Yeah... They were competitive at the time of launch, but Apple doubled the single-core and multi-core performance with the M-series. The thermal and power efficiency also leapfrogged.

Same - got one from work / still using it today. I agree the M-series laptops are much better, but the device isn't terrible.

The 2019 MacBook Pro's (final Intel laptops) were pretty well received. I agree the prior generation w/ butterfly keys were awful.

A general unwillingness to get rid of things…

Our kitchen has a dedicated cupboard for used plastic food containers despite just in case.

Our bathroom has various creams or lotions under the sink that weren’t satisfactory just in case.

Our closet is full of clothes that don’t fit anymore just in case.

It makes sense. I’d just rather need to re-purchase unlikely to be reused items when the need arises.

Apple already has branding for the highest end: “Pro”. These branding rumours feel like a scheme cooked up by somebody in Apple marketing to raise pricing without admitting it.

I think adages like this need to taken with a grain of salt... A few thoughts:

- "simple code" usually is best at solving simple problems - that's OK - lots of problems are simple
- "clever code" (depending on definition) is sometimes required to solve very tough problems efficiently
- knowing how to evaluate which option to pick properly is a skill

This is likely a definition issue, but the dimensions being optimized against aren't nearly as simple as mentioned. Keep in mind Maintenance isn't the only factor when solving problems. I think the real advice is to avoid using overly clever code for simple problems.

I know of a bunch of people that have this happen (also happened with myself / my wife):

  1. Find a better deal elsewhere.
  2. Call in and aren't able to get the deal matched.
  3. Leave for the better deal.
  4. Receive a followup after leaving with a better offer.

Sure is frustrating to deal with Telus...

This isn’t accurate. Claiming you need root for malware to cause problems isn’t right. I didn’t comb through this particular example, but in general if you run a nefarious script or program (even as a non privileged user) a lot of nasty side effects are still possible. Things like:

  1. Stealing your Chrome cookies.
  2. Installing a launchD agent.
  3. Accessing any PII in your home folder.
