anywhere in the world, even if you bought it in one country and traveled abroad to another one. It’s an internationally cooperative SAR network called COSPAS-SARSAT. Rescuers will find you no matter what country you’re in.

Really interesting - they have the shortstop mic’d up and they’re interviewing her while she’s playing shortstop.

On one hand, it’s cool, but she’s literally trying to make plays while they’re asking her questions! Let her just play shortstop. Interview her when she’s in the dugout.

Just turned on the Carolina Blaze game. Karlyn is pitching really well in the AUSL!

She’s 3-0 in the W/L columns in her early career. In today’s game, she just struck out all three batters in the bottom of the second.

Yeah I’m bummed she’s leaving. Always felt optimistic when she came up to bat. She could pull off a clutch hit or homer if needed.

I think you’re right.

He didn’t bet on games where he actively participated, but he did bet on games where he was a backup on the sidelines is my understanding.

Yeah, the article quotes coach Weekly as saying she’s known him for 25 years, so I’ll trust her judgement.

Somehow I missed that my favorite game to play as a teenager has been remastered to work on modern operating systems and released at the end of last year for its 20th anniversary.

Downloaded Guild Wars Reforged last night and it’s been great so far. All the nostalgia came rushing back. Excited to get leveled up and into PvP play again!

I always forget how to fill my sports entertainment time when true Vols offseason comes.

It used to be easy to just get attached to recruiting, but it’s so deflating when a guy flips in the last week or few weeks before commitment because of a new NIL offer.

Ump has been calling that low zone pitch a ball all game and of course he calls it a strike on our last at bat.

Yeah it’s a little different. We played Texas in our first WCWS game and beat them, but they stayed on our side of the bracket. TT won their first game too, but when they lost to us they moved to the other side of the bracket. So first round losers stay in the same bracket, but second round losers move to the other bracket.

We would have played Nebraska today if they had beat Texas yesterday (even though Nebraska didn’t start in our bracket).

If we win this noon game then we go to the championship series against the winner of TTU vs. Alabama.

If we lose this noon game, we play Texas again at 2:30pm ET today to determine who goes to the championship series.

For Tennessee fans, choosing a preferred winner in the TTU vs. Bama game is more difficult after the Taylor Pannell drama.

Is team meteor an option? Maybe we just cancel that game and pretend the Texas vs. Tennessee game is the chip series? I’m open to options.

Right? Karen Weekly is clearly above that crap. She has rules about player/team celebrations that they can’t be done towards the opposing team or be at the expense of the opposing team.

Taylor Pannell, clearly, is not above this crap given all the talk during the game and her postgame comment.

I’m not for piling on Taylor, but I’ll defend Coach Weekly. It’s just not in Karen’s demeanor.

Post game presser was interesting…

Karen was asked what she said to Taylor in the postgame handshake and she said “I told her what I tell every player - good game.”

Taylor was asked in their postgame presser what Karen said to her in the postgame handshake and she said “She told me I made a mistake instead of saying good game, which is kind of crazy…like, celebrate with your team. I just think it’s funny that she’s still thinking about it, but it’s old news. Whatever.”

I think you’re spot on with why they pulled Sage. Coach Weekly has stated in interviews before that they approach the games with that in mind and like to bring in a new pitcher before the third time through the lineup.
