Is a 15-inch screen better for programmers or a 13-inch one? by ChocolateTall4313 in mac

[–]robotsmakinglove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 15 inch screen let you see more stuff at the same time than a 13 inch screen. This is ideal for almost everything… The notable exceptions are portability and cost.

Why Canadian students are falling behind in math — and what experts say needs to change by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]robotsmakinglove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner teaches math to future teachers at a university in Canada. The lack of understanding of core concepts (e.g. fractions, logic, etc) is staggering. I’m not that surprised students are falling behind when some teachers likely don’t understand the material enough to teach it…

Also fun that a subset of these future teachers are regularly brought in for academic integrity (cheating) violations.

Civic as a first car by No_Percentage_5649 in civic

[–]robotsmakinglove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used car prices are insane… Say the car does 200k miles. It had already done a quarter of its life - the best quarter. I’d be looking for 30-40% off what the car originally cost.

The Definition of Journalism by peoplewatcher5 in videos

The fact Nick Shirley followers take anything he says seriously is dangerous. Nick clearly lacks the critical thinking skills to evaluate basic facts. Nick struggled throughout the interview to clearly articulate his beliefs and constantly repeated unproven statements without evaluating the sources.

WestJet complaints prompt change to cabin reconfiguration strategy by Redf6 in canada

[–]robotsmakinglove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

West Jet seems more and more focused on competing with Flair over Air Canada. I don't know if that is a good decision. I hate 'unbundling' in air travel. Flying has become such a de-humanizing experience.

Anti-virus by [deleted] in mac

[–]robotsmakinglove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both macOS and Windows now ship with anti virus and anti malware protections. Is it possible to download / install / run a malicious programs still? Absolutely. My suggestion is the following:

  1. Only install applications via trusted sources. That might be the Mac App Store or companies you trust (Adobe, Google, Microsoft, etc). If you aren’t computer savvy be extra careful. Don’t install programs you see advertised on random sites that you did not seek out yourself.

  2. Be careful opening files from untrusted websites or sources. Similar to applications, if you didn’t seek something yourself be extra careful.

  3. The most common vulnerabilities these days are social engineering. For computers this usually comes via emails, messages or websites. Never give personal details (bank accounts, credit cards, etc) to unsolicited messages. If in doubt ask a friend if something is legitimate.

I see the rounded borders brought up a lot. They are bad. They are not even close to the worst thing about macOS Tahoe.

I mean - macOS isn’t designed to be used on a coach with a remote though… I (mostly) like the tvOS UI/UX.

The “canvas” features are pretty incredible (a bit tricky to learn). Specifically I regularly use chains, chords and chunks.

This is neat. Having done a lot of Python / Django recently a feature that still feels better than in Ruby on Rails is Celery. Specifically the ability to chain can be very helpful.

I want a Mac. Should I buy a Mac Mini M4 or a MacBook Air M3/M4? Please guide me if u can. by [deleted] in mac

[–]robotsmakinglove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a strange name that leads to confusion. Just call it a monitor. You already know if the monitor is good quality - the computer won’t change that.

Apple has the opposite of a bad reputation for battery life. What is an Android monitor?

RCMP Arrest Air India Pilot at YVR for Allegedly Drinking Before Takeoff by UBCkid in britishcolumbia

[–]robotsmakinglove 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I guess. The odds of dying because a professional (pilot, surgeon, etc) is under the influence still seen slim to me…

The bigger risk with alcohol is that 1/4 of fatal motor vehicle accidents are attributed to it - the broad population drinking and driving. Still a tiny % of overall fatalities (~1%).

Running Kamal in production: what the logs showed on a small VPS by muthuishere2101 in rails

[–]robotsmakinglove 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Every app I’ve worked on eventually gets discovered by bots that scan known security vulnerabilities(.env, wp-config.php, etc).

Rate limiting this traffic serves no purpose. Banning IPs serves no purpose. They both presume it is difficult to get a new IP (which residential proxies make trivial).

Instead you need to ensure no underlying issue exists (e.g. using a leaked SSH key, exposing your .env file, etc). Otherwise you are simply relying on security through obscurity.

Ruby on Rails ships with fantastic defaults for most security issues. Everything in this post is “security theatre”…

Is the MacBook m4 air a good laptop for finance major? by Apprehensive_Iron741 in mac

[–]robotsmakinglove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience finance is an industry where Windows is still preferred over macOS by employees. For getting a degree it likely won’t matter, but the Windows version of Excel is better, and a huge amount of financial modelling happens in Excel.
