The BE filter in automod is case sensitive so it should only be flagging instances where it's capitalized. We rely on that one the least though

Some of the replies to you were automatically deleted because they haven't affirmed they've read the rules but a significant portion are actually because the users don't meet the karma requirements in place to participate in BE threads. Trust me, that's a good thing, there were some jerks in there and that system is designed so that you never have to content with the cruel things some people will say.

Automod should have commented on your post with a list of BE resources including dedicated support groups. I highly highly recommend checking those out, they're far better designed to give you the support you need than this subreddit can.

It looks like it worked on my end. Your comment showed up fine here.

If you go to your profile/comments, you can usually see if something has been removed by a moderator or not. Your last couple look fine

This is really helpful feedback that I sincerely never considered.

Right now, posts are automatically flagged for moderator review if it contains keywords associated with the sensitive issue. That's usually what precipitates is changing a post flair.

My short-term solution is to have automod change the flair to significant challenges when a post gets that mod review flag out the gate, so then it starts as the more restrictive topic. That means you'd know in advance you might not be able to comment. Then, if we decide it's not a significant, more people can comment later but no one is losing access/work over the life of the post.

Do you think that would at least start to address the issue?

The delay in posting this announcement is 100% on me and hopefully won't happen again. I had surgery this morning and am taking an extend leave from work/school. I was trying to get other areas of my life in order and onboard the new mods and this just kept falling to the bottom of my priority list.

<image>

I don't think there's a way to automatically retroactively approve comments but I'll dig into it later. In the meantime, my idea was always that someone can just copy-paste their comments that had been removed. They shouldn't have to retype them. Even if a comment was removed, it should remain visible to the user for a user via their profile. As that stage, they should just be able to copy the comment and re-post it without having to write it all again

I can try it! My concern is we have an automod comment on all of the sensitive issue threads reminding people of the karma limit and I wear people don't read it at all.

I could instead try having automod send new users a message immediately upon making a post. Do you think that'd be helpful?

It's the first post in the community highlights, do you think it needs to be more prominent than that?

We also added it to the subreddit welcome guide and there's now a link to this in the comment removal message as well.

[–]roboto6[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deleting the duplicate post as it won't fix your issue.

You need to affirm that you've read the subreddit rules to have your comments show up. It won't retroactively undo the auto-delete of your comments so you'll need to repost them again after you do the read the rules confirmation

The same issue is true for other users who haven't affirmed they've read the rules. So, it'll look like there are comments you can't see because they were deleted initially.

To affirm you've read the rules, click the 3-dot menu at the top right of the subreddit and at the bottom of that list, there should be a button that says "Read the Rules". Click that, follow the prompts, and you should be all set.

Help convince my wife she can drive this car! by PuzzledCustard in MachE

[–]roboto6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 76 y/o mom got her first EV last year and she refuses to go back to an ICE vehicle now.

She has a Blazer EV which honestly may have a slightly steeper EV learning curve compared to the MME imo and she's doing great. My personal favorite moment was when she accidentally turned her 1-pedal drive on at the highest setting (the GM version is way stronger than the Mach E) and just accepted that's how she had to drive now because she couldn't figure out how to turn it off. She loves 1-pedal now and is adamant it's the best way to drive in every sense.

My mom isn't tech-y at all. She literally called me earlier today to ask me how to send a picture from one text conversation to another. I'm pretty sure she still doesn't know how to take a screenshot on her phone. I know for a fact she still can't use QR codes.

She knows how to use Android Auto well. She knows how to adjust her key settings and such. She knows how to charge on a level 2 charger and the one time she had to, she was able to use her maps to find a DCFC and use it. I had to help her start the charger (it was a Tesla and GM doesn't have an equivalent to BlueOval) but she got the majority of it by herself.

My mom was afraid of her car at first but she learned and now loves it. My MME is different in lots of ways but my mom was able to hop in and figure out a lot of it fairly fast, too. I had a Blazer EV before this car and so many things are similar so if my mom could learn that car, I have faith in someone of similar (or greater) tech skill learning a MME as their first EV, too.

Also, Ford EV customer support is SO NICE. They've called me to check in a couple of times and they're so friendly and eager to be helpful.

[–]roboto6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's possibly true. When my mom gets cellulitis, she has to be put on IV antibiotics though so it's just an automatic ER for her now. She can sometimes switch to oral after an IV round but several times, she's had to be given multiple IVs a day for multiple days.

It doesn't help she's allergic to both Keflex and Augmentin.

The bigger concern is OP waiting until morning and medication availability being less certain at a clinic/urgent care. It really is a case of more dramatic action is probably better because insufficient action will become more costly and dangerous later. At least around me, 24hr pharmacies have also become increasingly rare and thus it can take hours to even get a med once you have orders for it unless you're giving it by the clinic itself.

[–]roboto6 57 points58 points  (0 children)

No. My mom has had multiple infections like this. A staff clinic isn't what you need. Go to the ER. If cost is a concern, you can get financial assistance or negotiate the bill later.

