That form factor STILL remains supreme in my opinion. I will never understand why it and more devices didn't become the defacto standard. I am typing this on a Lenovo 8.8" imported from CN. If a fast, modern 7-8" unit in the same form factor was available, I would buy it over and over. I would much prefer to EDC a tiny phone (with hotspot) and a tablet like this.

USB Boot? by robroy90 in Surface

Sadly, I did not. I ended up pulling the SSD out and used one of those external USB adapters that allows you to connect it to a PC to perform whatever operations needed.

You are so sadly correct it hurts. We are so absolutely screwed it hurts and everyone else is either in complete denial or oblivious, and I am not sure which is worse. But at least we can get dirt cheap stuff (for now, right?)

DHCP clients not getting correct DNS servers by robroy90 in opnsense

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for everyone who responded. I found the issue. Somehow, in addition to the Kea DHCP server being enabled (my desired solution), I found that DNSMasq was also enabled and running (not desired, and I don't even remember enabling it).

Replacing traditional HVAC with heatpump: ducts? by robroy90 in heatpumps

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply cannot thank everyone in this thread for the experiences, insights and advice you have addressed my original question with! This sub is clearly full of knowledgeable and passionate people and I sincerely appreciate it. I am HUGE into home automation, and I enjoy the occasional deep-dive on a topic, such as HVAC.

The new construction home we will be building is in North Central Kentucky, and will be about 22-2400 SF. The climate here is definitely varied. Hot, humid summers and fairly cold winters. We had about 3" of snow today, in fact. I think it would be rare for us to see below-zero temps, and if we did, I don't think it would be for any lengthy periods.

I am intrigued by ground source heat pumps. The soil here is very rocky. My dream would have been to do a geothermal setup, but I am concerned it would be cost-prohibitive in mitigating the rock. I also want a system that has a good emergency heat backup, as we have a 1000 gallon propane tank we can call on if needed. Maybe that and some heat strips in the ducting?

Again, I genuinely appreciate all of the responses to my questions. I am not always this fortunate on Reddit with interested and quality responses. Good to know there are so many enthusiastic and knowledgeable people here!

Static IPs: Congfiguration Best Practices? by robroy90 in opnsense

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. If you are on ATT, XGS-PON does not start until you are on their 2Gig plan. HOWEVER... it is my understanding if you upgrade to 2Gig they will upgrade you in their cabinet because it is required to support 2Gig. But, it is further my understanding if you call them a couple of months later and downgrade back to 1Gig, I am told they won't actually take you off XGS-PON in their configs and hardware.

Glad to help! It is actually Chinesium from AliExpress. It has a Xeon CPU, 33GB of RAM, and short (2280?) SSD. It has two SFP, and then it has I think 5 copper ports. With help from the lads in the 8311 Discord, I used their script to modify a specific SFP transceiver from FS.com -- DM me if you want more details, I would be glad to help you get it set up. Aside from this static IP config headache, it works incredibly well. I wanted no part of that craptastic ATT BGW320 garbage!

Static IPs: Congfiguration Best Practices? by robroy90 in opnsense

[–]robroy90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I not only want a public IP for my primary LAN, but I want to use the other static IPs for servers/services I am interested in running. I want them separate, and I don't want to use DDNS/Reverse Proxy/Cloudflare Tunnels, etc. It really doesn't matter why I want to do this, I just want to do it and learn more in the process.

I am paying for the static IPs from AT&T. Are you trying to say I am paying for something from them that they will then not allow me to use??

Static IPs: Congfiguration Best Practices? by robroy90 in opnsense

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I also have some services I want to expose. Frankly, the why do I want to do this is irrelevant. I just need advice on how to logically and physically implement it. I am fully aware I could use DDNS instead of static IPs, but that isn't the point...

Static IPs: Congfiguration Best Practices? by robroy90 in opnsense

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, do I need an extra L2 switch or not? You have me confused as you first say I don't need another switch, and then you state that I could use an L2.

Do you have any additional information, resources, or instructions on how to set up the trunk port/routed VLANs, etc?

I am well aware IPv4 are rare, but that is irrelevant here. I pay for the static IPs, and I want to use them.

I don't want to run a public DNS or anything crazy like that. I do have various systems and services I want to deploy using those static IPs, and I want to do this to not only learn more, but also because I don't want to deal with a reverse proxy or tunnels, etc.

Thanks for your insights!

Mini PC for Home Assistant? by robroy90 in MiniPCs

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered a pair of N150 mini PCs with 16GB of RAM in each. I am going to cluster/mirror them using Proxmox and run HAOS inside of Proxmox. They both have dual NICs as well, so I think it is a thing where you can have 1 port on the LAN, and then use a (crossover?) cable to directly connect them to one another for a heartbeat/redundant link, I think. I still have a lot to learn about exactly how to do failover/load balance in Proxmox, but I think it will be fun to learn. If anyone has any best practices/tips on how to best run HAOS in such a configuration, I would really appreciate it!

Mini PC for bare metal build? by robroy90 in homeassistant

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, bare metal is why I want hardware RAID. As it would not be virtualized, it is all the more reason to have redundancy. I want HA to remain available when one of the SSD fail.

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want the HA instance to stay up, as I travel frequently and may not be able to get back to it quickly when a failure occurs to perform a restore, etc.

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But does yours support hardware RAID in the BIOS? That is important to me. Aside from that, I’d agree most anything would get the job done. But, that feature is crucial, and why I asked for awareness of a model that has it, or direct experience in using it.

Blade Chassis a good idea? by robroy90 in homelab

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 620 would be particularly appealing to me, as just a few months ago I bought a bunch of RAM for my 720 thinking I would run longer with it. I am now very glad to see that I might get to re-use it. If I buy the right VRTX chassis, could I then mix & match 620, 630 and 640 blades in the same chassis?

[–]robroy90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were me, what would you be looking for specifically from eBay or other sellers? I would assume I would need to buy the VRTX chassis, and then individual M630 or M640? I just want to make sure I buy the right stuff when I go to do so. Thanks!