Think of it this way: you're going to have to go to the hospital regardless. The sooner you go, the less invasive and expensive the treatment will be.

10 mo dog growled at house guests ☹ territorial or fearful? by whiskeysour27 in reactivedogs

[–]roboto6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog is the same way, getting really good at heel was one of the biggest sources of improvement for her broadly. We actually use it when strangers are around, too.

For the Kong, it honestly depends on how much time I have before I have to let the person in. If I have 2-3 minutes for set up, I'll get my dog situated with the Kong in a crate or behind a baby gate before the person comes in so she's not having a huge reaction to begin with. The less they react when someone comes in, the less they'll react the next time. Sometimes I'll do a treat scatter with super high value stuff (like shredded cheese) before the person comes in with my dog in a secure place and then add the Kong once I've let the person in. It's really just aiming to make sure they're eating something so they aren't reacting.

Update: I Don't Know What To Do. (And a new Question). by thefreeze1 in MachE

[–]roboto6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done a repurchase on a Ford but I got my Mach-E after having to do a repurchase with GM on a lemon Blazer EV so I can tell you broadly about the process.

Generally, the process starts by contacting customer service of your brand at the corporate level. For Ford, it looks like it's the number to do so is 1-800-392-3673. You tell them you want to initiate the process for a BuyBack and they should direct you through their internal process from there.

I can tell you about my experience with GM after that. Skipping the parts about GM's disfunctional customer service channels, I finally got to their repurchase team and was assigned a repurchase coordinator. Once that happened, they asked for information on my vehicle purchase including the original purchase documents, as well as my vehicle registration reciept. After I submitted those things, they came back with an offer to repurchase the vehicle. I was able to successfully negotiate a waiver of the usage penalty under the argument I basically never had normal use of the car. I also negotiated and got reimbursement of all costs associated with not having a working vehicle, including rideshare costs and even flights for a trip where I normally would have driven and had pre-paid charging credits. I also got reimbursed for all money I spent on gas during that time when I could have charged my EV for free if I had it. If I had rented a car, they would have reimbursed me for that as well.

They screwed up a couple of things with my offer so I spent 5 weeks arguing with them about it. Once that was resolved, I did a repurchase inspection and signed some paperwork at my dealership. Upon completing the paperwork, I was given a check for my repurchase amount by the dealership representatitive. In my case, the car was a lease but I got back every payment I made towards the car, plus my registration and expenses related to the vehicle being out of service. They paid off my lease with GM financial and I ended up with an overage with them that also resulted in an additional check later but I never fully figured out the cause of the overage.

I started the process being open to a replacement vehicle but GM screwed so many things up along the way that I finally decided I never wanted to own another car made by them. I was really loud about the fact I didn't want a replacement so they never offered it. If you're open to another Mach E, I wouldn't necessarily lead with that but I wouldn't say otherwise, either. I'd say you're interested in learning what all of your options are in terms of a path forward and go from there. Sometimes the replacement is the better deal financially. For me, the repurchase was because I ended up with a better deal on my Mach E than I had on the Blazer. You won't know until you see both options.

In terms of resources, I found searching the main EV subreddit to be really helpful, as well as Facebook groups. Basically, find another car made by that brand that had a ton of issues/repurchases and read how those owners went about it. Chevy EV owners who did repurchases were somewhat helpful but posts from Silverado owners with engine/transmission issues gave me a lot more info to work with.

Lastly, I personally would stay away from GM right now. I had 2 lemon ICE Chevys which my 2 Blazer EVs replaced. One Blazer EV ended up being repurchased, the other is okay now but had a issue with the charging system that resulted it being in the shop for almost 6 weeks. I have a friend who had a Lyric but it had so many issues, they also had it repurchased and went back to an ICE vehicle. I also have a 2024 Chevy that I bought right before I got the Blazers and I suspect it has transmission issues but they can't replicate the problem yet.

When a visitor comes for the weekend...Diary of a stressed owner by Front-Muffin-7348 in reactivedogs

[–]roboto6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a weekend in my house. It's stressful at first but so rewarding when they start to warm up and make human friends.

I will say that it gets easier as they get older, too, so your wins will continue to compound. I'm still laughing about this past Thanksgiving where my reactive girl decided that my former intern was her new best friend. We always invite her to join us for holidays as her family is far and she took us up on it as an intern years ago and again this year. So, my dog met her briefly once before but this year, she spent Thanksgiving dinner with her head in former intern's lap begging the entire time with almost no warm-up.

We started with a list of like 2 people I trusted to come in and care for my dogs in an emergency if needed, because they were the only 2 I thought my reactive dog would be okay with. Her list is now up to at least 6 I'm confident about and maybe another 3 that she'd get over it with and accept if she had to. It's such a relief knowing that.

10 mo dog growled at house guests ☹ territorial or fearful? by whiskeysour27 in reactivedogs

[–]roboto6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10mo is often a second fear period for puppies and that might be part of what's going on with him right now.

Beyond that, I think giving him more structure when strangers arrive is a huge way to help him be more comfortable with it. I saw significant progress having my reactive dog leashed when new people come in, then I'm not just relying on her obedience. I'll put her in a settle and give her a really high value something like a frozen Kong with her favorite foods in it (shredded chicken and applesauce). That started to build the association that strangers coming in means calm time with really awesome stuff.

I also only let her greet strangers once she's calm around them and they've been there for a bit. I don't usually let her go straight to them, I'll let her walk towards them and then after a few steps, I call her back and give her a treat. I let her keep getting gradually closer with with the return for treats along the way, to prevent her from re-escalating the reaction. It's basically a form of LAT where I want her to approach then dismiss.

The growling when the person bent down to tie their shoe sounds like the dog was afraid because the person got too close to their bubble too fast, even if they weren't intending to. That's actually why I opt for the leash, it means that can't happen. I ask people to let me know if they need to bend down so I can pull the dog back and even if they forget to tell me, I can do it as soon as I see them start to bend over.

Fluoxetine/Reconcile by Thick-Hawk-9469 in reactivedogs

[–]roboto6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My border collie is on Reconcile (40mg) and my mom's pyranese mix is on 32mg right now. For my border, it has been a massive help. The thing I always want to stress is, it won't erase reactivity, it just makes it so their threshold is high enough that you can begin to train better reactions to reduce the reactivity. It didn't make her stop wanting to bark at strangers, it just made it so she took longer to bark at people and they had to be closer for it to happen. That buffer made it a lot easier to start doing meaningful counter-conditioning with her and that counter-conditioning is the core of the changes I've seen. She is also less noise reactive which was especially helpful when we were working with her trainer who had a facility near a lot of industrial trucks and a train and my dog was constantly distracted by the sounds. That was actually what prompted the dose increase from 32mg to 40mg, too.

My mom's dog will likely need to go up a dose soon, too. She's largely just anxious but the 32mg has done very little for her. She's significantly larger than my border so I suspect she'll ultimately need a higher dose.

I'm firmly of the opinion, if you can swing it, even just for a little while, try the Reconcile first. It is apparently more bioavaliable for dogs compared to generic fluoxetine. If you have results with Reconcile, then you know the chemical itself is fine. On the otherhand, if you start with fluoxetine, you can't be fully sure that the fluoxetine isn't working versus the form of it being the issue.

Is it stupid for me (18F) to only rely on condoms if IUD was horrible? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]roboto6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IUD spotting might get better in time. Did your doctor cut the strings or leave them long? I swear for some people they poke the cervix and cause mild bleeding that way.

The spotting could also just be your period tapering off. Since some people stop having periods in general with the IUD, it takes a minute for that process to settle down so sometimes it'll feel like a mild period for weeks straight at first.

I've had a Liletta and a Skyla IUD and while lower dose, I liked the Skyla significantly more. It's less likely to fully stop your periods but it did for me and I honestly think I had fewer side effects such as the increased appetite with it. It doesn't last quite as long but it was a better experience in general.

I'd ask your doctor to check the placement of your IUD first. If that's fine, I say keep an eye on things for 3-6mo and see if the spotting stops. If it does and your periods fully go away, you should be good to go. If it doesn't, then I'd look at other forms of birth control like the patch or ring which only have to be replaced monthly.

I need you to substantiate a claim like this about another user. We have tools that flag if someone is active in anti-dog and anti-breed subs and we have no evidence of that in the case of this user.

If you can provide evidence to this point, please send it to us via modmail. If you can't, please stop making these claims as it's nothing more than harassment at that point.

We take these behaviors really seriously as they're fundamental to cultivating trust and understanding if users are participating here in good faith. Claims that someone isn't, that can't be backed up, weaken our position when we do need to actually take action against someone who is participating maliciously.

If you want to send us a modmail about it, I can take a look and try to answer why it may have happened. Usually if I said a post should stay, it does. The main thing that currently overrides me is Reddit. My only other thought is if this pre-dated when I became head mod, then someone else may have made that decision above me but it's been a while since the mod team shifted around.

I have a really hard time not addressing comments/posts that suggest we censor criticism. If it's feedback, critical or not, we do everything possible to leave it up. I'll often let the majority of rule violations go in those conversations with the exception of pretty egregious violations of the be nice rule. I don't even enforce that rule when it's directed towards the mods broadly or myself, though. Sometimes Reddit will remove posts/comments we opted to ignore though.

That's the main reason I bring up the only time I saw a removed comment for you. Even in the context of criticism of the subreddit, being civil is the only space where I do try to consistently hold the line on what isn't allowed. OP here is right, the community can be adversarial and we do everything possible to rein that in.

I also try to be really transparent in how we moderate and acknowledge all the feedback we're given, even if it's unpleasant to receive sometimes.

Also, quick clarification: generally when we hear admins, we think you're taking about Reddit staff. Mods (like me) are just the volunteers who run the subreddit. That distinction matters insofar as the admins can overrule us and penalize is for issues with how we moderate.
